I think that Nintendo has conclusively proven with 100 million plus sales of the Switch that there is a large market for dedicated gaming devices so long as it offers a superior gaming experience to smartphones with an exclusive library of games.

Hearing about the Vita always gets me worked up. It had so much potential and was made over-complicated for what we wanted out of a modern PSP. I got to enjoy Gravity Rush on mine, but the most played game I had was Jetpack Joyride; you just can't beat being able to use physical buttons!

would've also had been nice if they gave it some form of stacked shoulder buttons in some way and get rid of the back touchpad. I think that was an expensive gimmick for them at the time. If they did that plus gotten rid of the 3G and just left it as a wifi model, it would've sold better I'm sure. Plus focused more on the games, I think it made it costly to develop for, not sure, so a lot of the devs just went to nintendo instead. They kind've half gave up a lot of the time on not pushing more games and as the switch shows, having a robust library really can sell a platform, not just the device itself. I personally never undock my switch simply because it is too bulky to take around and I would've passed on it if it didn't have the games it did.

I dare to disagree. Vita was stuffed with features that were not adding much, other than cost - rear touch screen, gyro, he'll even front touch screen - making it needlessly expensive. Compare that to f.ex 2DS - cheap brick that is designed to be lugged around in school backpacks and is very durable. Which one will you buy for your kid? It's not going to be the overpriced gimmicky one. Don't get me wrong I do love the vita too, I honestly do. But it was over engineered, overpriced and that steep entry barrier for devs and consumers sentenced it to the death spiral named - lack of content (thus lack of users, thus lack of devs, thus lack of content, etc) Sadly Sony didn't learn from that mistake - they still keep putting gimmicky TouchPads on their gamepads, and the rear paddles for ps4 gamepad with oled? Really? Oled? That's just wasteful :( Nintendo learned from WiiU, Sony from Vita didn't :(

@@renlam2905 first of all I don't think about what I'm going to be for my kid when it comes to PLAYSTATION HANDHELDS so that nonsense is out of the way, the Psvita wasn't over engineered at all, devs just never got to use it to its full potential because sales didn't take off like expected, the gyroscopic sensors and Back touch screen would've been used more if the sales were there. Sony learned alot more from the failures of the ps3 for the ps4, Sony learned way more, yes rear ps4 trigger uses OLED because OLED is cheaper to manufacture so that made sense, Sony hasn't made a new handheld since the VITA so you can't go assuming they haven't learned because they haven't shown a handheld yet.

I still remember being so shocked hearing the vita FAILED. I had one of these and it was the best thing I’ve ever had. During the time I had this my mom was in the hospital for breast cancer treatments so I would spend a lot of time there. I had Amazing Spider-Man, Sly Cooper Thieves in Time and Minecraft loaded on my Vita and I would constantly play it and to me, an 8 year old who didn’t have a phone at the time, the Vita was the greatest thing ever in existence and I still can’t believe it actually failed because it really is one of the greatest handhelds of all time.

Well not everyone likes mobile gaming, but in Asian countries it's a hot cake market. No wonder they have dedicated gaming smartphone like ROG Phones, Black Shark phones, Razer Phones and Red Magic phones. I myself more on the handheld user (owned both modded PS Vita Slim 256GB and New Nintendo 3DS XL 64GB), but since "Western" Sony "HATES" handhelds and Nintendo being Idiotendo I went in for ROG Phone 3 as both my daily drive/mobile gaming and emulation with bluetooth controller. As much as you dislike mobile gaming, the future is already implemented thanks to game companies focusing on the mobile platform market than console/PC platform.

​@Dr. Peach Guy Well to start off, a ton of the games on the switch run horrible. I've refunded plenty of games simply because a decent framerate can't be met. Don't know why they would allow any of those games but it feels like they're just farming titles at this point. And yea, Mario Odyssey and BOTW were amazing games but that's literally where all my hours went. Smash is boring and the community is horrible. I can play Monster Hunter on my PC with better frames, graphics, display, etc. you know the deal. Animal Crossing ran out of content after a month. The new Mario Party is fun with my friends, but ultimately that's just a recycled game. Literally the only game I look forward to playing on the switch is Metroid and Splatoon 3. No other game is worth it. Now, I'm hoping you saw the video. The Vita can emulate thousands of games! Even Nintendo doesn't have all their classics on the switch... Not to mention how expensive the switch, their games, and accessories are. $350 their new OLED model? It's literally a handheld costing as much as the current generation consoles and it's hardly an upgrade from the original. Full price for most of their games even though they came out ages ago? I might as well start a mortgage for this. Seriously, a simple cover for $40? I'll pass. Personally, I expected greater things from the switch considering its predecessor was the great DS, yet you brag about it as if it was revolutionary. And still everyone I know has let it collect dust on its screen scratching dock.

Loving the attention the Vita community is getting and I'm glad to be a part of what's keeping it alive! However I'd just want to touch on a few things mentioned in the video: 1. You mentioned that the Vita could run PS2 games which sadly doesn't look to be happening anytime soon. There's testing going on with ELF files and hope hasn't been abandoned, but for now PS2 games can't be emulated on the Vita due to hardware restrictions. 2. Whilst the San Andreas android port runs pretty well thanks to updates from the development team, Bully is still having notable issues and doesn't run perfectly. It's a great game and the port is fantastic, but there is known issues with the textures that cause the game to crash at times. Luckily there's an auto-save feature but it's best to be aware of the chance of crashes before jumping into the game. Hopefully soon there will be some tweaks and updates to the port! 3. I'd strongly advise anyone looking to buy a Vita to purchase a clean device with no hacking/modding done to it. Like Frank said it means you can learn the system yourself and make the necessary changes without relying on another person to put everything in the right order (this also helps you know where to look in the future if you want to make any adjustments or updates). It's a really easy process after doing a bit of research and finding out exactly what you need to do it. Doing the modding yourself also means you don't have to worry about the chance of a third party adding any malicious files/software. It's highly unlikely but that's what made me want to do my own modifications. That being said, it's a great time to get into the Vita and see all the possibilities it has. There's constant updates to controller support, the game library is increasing and the community really won't let this console die. Even though Sony abandoned the console many years ago it's the community and the support from developers that keep the Vita alive as it rightly deserves.

Agree'd - specifically point (3). I've modded consoles in the past, but I just modded my Vita for the first time yesterday and it really does help just doing it yourself. You learn the file architecture, how to transfer stuff, what the plugins do and how to navigate their menus and so on. Although i found it pretty straight forward (obviously thanks to the good videos I watched lol) but I did think ''imagine someone buys one of these pre-modded and havent seen any videos on how to use it''. Some would be lost for sure. So yeah, I agree, if your gonna do it, pick a vita up cheap and do some research and do the mods yourself.

I've softmodded my PS Vita, and it has certainly opened a lot of doors of potential and possibility for me. The fact that I can now dock the console to a TV, and play it with a Dual Shock 4 controller, speaks volumes towards turning it into a Sony branded Switch.

I have had people super impressed by the Vita randomly in public. I had someone on a year ago watch me playing Call of Duty Black Ops. They were really surprised by the graphics and controls. I let them play it and they loved it. I also had my PSP with me (lol) and pulled that out and he said he sorta remembered it existing. Once he learned about all of the mod stuff for the vita and being able to play stuff like GTA and MGS on it he ordered one on the spot on the plane. I have had random people ask me what it is and it's funny when people say "Sony made a gameboy?" haha. The PSP was a huge success in comparison and had a ton of amazing titles. The Vita feels so good in the hand and the dual joysticks make FPS games and such easy to play. Well anyways....I'm going to finish up this level on Medal of Honor Heroes 2 on my PSP. I'm trying to 100% every campaign on the hardest setting and it's incredibly challenging. Especially using the square, circle, x, triangle buttons in place of a second joystick.

Like I remember playing Uncharted Golden Abyss and there was a. Puzzle that you actually had to have light shine on the back of the vita to solve the puzzle. The main selling point was the ability to stream whilst playing from the front camera. No other gaming device has even touched this yet. All youtubers, all twitch streamers use some capture device. So simple to pewdiepie stream whilst actially playing in realtime. Vita was literally decades ahead of the game.

Right now the cheapest way to get into it is probably just buying an unmodified japanese vita. I picked the OLED one up in March for $120.

@@carsonbrooks1326 if you mod the vita you can use SD2VITA and get up to 500Gb’s with MicroSd’s. It’s definitely worth it to mod it. I got mine last November and with the amount of games you can get from different generations I don’t see myself setting it down for a long timeee.

6:16 One of my favorite handheld to console times was with SOCOM: Combined Assault 2 on PS2, and it's counterpart on the PSP. For example, on the PSP counterpart you can blow up an enemy's supply truck, and if you sync the PSP game through USB to the PS2 game, that same supply truck wouldn't appear in the PS2 game. *sigh* This was back in the day when SOCOM was still a good series until it went downhill with the online-only Confrontation on PS3. Oh, and we don't talk much about the SOCOM game on PS4 either lol

Had a Vita for a good while. Dug it out of the closet a few years ago, modded it, played metal gear solid repeatedly for about a month, buried it back in the closet. It's great, but for me, it's novelty wears off extremely fast. It's always nice to come back to every once in a while.

I really loved the vita , i think i have the 2 . I have two SD card full off games . I remember spending hours playing uncharted, silent hill, FinalFantasy 7 and Kill Zone on the go . Have a few physical games for it too. One thing i remember is that my saves use to get corrupted and I use to have to start the games all over, I think this was the reason i got fed up and put it away. Still have it tucked away in a drawer.

Vitas failure was a result of three things: 1: Overload of hardware features driving up the price. 3G, AMOLED display, rear touchpad and proprietary memory card format may have looked neat, but was completely unnecessary for a device meant as a mass-market device. 2: Sonys refusal to support the device for more than a few years meant the supply of good games dried up very fast. Every single one of the best-rated PS Vita games were released during the first two years after the consoles release, this says a lot. 3: The insane development of mobile chips during those years. We in a few short years in the smartphone space went from 128 MB of RAM and single-core processors to 4 GB or more of RAM and quad or even octa core processors. And while the Vita was powerful for its time, Sony did not have access to a time-machine. Had the Vita been released only 2-3 years later with a Tegra 4 or similar chip I'm sure it would have had much better longevity.

I cannot disagree. The cost of those memory cards really hampered the system and while the few exclusives to the Vita were mostly good, they didn't make enough of them to compete with the 3DS. I really did play a lot of console quality games well on the go though.

Nope won't happen, at least not at launch. PS3 and Switch emulation are still fairly limited. I have a gaming pc with a 3060 Ti and a Ryzen 7 3700X and even i have lag an crashes while playing ps3 and switch games on it. The Deck will be about two to three times as powerful as the switch, not to mention that it's runs a completely different architecture then the switch (x86 instead of arm). There is no way this thing could run switch games in a state you want to play them

Whats crazy is the Vita wasnt a market failure, Sony just decided to quit supporting the device in the west to focus on the PS4 insead of wrapping it into the larger picture. I still use my vita to remote play my ps4 from outside the house on my hotspot. They really should have shifted the Vita marketing to make it THE accessory for the PS4, which would have did well for their pockets overall. In Japan it was fighting the Nintendo DS decently well from what I heard.

I got a Vita recently. I got it for $75. It came with an 8gb official memory card and an SD2VITA. It had some flaws, such as someone having PAINTED the back of it, there were some scuffs so it's not mint on the front either, and the back touch didn't work. I fixed the back touch and bought a cover for it. It works perfectly fine. Though originally the CFW someone put on it was borked, so I had to redo cfw myself, but now it's great. Starting off, I was disappointed. A huge thing I always hear is how good the Vita is for emulation. And it's not. It's okay for emulation. RetroArch is the best way I've found to play games at full speed, and even then it's not perfect. But it's okay, tolerable, but nowhere near as good as people make it out to be. Now though, I have about 40 (some being collections like God of War, Sly, and Ratchet) Vita games, 40 PSP games, and 40 PSX games on it, plus ports of GTA3, VC, and SA, emulation with a ton of roms, the Commander Keen games, and a bunch of plugins and apps like ReVita, EasyVPK, and Adrenaline Bubble Manager. Even a bunch of PSP Plugins. The Vita is actually super cool. Especially when you also have a modded 2DS with hundreds of games to accompany it. Between the two, I'm set. Also should be noted. Those unofficial "PS2 ports", like San Andreas and Bully, are ANDROID ports. They're ports of the android versions. That's why we have them. The Vita wouldn't be able to handle a full on PS2 game. Even the official PS2 ports are downgraded graphically to get them to work.
