Man Joffrey VS The high sparrow would have been epic. lol. He would have killed him long before he got into power. For that alone, I kind of miss him...
@visemarraellaeris36447 жыл бұрын
Unlike Ramsey, people were actually able to control Joffrey pretty well. Tyrion and Tywin both intimidated him, especially Tywin and Joffrey don't always get his way. Ramsey was just a beast who wasn't intimidated by anyone and actually could fight and do damage. Ramsey is a much more capable and frightening villain than Joffrey who does much worse.
@raffa44564 жыл бұрын
And for some reason, people didn't hate him as much. Probably because he wasn't so incompetent. I swear, incompetence is something people hate more than cruelty. Watching someone get his way, even through immense cruelty and manipulation, people are fascinated by that and want to see how they do it.
@godlessfornicater4 жыл бұрын
Hmmm... I wonder how much worst Joffrey would have been if he reached that age? Maybe people hate Joffrey more because he was cruel to characters viewed as sweet and honest on the show, while Ramsey we mostly see him torture and break Theon which is viewed as a traitor and "bad person" so it might not have such an impact?
@possessedslig3 жыл бұрын
The only reason Joffrey was remotely scary was his position, take the crown off his head and he wouldn't have lasted five minutes in the real world. Ramsay on the other hand would still have been a dangerous person.
@Youngmacho Жыл бұрын
If Joffrey had learned to fight and many other things and was older I think he would’ve been worse like Ramsey, he’d be a real menace
@louisebrind83268 ай бұрын
Joffrey was controllable and easily killed off in my opinion. Ramsey is an entirely different demon altogether. Joffrey became annoying towards the end whereas Ramsey I was waiting to see what he’d do next. He’s next act of evil was always more shocking than the next. He’s death was great and worth enough for the boss level villain he was.
@matthewdietzen67083 жыл бұрын
Most of Joffrey's bad behavior can be explained by observing that he was the product of an incestuous union, that he was poorly parented and made into a weakling and a coward with poor character, and that he was then made into a king as a teenager just so his family could have power, and that, observing that he was surrounded by sociopaths and killers, he attempted to overcompensate by trying to terrorize everyone with acts more vicious than what he had already seen to compensate for his own perceived weakness and the fear it generated in himself. A key scene is when he is humiliated in front of Sansa by Arya and her wolf. His entire demeanor changes after that. I think Cersei and Tywin were worse villains by far. They created Joffrey, raised him, made him king, and failed to check his worst excesses. However, it's easier to hate Joffrey because he's a spoiled whiny child, and a weakling.

I couldn’t say It better. Accurate analysis.
@BJenno Жыл бұрын
I believe his cruelty stems from how his father treated him. I’m not excusing what he did; but when you become hated by your father, it really mentally damages a child’s confidence. And I think he projects his trauma onto people.
@jorgebersabe29311 ай бұрын
That's half of the truth: Robert was an absent and abusive father who loved the fun parts of parenting but not the responsibilities that come with it. The other half of the truth is that Cersei made him believe that he was entitled to everything he desired, inflating his ego at every turn and anytime he had a whim, she indulged it.

First lets get straight. A Psychopath is a Sociopath who has besides the diagnosis of being a sociopath other underlying mental health conditions.Albert Fish was a Psychopath. -One of the most evil men who ever lived..The person who I think Joffrey resembles is Giles de Rais .Serial Killers feel fear- for themselves-Ted Bundy by the accounts I read had to be dragged to the chair.Charles Starkweather went on a murder spree killing 13 people across Nebraska. Pursued in a high speed chase by a State Trooper in eastren Colorado- his car's windows were shot out . When his car stopped moving he stumbled out of the car bleeding from splinters of glass sobbing."Look at me I'm bleeding " he cried. People like Starweather ,Bundy and Joffrey have -um- comical reactions when they get hurt back.
@godlessfornicater4 жыл бұрын
@eviltreemonster How is it well know that inbreeding causes psychopathy? Royalty was inbreeding for centuries almost everywhere. If there is a link between psychopathy and inbreeding, I would tend to think it's more about the mental state of the parents. Incest is a taboo in almost every culture (it is in GoT too) so the parents already show problematic behaviors and antisocial signs. (That's if it's consensual, if not it's even worst.) So the psychopathy of the inbred child could have more to do with how he is raised than having recessive psychopath genes? Does psychopathy even show up in the genes? I would like to see if you have studies, I'm curious about the subject.

I was hoping you would talk about Joffrey’s relationship with Marjory. Do you think he was faking being nice to her, or did he finally felt loved and accepted (what he desperately needs but never get from his father) by her and that’s why he was less cruel for a period of time?
@Vetrarland2 жыл бұрын
I think Margaery did a masterful job at manipulating Joffrey, it seemed like she was probably the person he ended up respecting the most. She knew how he worked and how to handle him to the point of him pretty much only listening to her and if she was unhappy with something, she knew how to voice her concern and he backed down. It looked like he felt seen and accepted (I'm hesitant to say loved because there's very little love to be seen in him), Margaery took interest in what he liked and not only talking about it but also taking a part in it. Take the crossbow scene for an example, no one was probably interested in his new crossbow then Margaery comes in and acts excited about it, compliments its looks, wants to know how it works and asks if she can hold it. The look on his face after she asks him if he thinks she could kill something and seeing Margaery holding the crossbow with him like he's thinking "I've found someone that gets me and is worthy of my respect". That's just one example but overall I think he didn't think of her as beneath him like pretty much everyone else and enjoyed her company since Margaery kind of had him wrapped around her fingers. The question would he have eventually abused Margaery is questionable. He could have gotten bored with her especially if Margaery started slipping up on keeping him under control. It could've continued the way their relationship was and Margaery was already helping with shaping him into a better king, not a great king but you can see he did things she suggested that made him look like a better king in the eyes of the people. When she convinced him to walk together to the balcony and greet all the people, being hesitant at first but when they did go together and wave to everyone he looked happy and almost impressed when he looked at Margaery. Long story short, I think Margaery was the only person he ended up respecting and enjoyed her company, to the best of his abilities. With Margaery's manipulation skills she honestly could've created a powerful kingdom. Joffrey was still very young and that's an age where you're being "molded" as a person and with Margaery by his side who has the ability to mold him, to the best of her abilities of course.

Can't believe I put this playlist off for so long - it's great! Thoughts on sadism: normal people might recognize cage fighting as consensual. I've struggled to keep watching football myself, knowing all the research coming out about brain injuries, and see cage fighting similarly (personally). Unless there are incredibly strict regulations and agents can give fully informed consent, it triggers tf out of me. When that level of consent is met, though? I have no guilt, and can definitely see the cathartic, even attractive nature of it Thanks as always for the content Dr H! I don't comment or react often, but if you/the team see this, very much appreciate what y'all do! It's inspiring and motivated me to get back in school for psychology myself:)

I didn't read the books, so hearing all about this other side of Joffrey really surprised me. It seems like Joffrey is more 1 dimensional on the show compared to the books. You don't see much, if any, of his human side. I was shocked when you talked about how the book Joffrey sent the assassin to kill Bran for mercy, even if it was only to impress his father. I could never imagine the show Joffrey doing that.

Psychology In Seattle The only thing I'd disagree on is when you said if not for the Red Wedding the North and Robb Stark would have probably won the war. Actually, by the time the Red Wedding occurred the Northern cause was pretty much lost, the Ironborn has taken most of the western coast of the North and the held Neck, his army had been badly depleted by a number of defeats and the Karstark's leaving, the Iron Throne had just brought the Reach back into the fold (And House Tyrell are the second most powerful House in Westeros after the Lannisters), Dorne was back too along with the Stormlands and soon the be the Vale. So all in all it was only a matter of time before the Iron Throne came out on top. Just nitpicking though. Forgive me, lol

I think Joeffrey tried to impress his mother. In fact, Cersei loved Robert from the beginnning (at least, when he was king, before, she might have loved Rhaegar). As she said to Ned, the first night they had, Roberts whispers "Lyanna" which was an humiliation for Cersei because she was inferior to a dead woman. That may be the reason why Joeffrey tried to impress his mother. To proves her he was ready to rule, with her, so she could have her revenge.
@PsychologyInSeattle8 жыл бұрын
Agreed.
@ngominh2597 жыл бұрын
You forgot many occasions which he disobeyed and insulted his mother. Joffrey did try to impress his mother, but I think this is not his main motive. He strove to be a man, a king. So he looked for the closest thing he had for such a figure: Robert. Robert drank, Robert whored but Robert mainly looked down on others - giving Joffrey the notion of being kingly. So I think Joffrey took this and combined it with his abusive nature (from killing animals out of curiosity) to rule.
@lizett3465 Жыл бұрын
The theory about Cercei being in stress because she was worried about the hair and eye colour of her first child doesn't fit into the whole GoT story. The whole first book drama is built around the face that Jon Arryn was the first person ever in Westeros to discover genetics :D If people in the story understood how inheritance of such features works, there wouldn't have been the whole plot around Joffrey and Gendry.

Psychology In Seattle Have you thought of doing one on Petyr Baelish? He has some back story, more than Ramsay but less than Joffrey, which you can go on. And he is *the* master manipulator and gameplayer in the series... he has everyone dancing to his tune, even the likes of Tywin and Varys etc. When you see just how much he has done and just how many cards he may have up his sleeve, I honestly think he's one of the greatest villains in literary history. So subtle but so very dangerous. Great video btw, I don't know much about psychology but I got through the whole hour and a half in one sitting.

Ummm it wasn't that Cersei didn't want to have Robert Baratheon's child, it was the fact on their wedding night, the person he called out to was not her but Lyanna - the dead sister of Ned Stark and the woman he loved. It kind of... damaged her pride as a Lannister that boasted good looks, I suppose.
@srreina81177 жыл бұрын
Charred to Death no she actively sabotaged Roberts pregnancy attempts. In the books the only time she got pregnant with one of Robert's true children, she drank moon tea, a natural contraceptive in their world, and shortly after the baby was lost. She said as much to Eddard in the first book.

How do explain Tommen and Myrcella though? They are different like day and night compared to Joffrey.
@PsychologyInSeattle9 жыл бұрын
Raido Soo Good question. Often, in families, we find that one child tends to take on the family pathology. Perhaps Joffrey was elected to be that person.
@shaunflavour63669 жыл бұрын
To me, Jofferys personality would make a lot more sense if he were an only child. My best friend growing up was an only child, he would take pleasure in beating up his cat, punching it for fun. I find only children to be strange and selfish people. The eldest of siblings (like me) usually has a sense of responsibility over the others, which Joffery doesn't have at all.
@PsychologyInSeattle9 жыл бұрын
Yes, for various reasons, children in the same family often have very different personalities: genetics, family role, sibling order, etc.
@JHowesitgoing1238 жыл бұрын
+Raido Soo Don't the books offer a little more explanation? Cersei wasn't nearly as 'invested' in those children as she was with Joff. The show makes it seems like there's genuine love, but there isn't, she's possessive, but not loving. Maybe the extra attention she gave Joff helped tip the scale. We also have to consider the idea that something might be wrong with him, like an actual personality disorder or mental illness, you find that often only affecting one of many children.

Joffrey’s so fun because, regardless of his incredibly infuriating actions, he’s still just a kid. That’s all. Personally I’ve so far found Cersei to be a much more irredeemable villain(only at season two though). She’s just cruel.

Great analysis! I just wanted to comment that while it might not be scientifically proven or accurate, in the ASoIaF universe, mental disorders as a consequence of inbreeding (specially among siblings) is heavily hinted at. The Targaryen are a clear example and along their family tree you could safely say that about half of them were catalogued insane or decent/great rulers, there was even a known saying among common folk and nobility "every time a Targaryen is born the gods flip a coin". The problem with inbreeding is that because siblings have very similar DNA, there's little genetic variation and thus any potential genetic problem that one or both parents may have is more likely to 'show' itself on the offspring.

I kinda feel bad for Joffrey. Like dont get me wrong, the stuff he did was horrid; but he was obviously mentally unwell and had next to nobody guiding him the right way

Cersei did want to marry Robert but it changed on their wedding night when Robert called her 'Lyanna'. Referring to Lyanna Stark, Ned Stark's sister and Jon Snow's mother who ran off with Rhaegar Targaryen.

You got me.. I can’t think of a worse villain.. because I understand why Darth Vader became Darth Vader.. in the end.. you felt for him.. I mean all the happiness and cheers everybody felt when he died on the show.. yes.. the little shit got it.. which is messed up because he was still a little kid.. but he was just that awful.. but when a psychologist gives a conduct disorder diagnosis.. I mean.. without major changes that’s one stop away from a psychopath or similar diagnosis yes.. pretty much a nice way of calling a kid a psychopath.. yeah.. by the way.. that’s a little bit my little sister.. not entirely.. she didn’t hurt animals.. but rarely does everybody fit an entire bill.. everybody thinks I’m adopted when they find out who my family is..

question: would you say that Joffrey is a sexual sadist? At least in the show it seems to be the case. He doesn't show much on sexual tendencies or attraction. When Rose the prostitute try to get off his clothes off him he doesn't like it, but he seems to be excited by seeing Rose mistreating the other prostitute. When Margery tells him she could kill something with the crossbow and would he like it he almost seems sexualy attracted to it. idk just a thought, I always saw Joffrey as a sexual sadistic who torture people because it sexualy excite him while Ramsey does it just for the sake of doing it because he's a pure sadist who love suffering. what is your thought about this?

I forget. Did I talk about sexual sadism in this episode? If not, yeah, he exhibited some of those traits.

They probably took out the "sadistic personality disorder" classification because people didn't like the way it sounded. The word "sadistic" became commonly used, with a negative connotation. Kinda like "retarded". It just sounds like an insult, because it's been misused as one, more often than not. And even when it isn't being used as an insult, the fact that it SOUNDS like one automatically offends those with delicate sensibilities and/or those predisposed to find and take offense wherever they can.
