i'm 57, and so I grew up on both Soft Cell and the Pet Shop Boys. Both groups songs were huge hits at the dance clubs and that was a magical time indeed. Seeing these two iconic 80's groups together, is epic!!!!

PSB has been very active through the decades. They've always been releasing new albums and tours. They never went away, so this is not a comeback for them. Regarding "The Purple Zone" I LOVE THIS SO MUCH. I take it lyrically as being in a rut and needing massive change in one's life. I love the energy and the meaningful lyrics.

PSB are my all time favorite band/duo. I've always been into electronic music & PSB has never waivered from that. Def a PSB sound to it as with most of their music. From what I learned the term "purple zone" is about getting older & dealing with it. Like we all must do. Thanks for this!

No one does it better than pet shop boys they're quite simply in a league of their own and sadly are dismissed by many people on your side of the pond but to us Brits they have remained on top of the game for 40 years and a little more. They have carried on working all of these years and long may it continue just love Neil and Chris they've given us fans so much over the past 40 years we will always be indebted to their genius.

Have been a fan of the pet shop boys for 40yrs now, it's true soft cell have been missing for many years tho Marc almond has had some solo success, but per shop boys have never stopped bringing out music , would love you review either love is a bourgeois construct or the pop kids by pet shop boys. So happy to see this reaction, great song isn't it

Chris Lowe is a real whiz with the synthesizers, himself and Neil Tennant have a gift for adding a bit of magic to a given song and breathing new life into it. Purple Zone is no exception to this. If you enjoyed this, can I simply take this opportunity to recommend that you check out a song that the PSB did with David Bowie called Halo Spaceboy.

Hi I'm a Pet shop boys fan here in the UK. i hope i can help you by giving you the background of the song... please read it all ... The song itself... Purple zone is 100% written by Marc almond & Dave Ball of soft-cell. in early 2021 pet shop boys [ who know soft-cell well ] attended a soft-cell live performance. in the performance.... soft cell performed a slower version of Purple Zone. & Chris Lowe [ Pet shop boys keyboard player ] loved it. they then went backstage & chatted. over the next few months they started working on it together, doing remixes & making it a single .... which is this in question. The single didn't chart in the real top 100 sales.. but reached number 7 in physical chart. [ which means it's not valid as a charted song ] IMO pet shop boys fan since 1986 it's at a poor standard... you can tell soft-cell are behind this with it's 99% looped chorus. "Let's get out of this life I'm afraid & alone paralyzed in the purple zone." X 400 Times.... making it repetitive boring & if it wasn't for the improved tempo... done by the pets i would've added depressing.. The Meaning behind purple zone... again I'm not a soft-cell fan but i think i know.. written by soft cell remember & they are a very dark & depressing thinking band. the opposite to pet shop boys...so i think it could be one of two... 1. In the UK we have Purple Zones in certain areas... these are high risk areas [ in lock-down ] of Catching Covid. "Let's get out of this life I'm afraid & alone paralyzed in the purple zone." 2. Old age looking at all the people you lost. in Britain we associate the old loving the color purple.. You should definitely check out the 2002 Soft Cell album 'Cruelty Without Beauty' which sounds like it went below your radar. I thought it was really great, full of similarly-themed lyrics about ageing, middle age, culture etc.

What I think they are meaning by the Purple Zone is, well if you look at the video it's generally people in their 40s, 50s and 60s who are looking a bit bored with things I.e. middle-aged. And so there's Neil Tennant saying awake from your "sleep of the dead" and reinvent yourself, let's get out of this life, I'm afraid and alone, paralysed in The Purple Zone (in middle-aged lethargy).😬😖😳😱☹

My assumption on the meaning of "purple zone" is that the color purple is a combination of pink, traditionally associated with girls and blue, traditionally associated with boys. Thus a person in the "purple zone" would be somewhere in the middle sexually and thus non-binary which many of the actors in the video seem to back up. Also the lyrics imply that the person singing is not exactly where they fall on the spectrum or indeed how they got there. There's also a hint of middle-age melancholy tossed in on top of the sexual ambiguity.

While the arrangement borrows heavily from the PSB's own version of "Always On My Mind", it's a great song in its own right, and it had me hooked in a way that ony ABBA's comeback ("Don't Shut Me Down") did before. (I know it's not really a comeback but classic PSB songs like this one have been few and far between since "Very" came out.)

purple zone in this context probably means when women get old and grey they start getting purple rinses 🤷...only other use I've heard purple zone is when you are in the sweet spot and everything's going your way 🤷

I was thinking that it describes someone who's neither a cis male (blue) or a cis female (pink) but rather somewhere in-between as blue plus pink makes purple.

@@glastonbury4304 I just read somewhere else that "purple zones" were set up in medical buildings for Covid cases so it may be reference to that and could also explain why Chris Lowe is wearing a mask throughout the video. I suspect when all is said and done that it's likely all of those things, getting older, sexual identity and Covid plus maybe a half-dozen other things (like royalty maybe or a Prince reference) that none of us suspect.
