Why does Batman do what he does? He has the makings of a villain. It would be so easy for him to spiral down into the insanity he fights against. But he doesn't. Despite everything, Batman is a hero. And he's my favourite fictional character.
“Even more than the Kryptonite, he’s got one big weakness. Deep down, Clark’s essentially a good person...and deep down, I’m not”

Man this is so good... Batman is the ultimate tale of suffering and a man who tries to turn it into something good. He continues to fight, he continues to try make sure what happened to him as a child never happens to anyone so no one has to suffer, but he suffers more than all of them. And he suffers because he cares, cares for the victims cares about each death he fails to prevent and it destroys him. Batman is honestly so good I could talk about him all day lol. Anyway, this video is perfect, encapsulates everything about batman, you even made me appreciate Batman Forever a bit more! Keep up the good work, I look forward to your future projects.

Now if only BvS would‘ve told that, outside of symbolism,... If Superman would‘ve been the first life Batman considers taking,... If Superman wouldn‘t have killed,... If Luther would have had any better plan, than trying to frame Superman for a shooting, and a bomb attack,... If they didn‘t just kill of Superman, and with that made him make the choice of either being the worlds savior, or his own forger of fate,... If they didn‘t try to tell the dark knight returns, the death of Superman, and their own story, and in addition to overly build up justice league (by also copying Marvel), in one single movie,... Then it might have been an OK movie.

This exactly why I prefer DC. Because they actually make you think about how these heroes and villains have repercussions in the real world. The film was a complete package and an epic journey from start to finish. I love the graphic novels used, the properly executed punchlines, and the background of the characters introduced. This movie did a great job showing the sheer power and destructive capabilities of Demi-gods/Superheroes/Heroes/Kryptonians under on Earth. I am insanely in love with this cinematography and combat sequence. Notice how the female characters didn't bash the man's masculinity or invoke any "girl power" nonsense? And still, they came off as a powerful female character in the movie. (WW, Faora, Luis Lane, Mera, HQ and Martha). That's good writing by Goyer, the Nolan brothers, and Zack Snyder. Also brilliant acting by everyone. I hope WB/DC/HBOMax continues Zack's Vision while also producing standalone films like Joker and The Batman. I love the two versions, and I know Zack's films are expensive to produce but we're just asking them at least stick to the plan so that they can produce it five years even.

Superman is a really good guy. Batman has physical damage like all of us. He's as crazy as the Joker, but he controls his madness ...
@nodiggity9472
@nodiggity9472 3 жыл бұрын
Batman *is* every bit as mad as the Joker, but they are *both* absolutely boss level at controlling their own madness. They're both obsessed with controlling every tiny detail of whatever their routines are. They're both super-adaptive psychopaths, both hyper-charismatic leaders, they both compartmentalise. I think the main difference between them is that Bruce/ Batman's narcissism is functionally dynamic as part of Bruce Wayne's elite billionaire playboy identity. Whereas Joker, molded by completely different environmental and formative factors, his narcissism is malignant.

I have always disagreed with the "insane or paychologically damaged" because it is a myth that batman is psychologically damaged. These are the opinions of several psychologists and experts that have destroyed the "Batman is inane" myth , again and again... 1. Dr. Robin S Rosenberg wrote a book and an article (which is an excerpt from the book) to explore and find out whether Batman fits any psychiatric disorder. In her article, she debunks several illnesses associated with Batman namely: Dissociative Identity Disorder, Post Traumatic Stress Disorder, Antisocial Personality Disorder. She then starts discussing the behaviours and then says those behaviours were normal and didn't assign any mental illness to those behaviours. 2. Dr. Travis langley, in chapter 14, called "The Assessment", of his book, says in very clear terms that Batman has no specific illness and is not insane or has any kind of mental issues. This is an excerpt from the chapter 14 of his book (the assessment) word for word without paraphrasing:- "Is he psychotic, homicidal, suicidal or gravely disabled? No. Does he have post traumatic disorder?? Even though he shows some symptoms, No. Does he have multiple personality disorder?? Even if that were the correct name for the disorder, no, that one's so far off the target, it's ridiculous. He is the one man who plays several roles and brings different characteristics to different situations with full awareness and memory of what he's doing. How about some sort of obsessive condition? No, no more so than the most driven athletes, activists and artists who make great sacrifices to fulfil their callings in life. If he were compulsive, he would have too little controls over his actions to function so effectively and for so long. People can have personality shortcomings without fitting a psychiatric diagnosis. 4. Dr. Praveen K Kambam and Dr. Vasilis K Pozios (both Psychologists) have concluded that Bruce Wayne doesn't have PTSD because he successfully coped with loss and overcame adversity. To be diagnosed with PTSD, you have to maladaptive to a traumatic event. But Bruce coped with his loss and overcame adversity by training himself and being the best version of himself. This is adapting. Not mal-adapting.

This is an excerpt from the book "Batman and Psychology: A Dark and Stormy Knight" written by Travis Langley. "...Taking up a cause when inspired by a loved one’s death and making it one’s life’s work does not mean the person is mentally ill. Batman channels his grief for his parents into the campaign their deaths inspired, but he’s not alone in that regard. Real-world social superheroes, individuals whose misfortunes push them to levels of social activism that touch so many lives, find new purpose in life and make their losses meaningful by striving to keep others from suffering the same. They may follow their new purposes by raising public awareness of the problems, pushing for stricter laws and tougher penalties, lobbying for indirect deterrents like alcohol taxes, or even pursuing perpetrators.Outraged over the lenient sentence leveled against the drunk driver who killed her daughter in a hit-and-run, Candace Lightner made a vow, promising herself “that I would fight to make this needless homicide count for something in the years ahead,” and went on to found Mothers Against Drunk Drivers (MADD, later renamed Mothers Against Drunk Driving)" There are several people in our real world who become social activists and take up real world issues in the wake of a terrible tragedy. This is what Bruce did too.

Grant Morisson (famous Batman author) was asked if he thought Batman was crazy and he said he never subscribed to the idea that Batman is crazy. He said by being Batman, he is being useful to the community. His words not mine. I can give you a link if you want. Dennis O Neil was also asked if batman was crazy and he said no. I can give you the exact quote and source if you want. Now do you think all these people are wrong.. I LOVE this video. I love all of these movies and you did an amazing analysis on all of them, especially batman forever. A much as i love keaton as batman, its clear that kilmer had more development and more of a character arc. One scene that i find applicable to bruce in batman forever is actually from the young justice animated series wonder woman: you indoctrinated robin at the young age of 9 batman: robin needed to help bring the people who murdered his family to justice WW: so he could turn out like you batman: so that he wouldn't great video man, you have earned a subscriber :-) edit: that final line "he chooses to be batman so that no one else has to" reminds me a lot of in batman 89 when he says "its just something i have to do....because no one else can"

Excellent analysis. But I've always thought that Batfleck was already that hopeless even before the Superman showed up. Because his 20 year-run of being the Batman showed him that it amounted to nothing. But he couldn't stop wearing the cape and cowl because he has nothing else to do and no one else to be, which makes him grieve over his parents even more. So he has grown even more hateful towards anything he deems wrong. And seeing the criminals cower in fear and pain maybe alleviates the pain for a bit, and probably enjoys it. And so it has become a drug. And the Martha scene was the wake-up call.

God dam! This is just beautifully put together, beautifully tragic but yet hopeful and mentally strengthening, It has so much to show the real and damaged would we live in today, to emphasise what choice is to someone, the true psychology of this has help me through out the years and this just fully completes the true meaning, and I believe it's a strong basis to show how much we need to look at the duality of our own human existence, and rise and embrace the fear we live with and don't acknowledge, Its something to idolise a comic book hero, but it is something else and the impact it can have in the real world. Looking back, I think my misgivings with BvS has more to do with the portrayal of Lex Luther. While the idea of him being the antithesis of both Batman and Superman makes a great deal of sense, it was executed poorly I believe. For me, he came off as more sniveling and unhinged; an element of chaos, a second rate Joker knockoff rather than the brilliant machiavellian corporate mogul we all know. blowing up capital hill (that incriminated him) and blaming Superman was shit plan at best which just shows his lack of rational thinking and foresight. Lex's hatred for Superman was somewhere between mirroring Batman and outright jealously or an atheistic loathing of the notion that a godlike being among us but ultimately felt ambiguous as a whole. His hatred for Superman always made the most sense for me that Lex sees himself as the pinnacle of human achievement while Clark simply won the lottery. Lex worked to be exceptional where as Superman was born special. As a Villain, Lex is always at his best when he manipulates Superman into, for lack of a better word, falling from grace. Not in the "do what I say or your mother gets it" but rather "Everyday you let Batman live, more people suffer. Can you live with that? Knowing that you could put an end to his reign of terror?". But like Productions Journal put it, Batman is the villain, as jarring as the sounds, BvS. Lex is a just forced narrative to push along the plot.

The reason why he continues to do these the answer lies in The Dark Knight rises movie " The idea was batman can be anyone batman is a symbol" , as a man flesh and blood he can die but as a symbol he can live forever. He was hoping that if he grow old and die someone will take his place and principles.

I have to admit the Batman who laughs really anoys me. It doesn't seem right to me that the joker toxin would change his motivations and not hamper him instead, he just becomes a high performance plot armoured chaos demon. It shows everything wrong with modern Batmam. Batman after all is just a man and is best in stories independent from the justice league and metahumans.

I often wonder if the alienation of Dick Grayson so much a part of his origin as Nightwing is a bit of Bruce’s choice and not just a consequence of his obsession; A conscious decision to alienate Dick from his own darkness and the path of being The Batman, to encourage him to make a choice.

Great as always! I’ve gotten so used to the Dark Knight Trilogy and Arkham games that I never really had any second thought to Batman Forever and BvS. I hope one day you explore why Batman and Joker compliment each other like no other villain and hero ever will. Order vs. Chaos. What makes Batman so enduring to me is that he embodies “order.” By brute force, fear, cunning and crime solving. All that is chaotic, all that is unlawful, all that is disorder he dismantles those things piece by piece until everything is made right. Until order is restored. That one aspect of his nature has always been enduring and why his polar opposite, Joker, has always been extraordinarily complimentary. The yin and the yang.

Batman is the greatest Superhero of all time. A terrible tragedy happened to him but instead of letting the situation control him, he got up, stopped whining and took control of the situation and set meaningful goals for himself. Batman can own anything and everything and yet he chooses to spend his money on charity and on his mission as Batman to rid the world of crime sacrificing his body, health, joy and peace in the process. He is our collective rage at injustice and oppression. He is a man searching the dark alleys of his mind to bring balance to an unjust world. He is a social activist. When we step back to gaze long upon the great Batman tapestry, when we look for the common thread woven through it by Kane, Finger, Fox, O’Neil, Englehart, and that endless line of creators, those who have come and gone as well as those who are still weaving, what do we see? We see a hero. We see someone we’d want on our side, a figure we’d love to call forth from our shadows and hurl at those who would do us wrong. We see that part of ourselves that wants to scare all of life’s bullies away, and we like it. He is driven. He is like a revolutionary who stands up to tyrants or the activists who fight against great odds to make this world a better place. Out of tragedy, great good can arise.

Batman will forever be my favourite fictional character too. I think its because he is so relatable to me. Having dark sides and being messed up but still trying to do what he think is the right thing. But he is a walking tragedy. And martyr. He is my hero, but now days I dont know if I would like to celebrate him. He cant turn his life around and be all sunshine and roses, i get that. But he fails to let people in, think everyones suffering is his responsibility and that he is more than a normal man. Other people suffer and thats not his responsibilaty. That do not mean that he dont have " power and knowledge" to help. You can aid and help. But you cant loose yourself in it and let it consume and destroy you. It will only hurt people around you. Even if you dont let them close to you. You are only repeating the pattern. A lifeguard is taught that when trying to rescue someone drowning, you have to make sure that the person calms down so they dont panic and cling on to you and make you drown too. They even kick them further away if they try to cling on to you in a panic. Once they calm down and come to their senses, its okey to proceed and help them. Whats the point in both dying, even if you are trying to save them. In that sense, the drowning victime saves himself too. Many of us is taught from a young age, I know I was, to be a martyr and be selfless. But thats not really being genuine and healthy is it? You actually create more havoc in the world because of it. Being a martyr and a victim. Needles to say I have done all of these things and I`m still doing them. But Im trying to turn it around every day. This was meant to be about batman, dont know if I succeeded hah, but I love your video!! Nothing intrigues me more than Batman and his psyche. I love batman and he is still my hero because he is trying to do good even though he is hurting. ( alot of regular mortal men and women does this, just like batman, and are real living heroes) I just wish he would start taking care of himself :)

This is good. The first 2 hours of BVS ultimate edition were absolute love but the Martha scene(idea was good) was executed poorly And one that always puzzled me was if Batman had his inflection point after he gave up on killing Superman and decided to save Martha, he still kills those goons at the warehouse (also the dudes in the car with his plane) so it really felt like a bummer. That inflection point should've made Batman come back to the light and stop killing(because the purpose of him killing, his hunt for Superman, was done)

In defense it was mostly in self defense against a group of heartless mercenaries; he did make a promise to himself at Clark’s funeral that though he failed Clark in life but he won’t in death, saying that he will now try to become who he use to be again with his faith in humanity restored because of Clark’s sacrifice. Plus the whole Martha was probably done better than people claim imo, Clark wasn’t intended to fight Bruce but it was Bruce that demonized his view of Clark for over a year and it was Clark pleading to the guy about to kill him to save someone else rather than himself.

As much as I dislike Ben Afflecks Batman and feel that Snyder doesn’t understand the character, I feel like his Batman could’ve worked very well had he not actually killed anyone. Him trying to kill Superman would’ve been much more effective if he had to justify it to himself as his first murder, deluding himself. Then after sparing Clark’s life he completes his arc and realised his wrongdoings, meaning he can have a great character story, without avoiding the consequences of killing people. It was also ruined by the fact that afterwards he goes on to kill more people, despite the fact that he was supposed to be against that.

Great video analysis of the Batman in film but I'm a bit puzzled as to how the Burton Films were omitted from the analysis. Though I don't blame since the Burton Films highlight how Batman is the true identity while Bruce Wayne is merely a mask.
@ProductionJournal
@ProductionJournal 3 жыл бұрын
I've always felt that the Burton films never quite did anything great with Bruce Wayne. I loved the dark and brooding aesthetic and the theme of isolation however there wasn't anything across the two Burton films that really stood out to me with interest (nothing, at least, that the films I spoke about here did any differently). I originally had them in my script but cut them out when there wasn't really any insights I could provide!
@Senate300

@@ProductionJournal Fair enough. The Burton Films did more with the Batman identity than Bruce Wayne. Batman 89 had Wayne equally mysterious, socially reclusive and Vicky Vale as a love interest/Journalist served to break him out of his shell abit. The Joker killing helped incorporated him into the Batman Mythology. With Batman Returns, Wayne is more sociable and fully immersed in the Batman Identity. With Selina Kyle/Catwoman he found a sort of kinship due to her own conflict with duality but no relationship would ever work between them. Penguins ongoing resentment at society being dumped in the sewer by his parents for his deformity manifested itself in genocidal manners. Still BR was more Burton than Batman. The psychological aspects were reserved for the villains. Under Burton, Batman was as ruthless as the criminals he hunted.

@@ProductionJournal The Joel Schumacher Films focused too much on being child friendly to the point where any depth to them were overlooked as you've highlighted with Batman forever. Schumacher's Gotham was a perfect neon metropolis that looked like it had an impressive nightlife rather than a crime ridden Hell on Earth, which is what I remember most. With Batman Forever, Bruce Wayne's evolution on his view of Batman went from being a curse to a choice.

This is a quote ad-verbatim from a book written on Batman's psychology by Steven Langley, "He makes meaning from his parents’ murders with a bedside prayer in which he vows to wage war on all crime. He makes meaning of trauma in a few days where it takes the rest of us several years." This is another excerpt from the book "Batman and Psychology: A Dark and Stormy Knight" written by Travis Langley.

Yes, Dr. Travis Langley actually reached out to me on Twitter to express his content with how I reflected his studies in this video. But after all, I think this is a very subjective discussion. I like to think of Batman as being this hero that's just as psychologically damaged as the evil he fights yet chooses compassion over revenge.

@@ProductionJournal With all due respect, just because you choose to think so doesnt make it true ..does it? I can choose to look at superman as an evil warlord but the truth remains that he is an ideal of hope right? When writers bend themselves backwards to tell you that Batman is the epitome of sanity then as far as the vast history of Batman is concerned...did what you said make sense? There was a time when a hack psychologist decided to read homosexuality into Robin and Batman's relationship but is it true according to how their relationship is written..

DC made a god Superman and maybe thought a god wouldnt fight the world war 2, so one year later they made the most tragic and most relatable superhero the batman, if people started reading this it would make them want to be Batman over superman. The movies just went a step ahead with comics after the war, they made him even more realistic with all his pain coming one after the other through years eg robins death, barbara's incident and so on. They made him a superhero who we can relate to with our own personal demons. Batman is the mortal superhero who can never die.
