Vedic scriptures don't specify a single goal of life, they specify four - kama, pleasure, artha, wealth, dharma, righteousness, and moksha, enlightenment - four purusharthas. Q&A with Swamiji #10.
The sages of ancient India, the rishis, had a holistic view of life, recognizing both the value and limitations of worldly life (samsara) as well as the importance of transcending worldly life to become enlightened through the discovery of the ultimate source of contentment that lies within us all, the so-called inner divinity called atma, the true self.
Swami Tadatmananda is a traditionally-trained teacher of Advaita Vedanta, meditation, and Sanskrit. For more information, please see: www.arshabodha...

Swamiji, thank you! Self-knowledge is truly the most worthy goal in life. The one who is Awareness itself, Sri Ramana Maharshi, said these words about it: For a jiva who is suffering due to dying and taking birth, the most worthy thing to do and to attain with full love, is [to have] the experience of the great state of Jivan-mukta, having subsided and known [its own true nature], so that the rising [of the ego], which is the coming to life [of the jiva] because of [its] forgetting its own reality [Self], may die. The supreme experience [brahmanubhava] - which has the glory of not knowing any other thing - of the great enjoyer of the bliss of true knowledge [meyjnana-maha- anandi], who has attained the state of Silence [mouna], the form of That [tadakara] which shines triumphant on the destruction of oneself [the ego], cannot be conceived by anyone whosoever. @@protey117, namaste! Om Tat Sat is the eternal pranava sound. Om Tat Sat represents the unmanifest and Absolute Reality, PARABRAHMAN. @@ustinovvadim2114, as prana is a vital energy, "pranava sound" should stand for some kind of energetic impulse with a sound equivalent "Om tat sat"? Which corresponds to the biblical concept of logos of God that was it's manifestation in the beginning of the cosmic creation & that simultaneously embodied & identified God.

@@protey117 , namaste! Thank you for the inquiring buddhi and the subtle insight into what lies beyond the mind. The Mandukya Upanishad says: "Om! This sound is all this. Here is its explanation: Past, present, future - all this is the sound Om (Aum). And everything else that is beyond the three times is also the sound Om ... The fourth [state] has no parts - the ineffable, dissolution of the manifested world, bringing happiness, nondual. So the sound Om is the Atman. Whoever knows this, penetrates [with his] Atman into the [higher] Atman. " The Supreme Reality is our eternal search, the perfect ideal and our true essence. We hear about moksha, growth and realisation that we are that we are and that that we are is complete and needs nothing else. So in your lecture you said to live is to grow but... to grow for what if I am complete. I can only think that there was a journey or learning thanks to Kama but now I want to dis-learn as I realise that everything I learned just keep me in this cycle of wanting, craving, suffering. To live is to grow... inwards, letting the outside noise and necessities to vanish as smoke in air. Please comment. Namaste.

Dear sir, your Guru rightly said that the ultimate goal is to leave. I also agree to this answer.but what does it mean? It means to leave this world because this world is not our true Home. This world is a rented house.we would have to leave this world one day as we don't belong to this world. Our real home is somewhere else.we have forgotten our true home .where there is no death,no suffering ,no pain,no birth ,no old age.we remain permanent or everlasting.and there we leave for ever no coming and going.

I think one should focus and practice towards moksha only because kama & ardha causes addiction and one can be easily lost in these. Also one will be lost in the continuous cycle of rebirths in hell, heaven and human realms. Also, if someone has plenty of bad karma from previous existences then he will not be able to attain kama & ardha but he can still target and practice for moksha if he is wise enough and able to see the truth. Also, the pursuit of kama & arhda leads one to do develop -ve karma and hence one gets trapped in -ve states of suffering. Moksha means end of attchment (clinging to pleasures, desires etc...all attachments dropped), ultimate peace and end of suffering. Moksha is opposite of kama & ardha. Moksha is the only goal and moksha is the only true peace.

Pranaam, some questions... 1) 1:00 - 3:00 if dharma, artha, kama, moksha are main growths, then where did each one of them begin among creatures?... if trees do not have them, then at which step of evolution each of them started?... 2) 3:00 if amoeba went towards sugar, and if that can be called kama, then same logic can be applied to all chemical reactions and physical forces like gravity and electricity? earth has kama to revolve around sun? can kama be even called worldly pleasure, aint it just inclinations based on needs or wants? 3) 4:00 I didn't understand much about what you meant by artha, being done lawfully.. what laws applies in pursuit of artha, and are they natural or man made. 4) 6:00 is dharma righteousness? then what are the commanding principles of this righteousness? 5) 8:00 heaven and hell are mentioned in many Indian texts, some say they are part of your own self, and exists in what you go through in current life, and vaguely that which chakras of your body are more active... also, some alien planets and beings are mentioned... which is true, and are both true? 6) 10:00 hungry and homeless is state of most sadhus in India (ancient especially)... when why they didn't pursue artha, kama and went directly to dharma and moksha? this is applicable to life of Adi Shankaracharya as well, and only upon instigation by wife of Mandana Misra that he underwent physical experience to explain what is sex... why he didnt do it before, as part of step of kama? 7) 11:00 if atma is reservoir of happiness, when who experiences this happiness? atma can experience itself? 8) 12:00 if all four paths are to be followed, then how can meditation occur when mind is occupied thinking about so many kama, artha and dharma thoughts and worries? 9) 13:00 what is academic difference between moksha and nirvana. are there levels of moksha and nirvana? why not being born again is such a big deal, what happens to you if you are not born again? do you experience anything or its like a glorified suicide? humbly

Namaste Taugiri plz consider my reply if you want some truth. Tools or scriptures with numbers or names and a language are all like an abacus, or a kid's extra cycle wheels before balancing to cycle or learning to calculate instantaneously. Nature is automatic and needs no literature or scientists or saints. Therefore Dharma, Karma etc., will appear logical or acceptable to a certain level and beyond a certain point it will all draw a total blank. Now hear a secret: A very talented force or a being and its continuous influence, in Tamil we say Vallavan has put up a lock which till date no person has been able to break or open up. This lock of intelligence will keep the people at bay. To open up one needs balance the two levers of the lock viz.. the body and the psychology or mind, how? One by service or action and two by meditation, then aspirant moves into the state of Turiya from here onwards all questions just dissolve. And the key is to remain "restfully alert". IX - To know nature one has to attain nirvana which is to become nature. Moksha has several meanings - going to heaven, merging with God, immortal, never to be born again. Nirvana is more of a Buddhist term. Moksha Sanskrit/Tamil roots. An Avataar is a birth further to Moksha or Nirvana. Avataars are many and therefore many purposes to fulfill in nature. The only glorified suicide we have heard is that of Japanese Harakiri

VIII - You are right, if you meant all four path details are like occupying the mind, then meditation cannot occur. So follow your own path of consciousness and "treat" meditation like breathing. VII - Lolz good question. Ask who is experiencing what? "That" "Paramaatma" happiness is eternal infinite are we in that or not? And the Mind happiness is temporary. Ask, is Aatma sleeping or awake? Ask 'am I the mind or the Aatma? If I am the aatma where is God or Paramatma? Am I awake or lost? Recognized or not?...move to silence and watch your mind play its tricks [golden locks] VI - I don't believe that story is totally correct. Something is missing in the story. Looks like the original life of Shankaracharya has been written with a little Chinese whispers. Best is to move into Turiya state and find out. V - If people think Mooladhara chakra is only at the base of the spine, what can I say? Again language has locked the truth. All i can say is don't search for any chakra, sit and do service or do service [duties] and sit in meditation, all chakras will reveal themselves to you. Chakra is nature's business not that of the mind. So mind your business :-) Reg. heaven/hell you are in the right direction. Yes planets/stars do influence our bodies and our emotions. IV - Consciousness yours and that of the Universe. When they merge you will know what is commanding what III - Artha is reasoning. Some self principle artha may even go against the law. For example Gandhi defying the law to make salt. Again nature has a law for example law of gravity and Artha says if you jump from the top of big building you will hurt yourself badly. Artha recognizes and also ignores to notice willfully. Artha is Artificial intelligence too! II - Plz don't single out Kama [language and the locking trap]. By kama let us say we refer to all emotions including fear/anger/jealous .. have you been in love? if yes you will know what I am saying is truth, cos in Love we experience anger, fear etc., Does an amoeba have kama or does the Sun? Amoeba may divide itself asexually I don't know if that is its type of fapping. See again the language and the mind creating doubts... Let us not mix up nature. Nature has different rules of engagement for living and non living things. Simple common sense. I - If you know about yourself first wrt to "whatever" we call as Dharma, Karma etc., then the knowledge of trees and other creatures and all things will automatically come to you. Don't worry. To answer this would be like trying to open a lock with the wrong key. You will get stumped like Antony Robbins - the famous author of the book - Awaken The giant within. You know what he asks from his billion dollar resort? What is this meditation? huh How to think not to think? Lolzz nuts..even that is thinking right? Yes he is right, But I would tell him to go to the kindergarten class of consciousness where he can use his tools and scriptures and numbers and names... I am free ..Jai Gurudev.................. Pranams to Arsha Bodha Center and Swami Tadatmananda.... #profvkj signing Off...

But once the Moksha is reached what happens? Do we float in eternal bliss of non existence for ever and ever, energy of atman dissolved in the energy of Brahman? Or what?

This is not the purpose of life. This is about HOW to live. The question is why the universe exists and why human consciousness exists.

@Aditya Kumar Pandey Then his question is wrong. Personally, I think there is a meaning, but that we are not looking closely enough. So problem Vedas.

I have a serious issue with the concept of Artha. If someone cannot earn a living for medical reasons or whatever and cannot accumulate 'wealth' in terms of financial means - then what implications does this have? Is the person not entitled to 'grow' in other means and work towards Moksha, liberation, enlightenment, or is the person unworthy of that because he/she cannot earn Artha. I find it a little discriminatory and frightening because you're (Vedanta) essentially saying that disabled people or people unable to work are doomed. Forgive me if sound a little harsh, but it worries me extremely.

artha isn't wealth as in financial wealth ... it is the lack of a direct translation that makes it confusing ... even knowledge, skills ,arts, land, cattle, wealth, equipages and friends is artha . And "artha" also means "meaning/understanding or goal " ...Loosely put it is about material possessions and understanding of them . And it is about finding your dharma , earning the artha of your tendency and completing your kama(desires) and of course all of them righteously so that you can begin your journey to moksha ... If one doesn't full fill any of the earlier three (dharma, artha, kama) his ascent to moksha shall remain unachievable as his atma (soul) keeps going back to the unfulfilled(kama/artha)or unclarified(dharma) .

artha = resource management... so if a person has any disability, they still got to eat... so others can provide if one cant help themselves... its practical, that you need stuff to sustain life (not riches)... arthshastra is how to manage resources well,, not how to accumulate personal wealth... your body is also an artha, tool to be used, resource available

@@ravitejvarma well said,... body seeks artha for survival, kama for progression, dharma for knowing and moksha is the aim

I wonder what he says about renunciation? Jesus and buddha were "homeless" i guess. I think someone could have no money or house and still be happy content etc.
