No wonder you've been touched by this song. The melody is beautiful, the lyrics are thought-provoking and Neil's delivery is hauntingly wonderful. I simply adore the way he sings. Lots of critics say his style is monotonous and he's not a great and a very technical/virtuoso singer, but for me his voice is full of emotions - love, joy, sadness, melancholy, doubt, grief and so on. His voice fits their songs perfectly. I also think he speaks so nicely, his diction and pronounciation is so pleasing to my ears.

When I saw them live at the O2 in 2009, they dusted this track off, and it's safe to say no one was expecting. Brilliant track.

i think you're right, "suburbia" was inspired by a movie. whether it was a feature film or documentary about the suburbs, though, escapes me. i used to skip "king's cross" on the tape as a kid because it made me unhappy. but i kind of appreciate it better now in my 40s, it's like a sunset in the 80s when you're one of those blessed jet set ones and you're beginning to question the meaning of your existence.

English is not my native language, but as a teenager (many years ago) I did speak English already, but could not understand many of the idioms of the language or things specific to the British culture. So this song's meaning was very elusive to me. Anyway, it is *the* song that got me to really like The Pet Shop Boys. And by the way, I love your reactions. You've got a fan from Brazil.

Ive always wondered what English sung songs sound like to non-English speaking people. There must be alot of songs that really just dont make sense even if you try to translate it. Its the same with Spanish songs. In Spanish the words to a song make sense. But when you try translating it to English it loses its meaning? Kinda ruins it a little. Then you have certain words that aren't even translatable! Very frustrating!

@@SephPlays Yes. Trying to translate literally from another language does not work in most cases, especially in the case of poetry and/ or song lyrics. Even more when there are citations to local places or habits. Some things have to be adapted to make sense in another language and to people with a different cultural background, and some things get lost in translation.

They were asked to release it as a charity single for the Kings Cross fire but declined. "Dead and wounded on either side" - 31 people died in the fire. This tragedy happened a couple of months after actually was released. It is one of the best closing songs of an album.

Fantastic song to close arguably their strongest album - "Actually" from 1987. Understated but full of restrained emotion....

If you want to see a stunning bit of TV, watch this performed live in a medley with Do I have to? at Glastonbury 2010. The crowd are waving cigarette lighters or candles or something and it's all very euphoric

One of my favourites. "I've been guilty of hanging around," is a line always liked too. Although I put my own meaning to it, the line could be read as a subtle admission of being gay many years before Tennant came out. King's Cross is or was a gay pickup area. No doubt Neil would have known this since he had lived in London for well over a decade by this point.

Fascinating. It's written all over your face during the first chorus how much this is resonating with you. (1:10) I have rarely given this tune a second thought even though I'm an avid Pet Shop Boys fan. And that's the magic of your channel. The recontextualization of songs that one may have initially cast aside.

No one has mentioned it here in the comments, but many people kind got spooked by the line about Kings Cross and "dead and wounded on either side" as a couple of months (dont quote me on an exact time span) after the album release we had the Kings Cross fire.

SUBURBIA wasn't about a movie. It's a totally about the Brixton riots in the 80s. Neil himself has said this numerous times in interviews.
