folders by decade (i can search by year but this way I can browse for ideas). By genre (slow, disco, old skool hip hop, rap, grinders, motown, country, etc, pop dance, participation (line dances, etc) I also have a folder 'top 200 of 2021', 'top 100 2021 (billboard)' I also have folders for cocktail, dinner, ceremony, etc. I also have a whole separate school dance section. So I too play a mix and see what gets a response and also gage the age/years of the songs that hit. MOST people favor music from their HS/college years.
@MrWright76722 жыл бұрын
The question I am trying to get an answer too is, do you organize it like that in you DJ system or is it like that for the main location of you have your music? Or are all your songs in 1 music folder and you just put it in a create for which ever you need it for as you described? Most of these videos show how they have it on the system they are you not so much for how they have it on the computer or where they store all their music.
@chrisperry35252 жыл бұрын
@@MrWright7672 i let itunes organize the files on teh hard drive (for better or worse, that's where i get most of my music). I use VDJ and have the songs in 'folders' (or playlists or crates or whatever you want to call them). MOST songs come in with a year..USUALLY the year it was first released, but re-masters and such oftenhave say, 2010 on a frank sinatra album, so I google what year the songs were released and edit the tags in VDJ. I decide what genre they are for my lists. I've not split country down too much...need to work on that I suppose, as the 'experts' see western swing, 2 step, etc subdivisions. Same for latin music - puerto rican music is different than mexican, spanish, etc. Some is crossover, much is not. And then there is mariachi, etc...I'm still learning.

@neil12416 жыл бұрын
Hi Phil, I ran a mobile from the early 80's to the early 2000's, as people were arriving I would play a mix of music at a relatively low volume and watch their reaction as they looked over at me and the rig or stood at the bar buying their first drink, looking for noses being turned up or feet tapping, also if there were lots of children there I would play some kids party music, agadoo and the like, the kids would then drag older brother/sister, Mum, Nan and sometimes even Dad up on the dance floor, keep this going 15 - 30 mins then move gently into some dance pop, kids might sit down but Mums and Nans would normally stay on the floor. Just bought a second hand Numark deck and me and my son have been practicing with the help of your videos. Who knows, the might be the resurrection of my DJing career, the combination of mid 50's dad and early 20's son might just work :) Keep up the good work

Great video. Very appropriate for DJs that are unsure of how to read a crowd and are afraid to not play the “cool music.” Most of us are getting paid to play what people at an affair want to hear not just the edgiest, coolest, trendiest music. There are only so many Tiestos and Chainsmokers in the world. The rest of us make money by doing exactly what this video says. Thanks. This affirms what I’ve felt for years.

Hey Phil, really liked your post. Been DJ'n for circa 15 years, and I'm very similar to your self with feeling the vibe of the dance floor. However, recently I feel like I'm drowning in music and really struggling to create a streamlined workflow. I like your crate organistion it's very simple. I've got sub-folder upon sub folders and I'm constantly stressing in-between tracks trying to find things ! I'll definately take some inspiration from this.

I had an opportunity to DJ at a wedding, pouring my heart into the turntables. However, the guests weren't dancing, so I approached the groom's father and asked if they didn't like my music. He revealed that both families never wanted the wedding to happen. I was stunned but quickly switched to playing bohemian music, getting everyone to sing, drink, and dance. It was one of the most challenging missions I can recall.

Good video Phil, I just subscribed to you. The term that i use when evaluating the dance floor is called "Reading the Crowd". A good DJ should know how to "Read The Crowd" and play according to who is on the dance floor just as you explained. A good DJ's job is to keep the dance floor packed and you do that by knowing your music, organizing your crates and being ready to play all genres at any time. I understood what you were saying.

I did a stint of DJing in the late 70s with vinyl/CD and it was fun and your right, you have to read the crowd and take a shot in the dark. I bought a Roland 505 to practice on. May do my first gig in the new year. I'm also watching Serato's videos to learn the mixer skills. Thanks for the insight on your videos. It helps. Regards, Brooklyn Johnny. 1 second ago

i respect your point of view. for me though, djing is presenting music to people that they haven't heard before but they can dance to. for me it's not what the audience is gonna like but what you can present to them. this is why selectors, djs, radiobroadcasters like gilles peterson or soulection are relevant because they school people and allow people to see what's out there and to be discovered not just play the hits that everyone knows. there's a lot of music out there to be discovered. selecting what tracks to play by judging who is on the dance floor sounds like something that won't last.

@chrisperry35252 жыл бұрын
if I rip it, i put it in my 'music folder' and I use virtual DJ..it imports it. I can drag and drop (from a drive or folder) into 'crates' in VDJ. if I buy from itunes I can go into the itunes folder in VDJ and there's a folder there of newly added music.

From across the pond - Hi Mate! Organizing crates in Serato for example is like "to each his own" as for me I've been DJ'ing since the 70's at the clubs (showing my age) I'm more comfortable setting up crates by genre, decade's and Artists such as Pitbull, Rihanna, All Disco, 80's, 90's & Y2K1 and 2. I also named crates Wedding, Club 1, Club 2, Club Sexy (adult related), Remix, Bounce, Classic Rock, Country, Sinatra & Presley, The Beatles and Club Latin ideal if spanish is NOT you're 2nd language (lol) What I like about serato DJ lite and pro, under the album directory for each song I can comment per song almost like a rating system. It's time consuming but well worth it. I strongly recommend for all DJ's is to simplify, don't complicate your music files. All my best to you all, party on!

It is interesting how important it is for you to "read" the people, and compare it to how impossible that is for me because i'm DJing in VR. I'm from the late 70's-90's club DJ crowd and have been away from DJ'ing since then but of course still in my blood stream and looking into the current scene of DJing and doing some small events. Everything Phil says about "reading" your audience is so true. And as he says in other video's, you are there to please your audience -- you can still be friendly and professional as a DJ but don't think that having flawless mixes is the key, it's not...you are there to please your audience and want audience members to book you for their own events as well.
