With this, the university has to take more specimens inside again to the tanks. This has been happening for some time already. Thank you for bringing us this story, Jen. I struggle to understand the scientific community's criticism against this man's actions. He wasn't trying to establish puffins where none had existed before, he was trying to reestablish puffins in a region where they had once thrived. Isn't this exactly what we all want? And isn't this one of the reasons zoos ostensibly exist, to keep threatened species alive until they can be returned to a suitable habitat in the wild (if one can ever be found for them)? It wasn't the "where" or the "if" the other scientists were objecting to - it was the "HOW" they were having problems with; he was going against the "That's not the 'acceptable way' of doing things around here!", the "That's just not how things are done!" inertia of the other closed-minded members of his scientific discipline, and proved them _wrong,_ as happens more often than you might think.

According to someone in the comments for the first 8 years they tried doing this with 950 baby birds. But no birds were nesting there, not knowing if they simply flew away or died. After more research from his team they managed to get 5 birds to nest. After that it was a success, but at first it seemed like they were just taking puffins there for them to fly away or die. 😅

Not necessarily. They could have done it from pure concern about the well-being of the species. For example: In one of the Indian National parks, a lot of cheetahs were brought from Africa.
