This really needs to happen in most art disciplines unfortunately. You see this happening in film a lot lately, especially on social media. The internet has been an amazing tool for many things, but it's also created a lot of "layman experts" who have not seen, read, or done the research on the subject they're speaking on, and it's creating this rise in "anti-intellectualism" which is really sad to see.

Fashion circles are like cultural cuisines, people take pride in showcasing it cause it's a tangible form of unique expression to your background interests, but easily abused by people who see that expression as the next marketable thing. Ube for example is a Philippine dessert flavour profile that's blown up (at least in the US). While Filipinos are generally happy to share that flavour profile and generally happy to see it implemented into Western style snacks, it becomes an issue when companies ignore the roots and dilute the flavour to purple sugar, because it looks like the next cutest item to sell and less because they care about Filipino culture. Fashion unfortunately has taken alt styles like skate, goth, streetwear, etc cause there's money to be made out reselling the aesthetics who's roots have always lies in anti-conformism.

There is an equilibrium. As hobbies/activities get diluted by the casual base, there is a necessary reaction from more hardcore bases to rehydrate the original passion/creativity/ideas that made the concept interesting/avant garde in the first place.

Most of the time when I hear people talking about gatekeeping it's not even the true definition. It's people not wanting to put forth any type of research or effort towards finding, or learning about something. I never get why people spend so much time telling someone else they "aren't unique" just to try to be, or dress like them. I see this soo much online. Almost anything can be searched for with google, but people try to burn others at the stake if they dont give a rundown of everything they have on head to toe. If that person isn't unique why does it matter if they gatekeep? I think its perfectly fine for people to keep details about their garments to themselves. Is it a serious matter? No. Are folks entitled to information about someone's personal style? Also no.

So true man I love this comment. I've learned to limit my interaction with those people. Well it's more of I just dgaf anymore. Same people telling me I'm contrarian hipster who doesn't like anything popular, yet I wear Jordans... Then they don't like Jordans think they aren't fashionable because they are popular... .. huh? I just know what I like, buy and wear whatever however I want. I got sick of people projecting and telling me what is or isn't cool.

Healthy gatekeeping is important. And we have ways to deflect the people just visiting. I don't tell anyone about my sneaker channel, I'd rather they find it through a video about a kick they were looking up. To find what I put out you obviously have to be in to sneakers. Does that mean less views and subs? Yep. But my audience stays genuine, pure, and not fickle.

I was anti-gatekeeper when I was younger, but have strongly grown toward at least a healthy bit of gatekeeping being necessary. The push for every interest to be more mainstream has forced those of us into those things to become more and more niche in what we enjoy. It's cool, in a way, to create further spaces for people like yourself to thrive, but it can also be annoying (or worse) to feel like an alien or to feel ostracized in the community you love.

Idk if gatekeeping is the right word for it, but I'm very much pro tiered entrance into things. Like ya, have a "everyone welcome" mentality for the outer most section of a subculture, but you don't get the keys to the kingdom there. That's just a taste, you gotta show your interest and appreciation runs deeper, and that you _respect_ what that culture is all about so you don't abuse it. Only then do you get brought in a bit more, see a bit more, experience a bit more. Until you get to the point you're FULLY immersed in the culture. Ideally each tiered level would prevent those who aren't deserving of access to the next tier, so as not to ruin the vibe for the more dedicated. Knowing where and when to stay in your lane of appreciation, and recognizing you don't need to go full tilt into the nucleus tier of it if you aren't really about that, and then trying to CHANGE what it is just because you don't relate to the inner most tier. How you'd go about implementing that I have no idea, or if that's even possible, but on paper that feels like the way to do it

I want to have a soft form of gatekeeping. Specifically anyone is free to see if they like something, but in order to learn more about it, it takes some effort on ( general ) your part, to look forward into say...Goth Rock, Streetwear, and so on. That way you only keep the truly motivated, rather than those that want to try to change the style or aesthetic. In particular on pinterest, I've had so many pin concepts stolen by Shein that it really bums me out.

I noticed this trend of needing to gatekeep from two communities: small business and dating groups. Quality of information and questions are low-quality, basic, and repeated ad-nauseam when it’s a free group; newbies don’t know how to use the searchbar. However, once there’s a monetary barrier setup (i.e. mastermind groups), the participants and quality of discussions become more sophisticated and higher quality. Gatekeeping, whether via information or financial is needed to have a stronger community for certain niches. I agree with fashion needing gatekeeping wholeheartedly

I´ve always been pro gatekeeping. It´s just like you said. As soon as something or someone becomes mainstream they dilute that one aspect that makes it special so it becomes easily palatable to everyone and I end up losing interest. Tha brings also a poor quality in production and oversaturation. Now everyone else is also trying to join in the profits and that thing is all you see with every turning of a corner. If we´re talking about a community/sense of self situation...it´s wrecked. Because now you don´t belong to anything and you still don´t belong to the community you rejected or has rejected you. Gatekeeping doesn´t mean that others can´t join in. It means protecting its soul. Google is free and readily available. Let the newcomers do the necessary work.

First of all, I still think gatekeeping is uncool. Being elitist is never cool. Coming from unpivileged third world country and trying to learning as much I can do from internet is the only way I keep up with the zeitgeist. I hate being special because I know something that the other people do not, I feel special if I could share it anyway. Feeding your own ego is never been a way in Eastern philosophy, I have learnt to let go since I was a kid. Maybe gatekeeping is such a Western way of thinking, I dunno.

unfortunately most gatekeepers (or at least the most vocal ones) these days don't actually care about maintaining the history and heritage of a brand, piece, etc. they just do it because they're pretentious and dont even understand when someone genuinely wants to learn for the sake of learning, instead of abusing the knowledge. it's also worth noting how context dependent gatekeeping is, like theres a huge difference between gatekeeping a brand to preserve its heritage and consumer base or prevent prices from skyrocketing due to resellers versus gatekeeping outside of brands, like people who gatekeep entire hairstyles and traditional clothing based on where youre from (the latter being pretty harmful)

As an anti-gatekeeper this was one of my favorite uploads. I grew up loving Yohji Yamamoto since i was a kid. Along with Initial D and Martial Arts/Tricking and hardcore/metalcore music. And based alot of my style on these hobbies of mine growing up. During high school the likes of Paul Fuentebella would more than likely make fun of me with his bro friends about my style. And now that alot of these things have popularized in recent years, i think he has collected efforts into kicking me out of all my hobbies. Avant garde fashion being the finale for him. Just to save his brand as a youtuber.... Im disabled now but still try to enjoy my hobbies but im certain the likes of Paul Fuentebella has to diffuse my existence in these communities to better protect his branding. Which is causing me to self harm.

A good example of gatekeeping is a drivers license, firearm license etc. I believe in openess and transparency as much as anybody but you need to also have standards. I do believe than the mainstream fashion industry is gatekeeping its French and other European cultures for themselves. I think it is ok. I do not believe that people who are not from or descend from European cultures should be forced to wear only that clothing because clothing is for everyone. I am happy there are African and African American designers of their own brands as well as other people of color so all people can have a choice.
