100% facts. Push push and push again. You can get away with a lot pushing the bow arm through the shot, 10x more than just a clean release on it's own.

100% agree. My release is definitely not pretty and abnormal, but I’m plenty pleased with how I shoot. A strong bow arm covers a lot of flaws. Secondly, at the end of the day doing it the same way twice is key. Good stuff Jason.

Great advice, hope people don’t dismiss how important that is. Learned that myself through trial and error. I think of it as the bow hand is the king and controls the shot, and the release hand is the servant and be still and not be an over eager helper.

It took me 16 years of serious shooting to discover this principle. After reading Fred Asbell's 2nd book. A certain feeling of being locked, not into a position, but into a directional push, locked into a dynamic alignment, and suddenly my release and follow-through are SPOT ON! It was a real revelation. The front arm dominates the release. Stopped all the problems with punching arrows to the left or yanking them off to the right, stopped my release hand from flying away from my face or up past my eye. You mentioned that 20 yards zone, but this practice of pushing has allowed me longer holds and MUCH better consistency at 35-60 yards (not that I shoot at game that far.) Good shooting, brother, and let me know if you need any help with those hogs.

Most Plains Nations who used the short bow did. I think thats why the short bows developed a bad reputation with many. They tried to draw the string more than push the bow. I realized this years ago watching the few old videos and studying pics of Native people shooting and why the Augmented pinch grip was successful for them. They essentially pushed the nock, from the grip .

You hit the nail on the head, here. I have the same problem with my bow arm and if my shooting goes to heck, it's almost always my bow arm. I know my release is not the greatest and I still use a Hill style heavy glove, pretty much always have. But it's my bow arm anyway, that decides if I make a decent shot or not. I believe I pretty much use the swing draw, but sometimes drift to a more static hold, when shooting a light poundage recurve. But my heavy hunting bows are always shot the way you do, I believe.

Questions: 1) how many inches are you literally pushing forward? 0.5"? 0.75"? 1.0"? 2) Are you strictly straightening your elbow, or are you using other body part? Or are you launching your whole body forward from the waist up? The reason I ask is I'm trying to use Clay Hayes's full body alignment concept where he explains it with popsicle sticks where the bow wrist, elbow, left shoulder and right shoulder form a straight line. When you do that, there isn't anymore body part that can buy you another inch to push forward. That leaves pushing from the waist. Further explanation would be very helpful. Thx

I really do try to do that, but it's extremely difficult because I can't completely lockout either arm from injuries ... had them snapped back hyperextended and now only about 85% of full extension ... I'm 6'5" and only have a 26.5" draw length when it should be about 31" so I really can't afford to bend my bow arm at all. But your tips and video's are always good brother ... thanks for sharing and God bless you!

You can pick up an inch and a half draw increase by using a thumb release. I found every release is clean using the thumb, and I use a Cherokee bend in my bow arm which is an automatic push on release, as well as never having string burn.

I learned to shoot at Y camp from a Cherokee followed by the Archer's Bible, 1968. So yeah, I'm self taught...a lot of mistakes and bad habits but I learned to point with my bow hand and push the release. Personally I ended up sighting with my dominant eye, both eyes open-string and arrow tip as sights but only as an aide to the instinctive shot. So that's how I take this advice, and thanks.

New to the trad bow thing and having a ton of fun!!! Never been more frustrated ever!!! I bought a cheaper recurve off Amazon to start shooting. I’ve got it tuned good so on good shots it shoots darts. However I’m fighting being consistent a bunch. I’ve got it down after two months shooting to being able to hit a 24x24in target every time at 20yds. During my hr long sessions though I will shoot a dozen groups that are inside 6in pie plates but seem to get more groups that are all over the place left right and up down. Having a hard time settling on a solid anchor for some reason!!! Think I’m there most times but arrows flying all over would tell different story. Coming from compound where I could shoot 3in groups out to 50yds this is killin me. I know this is a different ball game and can’t expect miracles but I’d take consistent groups no matter where they hit. I could work with that. One arrow low right next high left next bullseye doesn’t work. Having fun getting frustrated though!!! I have noticed what your talking about in this video though and when I do the push it’s noticeably a better shot!!! Luv your videos they help a bunch.

Won't be long and you will be shooting 3 or 4 inch groups at 15 yards and 5 or6 at 20. Has to be a consistent anchor, have to push either the bow arm, and have to have good follow through. But most of all remeber that 20 yards should be an absolute max hunting distance. Real world hunting should be 15 and in. So being a good shot at say 25 yards is irrelevant in the hunting world. But being nice and tight at 15 is what your looking for in my opinion.
@pathfinder5804
@pathfinder5804 5 ай бұрын
It’s funny to me cuz my anchor while shooting my compound is so rock solid but this trad shooting im having tons of trouble being totally consistent with it. I’ve tried gloves and a couple different tabs. I’ve settled on a Yost predator tab as I like the feel of the solid piece in my palm. I’ve watched all of your videos, Jeff Phillips and some of Tarls from Gunshy and you guys have given me a great base to start from. I’m not instinctive at all so I’m using the arrow as an aim point currently. The big jump shooting for me right now was watching one of “The Push” videos where he explained using a combo of string walking and gap. So I’ve learned that a small crawl down the string has made my point on at 20yds and my 15yds hold about 4in low. Don’t know if that’s how I’m gonna stay but my groups went from actually missing a 24x24 target every few shots to being able to keep it on target 100% of the time. Trying to decide what kinda bow to order as a step up from a beginner Elcheapo since I see it’s clearly something I’m loving!!!! Problem is like my rifles my eye likes short compact stuff and not sure that’s the best thing!!!! I’m looking at Centaur, BigStick and Big Jim Thunderchild. Figure they are all out around a yr wait so order now and by the time it gets to me I should have some stuff figured out shot wise.

I kind of do a Pushing Swing draw where end is a bit of push for my draw as well for my needs to where on all including using no sights on a hunting lever bow should I ever use one or some rare finger draw compounds like some Bowfishing, SAS 1990's models, or Gen--X I have elbow a tad bent down the lane target, Leverbow and sight as I would go more target stance or Compound with a release and sights is different and arm holding bow is nearly 100% straight as weight of either bow like in Compound/lever or weights in target help keep bow steady from vibration. Anyhow, all of my styles micro bent elbow, Swing draw with push helps to draw a heavier bow in 50--55 pounds a several times or 45 pounds more then several times in more traditional hunting or English longbow style setup with no weights and/or vibration devices on bow for vibration dampening.
