Cagney at his raging best. When agitated, he went into intensity mode, on his way to doing something violent. He was a master of facial expression drama. All-time personal favorite of mine. R.I.P., tough guy.

Cagney was kind of like the male Garbo. He could do a scene with his face alone and no dialogue. Those piercing eyes are enough to keep you captivated for ages!

After Matt was shot Cagney went into a hypnotic rage. One of my favorite scenes in the movie is when he robs the guns from the pawn shop. Watch how Cagney cannot contain his rage during his conversation with the gun owner. Cagney plays calm yet whenever the owner looks away his rage pours out of him. Truly a great actor.

He said he didn't like playing tough guys. He really preferred doing song and dance like "Yankee Doodle Dandy"

Love how this is set up to be the big amazing ending in the film ....then allow him to survive after this another 15 mins in the film just to crank it up even crazier & darker & more gangster & into the best ending ever that u would never expect❤️ its like this movie has like 2 of the best endings ever one after abother , u can turn it off after this scene & still love this movie or u can keep watching to see this scene look weak compared to what comes 10 mins after this scene!!!! I love it

Saw this movie for the first time today and it was really great, I love this scene. It's just a shame that there are people who won't watch a film just because it's in black and white, to those I say to them; you're really missing out on a good film.

@Corno di Bassetto Exactly! And as great as Brando was, John Garfield was still a predecessor to his style of acting. There's just something so special about the films from the 30's and 40's that hasn't been replicated today and that's why I just get lost in the wonder and energy those films have to offer. Funny enough you mention both the Jimmy's because Cagney has always been my top favorite but Stewart sure comes close. He had such a range! But then again they all did. The Golden Age gets it's name for a reason!

I’ve lately seen a few comments on KZbin wherein the poster laments the unpopularity of black & white. I’ve also noticed colorization becoming popular. Please don’t tell me that it is. I thought we settled this in the 90s.

Does anyone know about a film of a boy and man traveling into the woods talking in a foreign language? I recall it was in black and white but I was too drowsy to recall what was the name of the movie.

This scene really reminds me of the restaurant shoot out scene in A Better Tomorrow (though this movie did come out first). Not in terms of action or anything, but the character motivations and emotional impact.

In my opinion, two of Schemer’s men were brothers. One brother was probably shot dead by Tom Powers during his shootout rampage, and that the surviving brother was the person screaming in the hideout, with horror and anguish because of the fact that his brother died. It’s my theory! Let me know what you think!

This is a great theory. I never took it to that length. To me I thought he got a few of Schemers guys but not Schemer himself. And then Schemer got his revenge. Also had a friend that swore it was Paddy that turned on Tom. Bottom line great movie!!!

How many guys were in that place? I did a rough count as they were entering and it seemed like there were about eight going in, and maybe more already inside. And the Cagney character got 'em all? Even if he only wounded some, like the guy screaming. Now that's good shooting! I don't think Wild Bill Hickok in his prime could have done better. "I ain't so tough." Few people are with a couple of .38s or .45s in them.

Best gangster movie ever just cuz it has two endings basically ,one after another , they could have ended it after this scene & it would still be perfecto but they cranked it up to a thousand after this & Made it Even more savage lolz
