I’ve been a paramedic for, well awhile, and every single time I’ve come on scene an someone is rendering aid, they are either doing it wrong or have missed some pretty serious stuff. So I think the single best thing you can bring to an active shooter, mass causality situation is a clear calm brain and solid focused training. My thought and approach is my EDC forearm, a very sharp knife, and a tourniquet. I’m my vehicle I have a pretty serious amount of tourniquets and quick clot, pressure dressings and chest seals. That is all you need.

Absolutely agree. Every code we've run the on-scene CPR was useless. People don't want to 'hurt' their loved ones, but CPR the right way is simply violent. Agreed on the EDC as well. The fantasy of carrying a fully loaded medic bag is cool, but ultimately unrealistic.

I'm a retired Paramedic i retired 20 years ago. Back then we made our own tourniquet and sucking chest dressing. I now have several med kits, one super large military type, and several smaller ones, with tons of tourniquets and chest dressings, blood clot, and everything else I can carry. I carry in every vehicle. I miss my active duty time, but I still help when I can.

all the supplies in the world mean nothing if you do not know how to use supplies. when poop hits the oscillating blades there is no time to read directions... I enjoy watching who have all kinds of stuff, but I bet they have no clue how to used it. I love the people running around with chest decompression needles... Remember despite what key board commandos think.....we all default to our level of training.. Either you are part of the solution or you are part of the problem...

Great video, as always! Lvl 1: If I’m stepping foot out of my house I have my pistol (M&P9 2.0 Compact or Shield Plus depending on the context), spare mag, knife, wallet, phone, and light on my person. Lvl 2: I always have my bag in my truck or office or close to wherever I am. In it I always have another pistol (full size M&P9 2.0), 2 spare 17rd mags, trauma kit, multi tool, knife, light, headlamp, gloves, charging cables and spare batteries, notepad and pen, cash, water purification kit, fire staring kit, and spare water bottle.

I’m an EMT and a firefighter and I keep a smaller EMS bag (airways but no oxygen), breaching tools (axe, pry bar, 24” bolt cutters, machete with saw) and common tools along with rope my truck. I made my kit focused on medical and rescue along with my edc Glock 43x. In a self defense situation you only have seconds to react but with medical and fire rescue you may have 30 seconds or a minute to run to your truck and grab the necessary tools. I only keep supplies in my med kit that is within my scope of practice and training. Some med kits have decompression needles but remember that chest decompression is at the paramedic level in some states so you don’t want to be liable for something outside of your scope of practice. Applying a chest seal would be more effective if you are a bystander to prevent pneumothorax that would later need decompression if left untreated. The WPS med kit in this video looks perfect for bystanders because you want to focus on sucking chest wounds and bleeding control then keep an open airway.

I am just getting my feet wet in medical, but I am prepared in case something happens. My thought is at least I'll have tools to try and save a life instead of standing there watching.

Bag should contain Gun/Ammo, good light, med kit, dry food, water, 2 way radio (know your local frequencies), multi-tool. That's literally it. Would pretty much cover over 95% of normal scenarios in urban or rural areas.

I can’t tell you how good your on the x advice for law enforcement/ civilian encounters is. I’ve had several moments in my career where I’m dialed up to 100 trying to solve a bad problem as fast as I can. Often times the call on the radio isnt specific. It’s shots fired…person shot…disturbance with a weapon etc. The faster you can identify yourself as a “non combatant” “non threat” the better off you are.

Another good idea for responding to active killer is a pair of air pods so you can throw them in dial 911 and have hands off communication with a dispatcher and give more info on the situation so it will be less likely for you to get taken out by responding officers

I’m leaning this same direction to make sure your interaction with police is the most favorable. The idea of a concealed carry badge is probably not the best idea due to the fact that you could be conceived as trying to impersonate an officer. Plus, the bad guy could try the same thing so first responders could be trained to expect that.

Level 1. It's what will matter 95% of the time, it's the one worth putting the most effort/focus in. For all other situations, I'd say Bug-in is more viable.

I find myself when out of the house, thinking "What will I do if something goes down here?" I used to train Corrections officers to play the "What if game." Since I started carrying more, I think it should be everyone's mind set in this insane world. Also, med kit in the vehicle is a must

You could cut a couple pieces of galvanized pipe at 18" to double the leverage on your bolt cutters without adding too much weight or taking up too much space. Add a thumb set screw even so they don't slip off.

Especially if the mag in the gun is not oem... Someone so skilled should be adequately equipped. In many cases people buy gear to compensate for a lack of skill. And in other cases skill negates the need to carry the kitchen sink but there is a sweet spot where the right guy needs the right tool to do the job right.

​@@Buletspunge555 often if you have to strip a mag there will be a round improperly seated in the mag blocking reinsertion. Rip the mag, reload new mag. Much simpler in an emergency situation where admin isn't possible. Saving a few extra rounds might not be worth keeping the gun out of action for longer. It all depends on the situation.

@@ImperiumLibertas 😆. I was playing devil's advocate because we show our students both methods. Not everyone carries an extra mag. It's important to be able to identify and rectify a stopage while reusing your magazine if that's the only magazine you have. It's not difficult to learn, it's just that most people don't bother because they prefer to chuck it and grab a backup instead. It's contextual.

an arm band, sash or “traffic” vest that says SECURITY folds up pretty small, weighs nothing and will give responders just a second pause to help you survive if you happen to be a civilian responder. Thanks for all the ideas and advice. Keep it up.

@@Ovokor As a retired cop, I'd say that if you're holding a gun in an active shooter situation the odds are high that you'll be targeted. Hopefully, they'd try to make sure you weren't plainclothes, but like John said, battlefields are chaos.

I carry my Red Cross vest just in case for something like this. I used to work for Red Cross for disaster management and they issued us these awesome hot weather "tactical" type vests they were testing out to replace their current stock. It's got the reflective strips on it, bunch of pockets, and it cinches tight with molle straps.

I always wear my local Fire Department hat I got from my late Uncle when I'm out and about. He was the former fire chief for the town I live in. I always figured/hoped if I ever get in an active shooter situation it might buy me that couple of seconds of hesitation from any responding good guys,mainly police, and I can go from there. That being said I've always wondered if they would even be able to read my hat from 20-30 yards, or would they just see a man with a gun and open fire. The print is fairly large, but sometimes I just don't know. Better than nothing I suppose. ┐( ˘_˘)┌

I like the bolt cutters idea. I actually started carrying an axe and sledge along with a pry bar in my truck about a year ago incase there was a need to rescue someone through a different route. Mainly I was thinking about car accidents or fires but usually just comes in handy for standard projects. Been rocking a glock 26, spare mag, fixed blade and a seperate flashlight for a few years and works well with my daily work at a custom auto shop. I work and live in the city so I always keep my bag close by. The bag holds medical, extra mags and ammo as well as some snacks and medicine. Got a little radio programmed with the local frequencies that are relevant in case cell phones were lost, damaged or not functioning. Also rock a maverick 88 in the truck with a selection of different ammo. Probably over the top but works for me. I find what I use the most is the extra vehicle fluids and tools I carry. I've been involved in and witnessed some terrible car crashes and if I'm able to be of service to someone in that time of need like others were for me then it makes carrying all this extra stuff worth it. I'm with Paul on the "you'll fight with what you have" mentality. If you happen to be in your vehicle when things kick off, you can have more options, but going back to it to retrieve kit is just slowing you down and allowing more time for the BG to continue unimpeded. But I also take Josh's approach to having more than enough firepower if time allows, and armor. I carry a small sling bag that is large enough to hold a 10x12 flat armor plate and a 7" 300BO pistol broken down with a DOLOS kit and Law Tactical folder. It can be deployed and ready in less than 20 seconds, the sling bag worn on the front, and I have 20-30 rnds ready and armor coving front vitals. Blood stopping medical is in the bag as well. I don't always have this bag, but it's unobtrusive enough that I will carry it with me if I'm in a busy and populated area that would be a prime target for a coward to harm innocent people. If on the X, my EDC will be the fastest option, always paired with an extra mag. Magazine failures are the #1 cause of gun malfunctions. It's not about having more rounds. If off the X but hear gunfire, the situation will dictate whether the AR comes out, or the handgun remains the best option. Either way, armor moves to the side of the body facing the gunfire.

I’m with Paul on this one. The likely hood of having all these packs and different sets of gear while in a public setting is extremely low. Walking around the mall, or going into a school, or other public outing with a backpack or other gear is just unreasonable and I doubt anyone, no matter how hardcore, does this 100% of the time. I think Pauls idea is way more realistic. Just be a regular everyday kinda dude who is ready to defend life. That simple. The other stuff with work itself out.

I'm not, not hard to carry a bit more on body and there's far too many reasons to keep at least extra medical in your vehicle. People like to think all tactical and whatever, but the odds of being on scene at a car accident are FAR FAR more likely.

@@snek9353 yeah, definitely keep a trauma kit in the car. Thought i was gonna have to use mine last year at the scene of a crash, but LE pulled in right behind me. One driver was knocked unconscious and had nose bleeding all over the airbag. I saw the blood from the road. She was conscious a couple seconds after I pulled in.

Like a lot of people, I carry a certain amount of EDC, and keep more stuff in the vehicle. When I have my “regular Carrie“ backpack, I keep a little bit more in there, spare mags, medical, etc. the biggest change for me though has been over the past couple of years. I had a back surgery that went sideways, so I had to change literally everything about what I carried on a regular basis. From the size of the handgun, the caliber (e.g., weight), the size of the bag that I normally carried as a briefcase when I was working, even things like having to change the size of my day planner. It also changed things like what I carried as my get home gear. Simply put, I could no longer plan on being able to hike to the mountains all the way home again like I used to, nor can I carry the weight that I could before. And then about a month ago, my back blew out and I had to have a two level fusion. I’m recovering pretty well, but there’s some damage to my nerves that who knows how well will resolve. So, I’m having to reformulate everything again. I’ve often wished that some of the trainers on some of the KZbin channels would have a whole series of classes on preparedness and EDC, training, etc. with health issues in mind.

That would be useful for many of us. None of us are what we were twenty years ago. I have adapted my kits to be smaller and more effective, but I have also looked at staging gear in key locations. It also helps if you have younger ones who you mentor--they can carry the gear.

The breaching tool is an interesting addition. Never thought of that one. I like the modified laptop bag. You don't have to go buy an expensive, specially created bag if you have a reliable solution that may just need some modifications. And it's also inconspicuous.

I feel as though most of the videos I've seen on this subject have similar options, but never discuss quanity and proximity meaningfully. I appreciate the scope of options presented as well as the philosophy behind each. It helps me feel more confident in my process. Specifically being light 'on the X' with 'stop the bleed' medical in reasonable proximity. Having a sounding board for your setup is a luxury we are not all afforded. WPS is a decent substitute.

Breach pen is good but remember it burns at 5000 degrees for x amount of time based on size. So you also need their extinguisher and I would want an ammo can type object to contain it after use for everyone else’s safety. Thats a lot of extra load out as a singleton

I've had the Commuter for a couple years now, but use it slightly differently. With a IIIA soft armor in the armor pouch, and a velcro pistol/4 mag holster in it, it is the perfect bag for airport carryon when traveling with firearms. Once at the destination, it serves as a great carry and defense rig, with plenty of space for emergency change of clothes, smaller electronics (laptop/tablet), small tools in the top compartment, and some medical supplies (I have not yet added this to my kit).

Would love to hear about Josh’s “multiple scenarios where he has pulled his CCW”. Are these as a contractor or working security, or just regular every day life? It seems hard to believe that anyone in the US is needing to pull CCW on a regular basis.

Depends where you are. Rural areas is unlikely, but in some urban areas I wouldn’t be surprised, especially with the decline we see in many cities.

I get it the urban areas are way more volatile in general, but I guess I’m coming from the perspective that if I ever pull my concealed weapon, it is to shoot somebody. Not to be a deterrent to some act that may or may not happen. That’s why I’m kind of curious. I’m wondering if my perspective is different than Josh is on what constitutes having a gun in your hand, or if he’s literally been in active shooter situation‘s. If the latter is the case I find that highly unique and unusual for our culture. That is for one person to be in multiple of those types of events. I’m not saying it’s right wrong, good or bad, I’m just pulling from my own 45 years of experience and recognizing that I’ve never been in the situation where a gun has been wrongfully used, or needed to defuse a situation. I still carry every day, just in case , but just curious

@@brianmills4891 Well said. And yeah every situation is different. If you get surrounded by 3 guys who aren’t armed but are acting aggressive towards you, do you not draw because there is no imminent threat? Or do you draw because you believe they want to harm you? Many schools of thought, as well as laws that come into play. But in situations like the one I just gave, criminals aren’t likely to call the police and report you for brandishing a firearm. Regardless, yes it’s very uncommon to have to draw your gun, let alone multiple times. If my area where I lived was bad enough to where I’ve felt I had to draw a gun multiple times, I wouldn’t live there! Let alone let anyone I love live there!

Breachpen. Much lighter than and can cut through more than bolt cutters. Real life scenario, it is doubtful you will need to cut through more than two doors. Hence, I carry 3. Much lighter than bolt cutters too. Breachpen runs out, drop and go. With bolt cutters you have to re-stow then go with each use. Love everything else. Ready for that triple ifak to hit the store! I laughed my ass off when I watched that demo video. Trying to make that whole process sound easier and more convenient than bolt cutters. It's cool, for sure, but you need eye pro, gloves, extra thermite matches, dry-ish striker, a small fire extinguisher, the thing burns for 25 seconds and it took the guy 23 seconds to burn through a chain. There was no margin for error and he wouldn't have got through it if it took 1 more second. It was also really weird that the guy had only used 5 of them before and didn't work for the company or make any money from any sales? I dunno, overall, I gotta say even if I had a couple of those I would want bolt cutters. And honestly the weight of bolt cutters can't be much more than 3 breachpens and you can use them for many many excursions, plus they don't burn at 5000 degrees

Breach pens and bolt cutters are cool and all, but I'd say practicing a few dozen hours with a lock picking multitool, having an etool, and a small metal saw will get through or under most priority obstacles. Metal saw blades interchangeable with wood saw blades need only one frame to bring, the blade itself is unnoticeably light while able to get through most any metal softer than high carbon steel. A good sturdy etool can also make as a good hatchet or pry bar for forced entry on wood doors as well as going under fencing, and can be useful in leveraging metal doors when picking. Lock picking seems like magic at first, but after a while everything literally starts clicking; especially with common locks that are used for nearly everything. After a few days of tinkering with my house locks I lost all hope in their security. I can get into most places people don't want me to be in PS. To each their own, I don't personally like the one time use of many uncommon fuel based items, but if you have specific personal missions that need to be done in a shtf that would be made 80% easier, I'd say bring em. Bolt cutters are also mission specific imo. If they're carried without purpose for more than a couple days on an excursion one may as well be carrying 10-15lbs of bricks instead

I normally carry an extra mag not because I think I’ll get into a running gun battle but more because I feel mags can be a failure point on guns that is easy to fix unless you don’t have another.

Would definitely recommend looking into the new Olaes Hemostatic bandages from TacMed. You have a pressure bandage combined with hemostatic gauze. Great for space saving.

It would be like taking an Israeli and attaching a quikclot combat gauze to it. Though with the amount of people on blood thinners, at least in the US, I have had better experience with chitosan based hemostats like Celox or Hemcon. Don't have to worry about the body's natural clotting cascade then.

@@Aphabet21 The whole Quikclot line is Kaolin based which helps accelerate the bodies clotting cascade. Studies are basically the same between them to be honest. Personally, just prefer products that are Chitosan based like Celox. Dealt with patients in shock and early stages of hypothermia where the body struggles to clot effectively.

All I want to say to Paul for consideration is that having to use a defensive gun is already a statistically improbable event. The average round count typically touted of 2-3 for self-defense actually includes 0 shots fired (about 76% of DGUs) which pulls that average down quite a bit. He may want to consider start carrying a second mag with that in mind, but everyone does what works for them! Thanks for the video. Impersonating an officer at that point would be the least of everyone's worries if an active shooter is put down by you or your staged in an area where you have them pinned down and waiting on backup.

I agree with the 100% as well as the concerns of the first response above. That said, perhaps in addition to having the bright vest, maybe having a large RED CROSS sewn on the back and halves on the front to make the international First Aid emblem visible would give responding LEO pause to at least question you or think about shooting first THEN asking questions when encountering you. But as Mr. Big pointed out, when 1st Responders do enter the fray, go CCW again and make DAMNED SURE you have cover if the Bad Guy isn't down and out so he can't shoot YOU in the meantime. Great points all, though, and I try to make it a point to always have SOME KIND of IFAK with me when I'm out of the house. To me it's just a good practice these days. I would say a throw on sticker would be better tbh, high vis vests could be bad for you in that situation but disposable “responder” stickers on your chest and back would do the job. As long as you stand down when police arrive im sure youd be alright.

After taking Med 1+2 with Doc T., I started carrying medical in my purse👜, backpack🎒, and car 🚗 (tourniquets, compression bandages, gauze, chest seals, NPAs, trauma shears, and SAM splints). Each one increasing in quantity of items, except the SAM splints which only increase in length, from purse to car. My purse has a center compartment where I store a clear zip pouch with all the med supplies. I use my glovebox and center console to store the medical in my car. Thank the Lord, I haven't needed to use any of them, but I feel prepared if the need arises ⛑️

I would totally forgo the flex cuffs or ANY kind of bondage items! If you’re ever stopped and searched for whatever reason, a bag with weapons, duct tape and cuffs can be EXTREMELY suspicious! Many rapists and serial killers have carried “rape kit” bags. You could be held and heavily investigated. Especially if there happens to be unsolved rapes in the area!

I know they are thicker guns but I live in south Florida and wear shorts and tee shirt without attracting attention to my self.

True, but they may not be as reliable. In some cases they are. I did not have good luck with them. They made my gun cycle badly with extreme force on a full mag (drastically increased the force required for the slide) and switching the mag release resulted in being unable to use the standard mags. If you put a regular mag in there, it would get jammed and require significant force to pull out. Not worth it for me. For my carry pistol, I would rather have the reliability of a Glock if I am carrying a Glock.

@@wyatterdman8742 In my discussions with the Shield Arms staff, they said that some guns have different tolerances, and it can occur. For the most part, they don’t have issues, but they can exist. And it was with multiple mags of theirs. I know several people who say they have no issue with them. But I have. And many others have. If they work great for you and you verify that with a few thousand rounds, then great. But for me, when it makes a slide hard to rack and the cycling isn’t as reliable, I am not trying to put a thousand rounds through it to just break it in. Stock, the Glock ate any ammo without a hiccup. With the S15, it wasn’t as reliable. And that’s a no-go for me. I would rather carry a 7 shot G43 with a spare mag than a less reliable 16 rounder. Edit: and there was NO WAY to use a stock mag with their metal mag. It just jammed the gun. Their mags fed and released perfectly, but stock would jam to the point you had to strip it out every time.

One random thought, which is in no way intended to disparage the people in this video: If you find yourself in a number of situations where you've had to draw your CC in the United States, you're hanging out in the wrong places. And no, I'm not joking. I carried weapons professionally for a career in an urban area. So far, when I was not at work, I've only had to pull my cc once. If you make the comment that you've had to pull your CC "Several times" something is definitely wrong. If you're a contractor overseas, that's entirely different. I get it. But if you're pulling a CC in the US on a regular basis, you either live in the wrong place, hang out with the wrong people, or you're actively looking for trouble.

Possibly. Or which is more likely for this gentleman, he travels frequently and the entire highway system is one large transitional space and criminals patrol it for prey. Also, more and more the bad actors are headed to the low crime areas on the good side of the tracks so to speak, as people have more stuff to steal and have let their guard down. I live in a very nice area and in the past two years we have had 4 incidents where perps were doing criminal shit in our neighborhood, which is a dead end loop for vehicles and just barely better on foot, and the sheriffs had to respond with road block in front of my house near the entrance paired with dogs, horseback and helicopters to track the scum as they attempt to flee through the river bed and creek system. It hasn’t ended well for any of the perps. Best part is myself and the neighbors all come out and the sheriff knows who is who and asks us to pitch in, so we all take up a post and keep watch.

I’ve had to draw my CC in a defensive manner three times and thank God never had to fire it. Not a single time was I internet til ally putting myself in the situation. Remember, bad guys get to be ambush predators, and all we can do is respond. If someone is pounding on your door at 3am covering your peephole asking to be let in to use your phone meanwhile you can see there are two more people outside on each side of the door… you aren’t grabbing your gun? Or two guys try to climb into your car at a red light but your doors are locked, so you pull your gun and evasively drive off, that sound like looking for a fight? Or how about if you’re walking your wife and daughter out to the car after a movie and you notice a car has parked very close to the passenger side, at an angle, isn’t fully in the space so the doors line up for a snatch and grab, and is running but the lights are off? Keep in mind these all happened in one of the lowest crime counties in the country; an affluent area. I also owned my own business for a while in a different city with worse crime rates but the business was in an affluent area and had to make cash deposits regularly and despite banking in the best oft of town, still had some thugs from Fresno come to the adjacent city of clovis trying to jack people. Don’t think for a second that the criminals don’t know where the money is; that’s naive. Also don’t think that having to draw your weapon has anything to do with looking for trouble, that’s a dangerous assumption that may make you hesitate accessing your weapon and by then it’s too late. But hey, maybe you have some crystal ball, a magic mirror, a castle, a moat, a garrison and you never leave your house… but even the tallest walls signal to the bad guys that something worth taking is behind them. Hopefully you never have to come across the scum I have.

In my experience, people who carry tend to find themselves in situations where they need that weapon. It's not a coincidence. And btw, I know Tulare County very well. My entire family is from there. We all left decades ago. Why? Not a safe place to live. Even places that used to be sleepy little towns, like Ivanhoe and Dinuba, Sultana, are now crime-ridden.

@@mattphillips1910 I lived in Clovis for 20 years and clovis PD used to set up on the main roads from Fresno to clovis and profile/screen many of the vehicles coming across the line and roll them. These days, even northeast Fresno all the way out to copper river country club is grounds to watch your back. Plenty of thugs coming to the good parts of town and into clovis. I’m out on the coast now and even out here there have been some close calls.

My biggest difference from John is I run a leatherback 3A lvl backpack with my response gear inside so I'm less likely to end up dead. Though I try to keep the overall profile of it down so I can store it under my car seat. Aside from that I prefer the notion of I'd rather not need it than not have it and need it. Great video guys and I think I'll be ordering one of those triple kits after my move for a larger option than the two kits I usually carry.

I get the moral response, but in most of these cases, Paul is pretty much how all of us are on any given day. If there was an active shooter going on, running back to your car to grab a rifle, or bag, or whatever I could see as questionable. We carry to protect our lives and the lives of others, but other than that, to hunt down an active shooter could be incredibly dangerous in how fast we move, time changes to us under stress. What could feel like seconds could be a minute and vise versa and in that time, cops could arrive as you’re still looking for the guy and now you become the guy to the cops. I’m not saying that carrying a rifle is so much of a bad thing, but having it stowed away as an active shooter backup might be a bit in the extreme. Also, hunting a shooter down might be on the extreme. Again, morally, yes, questionable? Yeah. Carrying a little bit of medical is cool, but to leave a location and to return is weird, and to end a shooting and then leave and return could be a big red flag. So I don’t know. Level two and three seem a bit much. This might just be the military in these guys, but I don’t know of many accounts where people hunt down shooters and medical is supplied much before cops and medical arrive on the scene.

Here in New Mexico we are very rural (20 miles from village of 2000) and our County Sheriff has notified us that we should be prepared to protect ourselves because typically, outside of the two larger villages, the response time is 45 minutes minimum and since its a large county with only 25 officers, more likely over 45 minutes.

I have a full out first aid kit in a pelican case in my car. Its complete with 2 Walmart basic 2 way radios in pelican with a tiny am/fm radio, tourniquet, quick clot and chest seals. Aside from that I mainly go with an Olight Warrior Mini and a Kershaw pocket knife.
