Been growing tomatoes and other vegetables since 1968. Have 5 years of formal Ag Science education behind me and still learn new things daily. Most of my friends who recently started gardening have come to me and asked about the GMO seeds thing. Questioning them I find most are just more comfortable buying non GMO seeds. Up till now I explained that if they were buying them in packets in stores or online it just wasn't available at the homeowner/non commercial grower level. Also if I sold seeds in packets I'd put Non GMO on the packet if for no other reason as to keep from having to answer the question. The number of times I've heard "make sure you buy non GMO seeds" as advice gardeners give each other has been quite staggering. I have about 100 packets of tomato seeds I'd like to grow and only have space for 6-8 so it'll be a while before I add more to my grow list. Educate yourselves people... do what you feel comfortable. You don't have to support your choices to anyone but yourselves. Be kind to one another and Happy Gardening.

You touched on the issues with making plants resistant to broad-spectrum herbicides. While it doesn't harm the plants, those plants are absorbing glyphosate. Our grains have been tested and traces of glyphosate are present in them. Glyphosate is a known carcinogen and can cause cancers in mammals. That's why its use has been banned in other countries. While the tomato variety doesn't have that problem, how long will it be until that's not the next thing that will be offered. I worry that other farmers will buy those so they don't have to worry about herbicides killing plants and more glyphosate will show up in our food.

Super appreciate your level-headed explanation, Travis!! Also appreciate you spreading the info that GMO does not always equal 'Round-Up ready', mutant, "I'm gonna be hunted down if I grow this"''. Not the case at all. Using genes from another cell line (even rats or bacteria) does not mean that the resultant plant is something to be feared or hated. It can mean it's an even more beneficial strain for our consumption. Look at our many, many, MANY vaccines and medications. MANY of these were distilled from non-human sources. Penicillin? Bread mold. Would you hate and shun that today? We hope not.

You can't possibly know that. Have you tested those statements on yourself or lab rats ever? Who knows that underlying side effects there will be in making vegetable chimeras from something totally unrelated to it. Could be anything from hyper allergenic mutation, to sterility in future seeds and dependence on seed sellers, to new cross-pollination with other unrelated plants that result in inedible future generations of vegetables. Let's stick with food crops that are naturally occurring. Medicine derived by science is entirely different. They're not chimerizing molds or even viral cultures for immunization with other unrelated creatures. Or at least, if they are, they certainly haven't released any of the results, because of the obvious risks inherent in playing God with nature.

My biggest grip or pet peeve against GMOs is saving seeds. I remember reading a farmer in South Dakota or some place. He always saved his seed for decades. One year his neighbor planted GMOs. It cross pollinated with his corn. He saved the seed and replanted as usual but was sued for saving his seed. GMOs should be illegal to use if your neighbors save seed. Or a farmer should be required to get permission from all neighbors before buying GMOs. If gmo corporations can sue and stop a farmer from saving seed it’s wrong. Especially if that farmer saved seed for decades and it’s the GMOs that screwed the farmer. It wasn’t the farmer trying to steal or reproduce GMOs from seed so they don’t have to buy seed.

Leave the tomatoes alone! You can't find good cornmeal anymore because it's all made from GMO corn and has no taste at all. I long to have the cornmeal we use to get ground at the mill in Florala Alabama. We shelled the corn and took many 50 lb bags to the mill to be ground. I resorted to growing own corn because when you buy cornmeal they remove the oils, which supply the taste, so that it doesn't go rancid as fast. Once it's ground up it, it will decay fast and get bad. You can still buy whole grain, organic corn meal, but I agree, it has a bad taste. I grow my own now and grind it at home. I don't hold it against any seed company for putting non GMO on the packet, after being in several Facebook gardening groups and reading through Facebook and KZbin comments, so many people are afraid they are going to buy GMO and many confuse hybrid with GMO and won't buy seeds that don't have that on the packet. I don't plan to grow them not that I have any issue with them other than price and I save seeds.

Meh, I like baker creek just because they have a large variety of seeds and I like to grow anything I can. When I see an ad for baker creek I honestly don’t even pay attention to the non gmo part. They’re kinda over priced but seems like all seed companies are getting that way. Now, Idk how they managed to get their hands on the seeds for this if the company didnt want them selling them and saying that they were non gmo. I find that a little odd. I will say I’m sick of gmos due to the need for them in a commercial setting. The fact that they need something to withstand the poison being sprayed on them makes me sick. My husband sprays for a big seed company and he was diagnosed with cancer this past year due to the glyphosate being used, he’s only 33.

I don’t think seed companies are necessarily creating fear about GMOs. They’re fielding the question in advance, IMO, because so many people don’t know that GMO seeds are not sold to the general public. I agree that it’s a marketing tool to put the non-GMO tag on seeds and other products including many that have NEVER been subject to genetic modification, but it’s something that many people think about and if adding that tag gives some people peace of mind knowing they aren’t buying GMOs….well, there you go. People who are seriously worried about “accidentally” buying GMO seeds simply need to do some research sand educate themselves. That’s on them, the consumer.

Thank you for this video. The thing that bothers me the most about GMO is how trade right laws were used by large corporation to hurt small farmers, even when the farmer did nothing wrong. They could not stop the wind from blowing the pollen from GMO seeds onto their farm. The rules associated with this new tomato says that you cannot save seeds, which I understand, but if it crosses with anything anywhere down the line and you are not aware and it is found out, you could be liable if you sell the plant or seeds. For me, it is safer to stay away.

Thank you for a thoughtful and reasonable, fact-based presentation on this topic. As well as your honest opinions. GMOs in and of themselves are not inherently evil. It's just a technology. How that technology is applied may - or may not - present other problems. It just depends. Personally, I will stick with non-GMO, OP/heirloom seeds for various reasons. I definitely do feel that now, companies do have an obligation to state clearly whether their seeds are GMO or not. Let the buyer decide.

It sounds like these are more similar to golden rice than they are to the herbicide ready cotton. Golden rice added beta-carotene to rice in the hopes of providing a vitamin A source to stop small children in third world countries becoming blind from vitamin A deficiencies. The rice was meant to be offered to farmers to propagate and sell so no big corporation monopoly forcing farmers to buy it. People lost their chit. I don't know if it ever quite got on the market where it was needed or was distributed where it was needed. I did a quick check to make sure I remembered details (like which vitamin kept kids from being blind) and some of the complaints were utterly absurd. The herbicide ready cotton bothers me more. Genetically modifying something so that we can pour more chemicals into our soil or over our food bothers me a whole lot more than adding a nutrient to food. Designing crops that bugs won't eat makes me wonder if anyone else should eat them, but making food more edible is different than that. Funny on Baker Creek though. I have the catalog with Purple Galaxy on the cover. I didn't try to order seeds of that variety but I did order tomato seeds of the tomato on the new, revised, catalog cover. Turns out it's a first generation hybrid. Which is fine with me and the plant is so far outgrowing the others that I planted at the same time, so it's definitely vigorous. The listings they have on tomatoes are interestingly lacking in information if a variety is open pollinated or a hybrid. I think we're just supposed to assume that they sell Heirloom varieties. New and interesting tomato breeding is good, too, so why not be clear about it?
