If you can't upkeep & discard a card, I'm assuming you actually gain a stress (& not "lose" it), & that you lose a happiness pt. right?

Yes anytime you lose a card because you decide to not upkeep or you cant, you gain 1 stress and lose 1 ST happiness (exception getting rid of a job I believe)

My one play of this game, we were slaughtered by the person that didn't pick up a job. A lot of the cards you can grab don't require money.
