It gave me some interesting food for thought though: I now have a headcanon where an Engineer actually achieves a successful symbiosis with the Engine to where he preserved his personality and pushes his own will back on it to a point. In doing so he manages to bring his part of the CI back closer to its original founding principles. For various reasons in my headcanon the realization that the Engineer not only CAN but SHOULD assert their will is lost for a long dark time. Finding that truth again is a huge win for them.
