The PS5 Gaming Monitor Could Have Been Great

Reviewing the Sony Inzone M9 monitor. One of the only monitors under $900 that has full array local dimming. It would have been the perfect one monitor setup if it had a few more things that I feel Sony should have included.

the first thing comes to mind is a Sony monitor with the same aesthetic of their cameras (like the A7 or the one that you are using for your vids) and by that I mean monitor with thin bezels (Like Eve Spectrum) and different textures on the back. And with a cool minimal elegant stand

If you play fps games, this monitor is a beast to do so on. the 4k 96 zones of led and refresh rate make it very easy to notice opponents hiding out . Never base your purchase on what these hating youtubers have to say, the monitor is absolutely solid.... when the 32 inch version drops, I'll be buying it aswell

Question for the reviewer: given the fact that Eve Spectrum has a Quantum Dot layer (well, NanoCell, but it's the same thing really), and this Sony doesn't, have you felt at any moment that colors on this monitor were less rich and vibrant?

It's very "vibrant"... Most content on PC is mastered for sRGB and the monitor does not have an sRGB mode. Without manual calibration everything is oversaturated. But most PC users do not care about color spaces.

@@Chris-xe5ts Yes, I know it doesn't natively support sRGB clamp, although I'm hoping maybe they'll add support later on over a firmware update. However, I have an intention to buy the hardware calibrator, so it doesn't matter much in the end anyway. But I can't stop to wonder, would Quantum-dot layer make things look even better. The question is: if we have two monitors of the same size, one of them does have Quantum-dot layer and the other doesn't, given that they are both hardware-calibrated to sRGB colorspace with the same calibrator, would Quantum-dot monitor still somehow look a little bit better or not? Would colors look a little more "pure"? I really don't know, but I would like to know.

Purchased this monitor when it was released and am using it with my PS5 and M1 MacBook Pro. So far I’m loving it except for some parts of the HDR. I say some parts because when watching movies and gaming in HDR, I notice the local dimming (when set to high) causing the image to exhibit haloing that looks different from what I’ve seen in other Sony LED backlight displays. This only happens in a pitch black room with no bias lighting but it’s actually kinda distracting. To the point where I feel like turning local dimming to low is a better option with HDR content. I find it’s most noticeable with contrasty HDR movie scenes but when you know what to look for it’s noticeable with pretty much all HDR content. You get haloing in the form of squiggly white lines that move around frame depending where highlighted objects/subjects are in the frame. Not sure if it’s just my panel but given that the monitor has none of the screen defects people have been posting online about, I want to say I have a solid panel. Just wondering if anyone can add to this discussion. I love this monitor and if this is a normal backlight consequence on a 27 inch screen, I’m willing to put up with it. But if it’s a defect, then I feel like I should swap it out while the return window is still good. Thanks all 🤘🏼

If you’re looking for a good mini led or oled monitor, maybe consider some of LG’s newer options or maybe ASUS’ new releases too once they’re released to the public (LG’s options look a bit less ‘gamery’). Love the aesthetic of your setups btw!! :)

Hey great video! I'm interested in buying the Sony Inzone M9 to use with my Macbook Pro 14" and game with my PS5 (and Switch). Do you know if Mac OS "Night Shift" feature works with the Sony as a second monitor? Is it possible to get 144hz connected with Display Port? (My Caldigit Hub has DP, and then it connects through Thunderbolt 3 to my Macbook).

Night shift works. You can get 144hz over usbC to displayport but I don’t think you’ll get it through a dock it must be the only thing on the controller due to bandwidth though you can get 48-120hz variable I’m sure your way.

Finally a review that acknowledges Mac connectivity. I preordered mine last week with no clue if it would accept the full 4k 144hz over USB-C. Disappointed that its only 15 watt charging, but I'll manage. My only other option was the Gigabyte M28U, but that is edge lit and would make me puke after using OLED for the past 2 years.

Thunderbolt 3 cable or a usbc to hdmi. If you want to use the kvm use hdmi or DP. The usbc doesn’t allow kvm

I was hyped for this monitor… but after doing some reading and watching some initial hands on… seemed like there was a lot of “meh” for the price… HDR isn’t anything to write home about (better with it off) and the speakers are literally trash… for the price difference get the Gigabyte M28U or M32U (latter having much better ergonomics)… multi hundreds less and honestly better UI. Gigabytes have a simple ac cable whereas Sony has a MASSIVE power brick. I was so disappointed… I’m not going to bother with the LGs as they lack type C ports for the MacBook so I MIGHT try the new gloss “spectrum” eve 4K.

In Europe the Inzone M9 can cost the same as Odyssey Neo G8 which is a better monitor in almost every possible way. That makes the Sony monitor a terrible value for the money. The choice is obvious when you get 1196 vs 96 dimming zones and much higher brightness and way better contrast . The refresh rate of the Neo G8 is also 240hz instead of the 120hz refresh rate of the InZone M9. I don't have either of these monitors but I can tell from experience that the dimming zones will make a very huge and noticeable difference even to the untrained eye. I had the Acer Predator X35 monitor when it was new and it looked way better than other monitors on the market (512 dimming zones) Now I use Samsung Q950TS 8K QLED for my PS5 and Samsung Odyssey Neo G9 (2048 dimming zones) for my pc and it makes the gaming experience much better to have both deep blacks and the high brightness that displays with backlighting can provide. The only thing I feel like I am missing out on with pc monitors is the incredibly good anti reflective coating I have on the tv and that the panel itself looks inky black. My 65" tv with 336 dimming zones looked way better in terms of black levels and contrast than my 35" monitor with 512 zones in every scenario.

I’m not so crazy about the design but it is consistent with the PS5 aesthetic, so It makes sense in that context. Sony always puts a ton of thought and effort into their design, so even when I don’t like it that much, I can still see the little design details that only companies like Sony or apple care about. IMO those details are worth the price premium and I’ll take a design like this that I’m not that crazy about over the hideous “l33t gamer” design with unicorn vomit LEDs - that style is just hideous and most of the better monitors use it to some extent. So yeah even with a slightly weird exterior design it’s gonna be better than almost everything else out there, albeit for a premium price.
