They had the NTC-400 in the USMC,the same engine was also used in Military trucks like the M915-M920 & M915A1-M920A1 at that,before they phased them out by the 1990's and early 2000's.The same engine is very famous in multiple trucks out there with Peterbilts,Freightliners,Kenworths,etc.

Stephan does such an awesome job video taping and most important labeling, the Museum is lucky to have him. We could use another dozen just like him to keep the Museum running.

Love the early 80 tonners, with those monster Cummins LI600's! Thanks for sharing...

The GE 80T's that I have all seen from the USMC had the 14.0L NTC-400,haven't seen a LI600,never heard of that one before.The NTC-400 I'm thinking about is a popular engine among trucks,and Military trucks had them too,the M915-M920 & M915A1-M920A1 had the exact same engine before they retired them,the M812-M820 just like the M923-M943 and M923A1-M945A1 also had a 14.0L but it was a NHC-250 instead,only the engine block was the same displacement.

+RailsandRoads 1801 is the GP9 Santa Maria Valley operates, the same Railroad that ran the railbus @0:14. I love to go railfanning here(I'm from SM), especially finding the 70 tonners.

Yeah, the USMC modernized their fleet of these locos with newer AAR control stands and 26C brake stands.

@RailsandRoads It broke down for reasons I can't remember over 10 years ago. It has had many electrical faults which have a all been repaired. Right now, they're widening the walkways so they can install handrails on the edge of the walkway (instead of on the hood where they are now which makes for a pretty serious fall hazard.) They're also working to try to make it cleaner. ALCOs normally belch smoke like a steam locomotive.
@Locomotive45013 жыл бұрын
@robertgift No, it can move with only one engine running, but it would only have 1/2 the horsepower, 1/2 the tractive effort, and 1/2 the air compressor power working.

@Locomotive450 the 1801 (i believe) was used in that kids movie, "there goes a train" if i remember correctly

That's not the original control stand configuration, the 80 tonner were I work has the original control setup, looks nothing like that one. The military made some major improvements to that locomotive during its service life.
@Locomotive45013 жыл бұрын
@RailsandRoads It still does (3 in fact. 1 ALCO and 2 EMDs.) We're working on getting the ALCO running again.

I went on train ride there many years ago,

@RailsandRoads Actually, it was the ALSO MRS-1 (2104). The two EMD MRS-1s are 1809 and 1820.

The engines are idling at 600 RPM, is this machine DC traction drive similar to the 'big boys?'

How do you start up a 7283? Lol 11-29-19
@Locomotive45013 жыл бұрын
@RailsandRoads Well, I'm sure it won't be that much cleaner. Part of the reason is that more smoke means more sparks. Campo is very susceptible to wildfires due to the dry climate. Any spark from a locomotive that lands on something flammable coulde lead to a fire. Also, on a hot day when you have to run with the windowns and doors open, making the engineer inhale all that smoke is deadly. Some even started wearing goggles when they ran the ALCO.
