@@rtara11 You can 'wake it up' from rest mode via remote play (there is a setting to enable that on the console). But it has to be fully on for the games to actually play and stream.

Best review I’ve seen yet. Well rounded and balanced. Would love to be able to have one but didn’t preorder as I didn’t think they’d be this popular & I missed out on the restock on Wednesday. It really seems like this device is almost perfect for your use case. You also have a great home wifi network and a phone that lets you access public wifi. Thanks for providing the network stats for all of the locations where you used it. Everyone's experience will vary based on that factor it would seem. Tbh I play on my portal just about as much as I play on my PS5 at least 40% of the time when you include at work and at home. These days I only use my PS5 for competitive games. Imo there's something addictive about playing on the portal

It's definitely a win as far as convenience goes. Some game play on it better than others, GT7 I find a bit fiddly with the smaller sticks compared to the full size dual sense ones. But D4 and Spider-Man 2 have been mega on it! Makes no difference whether I play on the TV or Portal when it comes to FPS, I am terrible on both 😅

@@TheGameFatherUK it’s funny, I’ve been playing a lot of gt7 on the portal and for me it’s been fine! I honestly don’t notice the stick size all that much. I did watch some videos on gta and someone mentioned when using a controller joystick to press forward continually then roll the stick left and right to turn, I can say that made a really big difference for me! Last time I played a GT game was on ps2 I think and I’m pretty sure I just used the dpad. Most games have felt really good, with the exception of destiny pvp and cyberpunk. While cyberpunk is passable, online multiplayer on such a small screen and even with a tiny amount of input delay can really be felt! But for $200 it’s been an awesome experience, it’s so nice to sit in the living room with my family and still play something in the background. Since my phone is an iPhone mini remote play was way too small on that screen, and my other option was my MacBook Air but that’s just way too many moving pieces and I rarely did it for that reason. Portal for me was a great purchase.

Good reivew having tested it in several scenarios. It's not a perfect device but it does what it sets out to do. My main gripes with it are the lack of standard Bluetooth support, no support for PS+ streaming and the lack of web browser to log into public WiFi.

Well, I agree with you on the bluetooth so I've been testing a 3.5mm bluetooth transmitter on the Portal as a way to add it yourself. Should have something uploaded about it tomorrow night :) As for the browser, I hope Sony have felt enough heat about it to add it in an update, it's really needed imo!

I think there is a misunderstanding in regards to the Networkspeedtests. Mbps (MegaBITS per sec) != MBps (MegaBYTES per sec) BYTES is a unit of data composed of eight binary digit (8 bits). So for example: the roughly 100 Mbits measure on the mountainside are actually 100/8 MBits which is roughly 12MBytes per second and not 100 MBytes per second as mentioned in the video.

With regards to public WiFi, change the mac address on your phone to match that of your Portal, go through TOS etc and your Portal should connect!! There actually is a browser on the Portal but it's currently locked to pre set adresses...

As a portal owner and someone who’s watched every portal video on YT, this is the truest depiction of what it’s like having the portal. Ive played 15 games of Madden online and haven’t had a single issue. I could barely make it through an online game when using remote play on my M1 iPad Pro. The Portal is already the greatest handheld ever made

Great Review, I love the Portal. I agree with the pushing an update to show the battery percentage instead of the bars, however I found a way to view the percentage. The Portal will need to be completely turned off and and connected to a charger, and when you press the power button once it will show the battery with the percentage.

I do not own PS Portal, but 75% of the time i will remote play from ipad. Had to carry around 2 device instead of only 1 is a Plus for me. Plus you cannot play comfortably on bed or couch when using ipad to remote play. I would love PS Portal but is not on sale in Malaysia 🇲🇾

This is something I fully agree with. I think the vast majority of people that are having issues within their home are due to poor WiFi coverage and/or bad configs. The app is a nice way of testing it before the expense and potential disappointment.

I’m having a blast with my PSP 2023 whether I’m at home, work, and dining at Panera for example. 😂 I initially couldn’t connect to one of two PS5s I have at home due to it being solely connected via wifi; however, I purchased a decent WiFi extender from Amazon during Cyber Monday and now it connects flawlessly anywhere at home. The wired PS5 connects instantly to my Portal, naturally.

I can't emphasize enough that the simplicity/convenience of the Portal is what elevates it above other devices I have that support remote play. As demonstrated in the video, you just wake the Portal + press the PS button and it connects to the PS5. That reason alone has me using this device way more than my other remote play capable devices. I'm actually playing my PS5 more than ever now. It's also a much more comfortable device than my other handhelds (Steam Deck, Switch, Retroid Pocket, etc.). I plan to only use the Portal on my home network. I have a mesh wifi system with four hubs around my home + workshop. I have a PS5 connected to one of the wifi hubs via ethernet. With this setup, I'm having a great experience playing anywhere in my home.

Solid review and appreciate all the remote testing. FWIW iOS also allows for tethering over WiFi so iPhone/iPad users can also share public connections and act as hotspots. I picked up mine last week and the best tip is to connect your PS5 to ethernet, it makes a huge difference in performance. Availability seems to be getting better. I live on Vancouver Island and our local Best Buy has had stock for a few weeks now.

Are you sure about the iOS WiFi sharing? I did a bunch of testing and each time I set the hotspot it disconnected the WiFi. I also couldn't seem to find much online about iOS being able to do it? Either way, I hope you're having a blast with the Portal!

Thank you, I stand corrected. It appears that even if you are on WiFi tethering on iOS will pull cellular data. I have a large data plan so it's never occurred to me. A little embarrassing as I own a tech company but we never stop learning I suppose. Again, thanks. @@TheGameFatherUK

I have one too and totally agree with this review! My biggest use-case is that I'm often away from home for a couple of weeks at a time and this is a perfect solution. I've been known to take my PS5 with me so this is a much more portable option.

Just bought my PS Portal and can't wait to try it on the road because when we use up your phones cellular data while out traveling in the car, we usually get behind any bus and connect to it's WiFi system - useful on those long freeway journeys LOL

I have been enjoying mine but a few things I would love to see added is while in the house a direct connection to the PS5 and not use the router plus enable cloud streaming directly to the Portal would be great (on top of the suggestions you made)

Agree with you on that, it would have been a nice addition, I think the cloud streaming will come in the next year or so. I tried adding bluetooth audio today, it's not been a great experience! I can kinda see why they didn't include it now.

I beat spiderman 2 two states away from home. Granted, my ps5 is wired to fiber Internet at home and the place I'm at has good wifi. I'm very impressed how well the portal performs in the right conditions. With a little one this is a game changer! Great review

Hey! Thanks for writing such a positive comment, I really appreciate it :D I don't personally have a Steam Deck but I can empathise with the dilemma. For me it would come down to ergonomics. I like the Dual Sense controller and the haptic feedback too. Not sure that warrants spending £200 when you can get the app for free on the Steam Deck though.

What a great review, I just got mine today. It's a shame you need a hotspot for some public networks. But that seemed like the worst of the cons. I think this is a great product for dads that need to play while the kids watch shows or when they can't watch you play gorey games.

This hurts me. I wanted to sing its praises and could see how amazing it would be to play Battlefield 5 on it. After trying it though, my network was not strong enough, and the lag dragged it down for me. My recommendation, before buying, would be to make sure you have a powerful internet connection.
