The Psychology Of Gatekeeping

Every fandom from Fashion to Football and yes Dungeons and Dragons have gatekeepers trying to keep new fans out of the community or bend over backwards in order to be accepted.
Understand the psychology behind it doesn't mean you have to excuse or put up with unacceptable behaviors, but I hope this can be a tool which helps both sides meet in the middle.

Part of what's being missed - particularly in the D&D space - is the distinct difference between young new players with different ways of viewing the world, versus people that are activists first and gamers second, if they're even gamers at all. D&D has been FLOODED with the second kind who've made it their mission to "decolonize", "subvert", and "deconstruct" the entire space until it's no longer recognizable. They're cynical, dishonest, and SPOILING for a fight. I'm against gatekeeping, for the most part. But for this second type of hobby activist, I make a STRONG exception.

@@ZackApplewhiteDNDthose that want to game their own way, are often not content with that. Many demand that all incorporate “their own way” into your own way. The prime example of this is to make the following statement on Twitter X or Reddit: “I will not use safety tools at my table, because I don’t need them”. Sit back and watch the hate roll in. You’ll get blocked by many as well. Some will screen cap your Tweet and share it within their circle and call for you to be blocked by all within that circle. So clearly, there is a VERY GOOD reason to gate keep your table. Keep your table safe from hobby tourists that are agenda driven rather than “I’m here to play a game, roleplay a character and have fun”.
