Although it's best to have a Chinese language with English subtitles, but I'm still grateful for all of the effort to make this awesome series in English. My Chinese is not bad, but I had to watch this series three times before I could understand it. Ancient Chinese and especially if it's related to politics is very difficult. Thanks a lot for the English sub.

Thank you! Originally, I skipped the first season.. too much reading, and over 50 episodes! Watched S2 Started Season 3. Ive enjoyed it so much then remembered I didn't even get through S1. Now S1 episode 31. My eyesight's getting bad from the subtitles, nonetheless, its Epic. I can now binge, close my eyes, and listen.

another thing, fortunately this drama series are pre-unification. when I watched other Chinese drama related to royal family titles, the English sub got weird still I could understand but when they sub it, it no longer weird., it becomes inapropriate. Imagine "Tai zi" (Crown Prince) is higher in rank than "Wang" (King). Sometimes they stupidly translates "Wang" to Prince. Then when that "Wang" meets a King of other Kingdom the translation becomes messy because Wang is a prince and a king at the same time. If it is a sub, they still can somehow preserve the Chinese culture, a broken translation sometimes better because Chinese is not English so we can still grasp the meaning. In contrast, dubbed meaning they have to change it to English culture which totally destroy the meaning.

Thanks a million, dubbed or subtitles is fine with me. But I prefer subtitles. Watching men in ancient Chinese costumes speaking English is quite disconcerting to me. Somehow I'm into Ancient Chinese History at the moment. Just finished watching Etughrul, Ottoman Empire. Japanese, next.

26:14 the Magistrate said "Elder Prince" but the Chinese ver said "Gong-zi". shouldn't it translated as "Young Lord" instead? 26:29 He said "Your Highness" to Qín Xiàn Gōng ..the Chinese ver. said "Jun-shang" so I think it should be Lord/ruler/Duke or something like that. Well, this drama setting is that before the Chinese unification. After the unification The Highest authority is Huang Di (eq. Emperor) and his son Huang-zi = Imperial Princes) will be appointed as Wang (lit. KING). When promoted as Imperial successor, the King will be titled as Crown Prince. In other word, Imperial Crown Prince is higher in rank than a mere King. Chinese is not English and English is not Chinese. Their hierarchy system is way far different. so the term Your Highness, Your Majesty, Your excellency and so on cannot be applied in Chinese.

The Chinese word “Gong” means Duke, the highest title a warring state lord can have. “Gong zi” means son of Duke or prince, no age is associated with it. The Chinese word “Jun Shang” means Your Majesty. It was how people called their rulers during the warring states period. Although the word “Tian zi” means son of heaven, and is only reserved for the nominal ruler of China of the Zhou dynasty at the time, however warring states are pretty much independent at the time. Last, the title “Huang Di” was a late invention by the first emperor of China, after he united China under direct centralized rule for the first time in the history in 221 BC.

@@wrht919 this is somehow sophisticated. even if Zhou dinasty had been weakened to such condition, the King of Zhou is still legally/ nominally the highest authority right. According to English system (which of course irrelevant here), he was the only one qualified as to be called "His/Your Majesty". the problem was that those Gong and Jun at that time started to shift the fief from just "pricipalities" to independent "states". In Chinese it is "Guo". So according to Zhou dinasty law they were feudal lords. In English the feudal lords are called Your Highness the Prince or Your excellency the Duke. This is very complicated until when the Jun crowned themselves as Wang (simply King). then from that until before Qin Shihuang became emperor, I think they can be called Majesty. Later, after the Unification in many dramas "Wang" is often under-translated with just "prince".

I watched Qin Dynasty epic and absolutely loved it (highly rec it) and now i want to watch these series but can only find it in Chinese without any subs on in this eng dubb with eng subs and its just distracting. much rather prefer to listen to original sound and read captions. Sorry. Can't watch this English dubbed show. Reminds me of the Sword of Destiny with everybody "speaking" English too. Why they did that is beyond me because the original Crouching Tiger, Hidden Dragon in full Mandarin was an international sensation. It would have been better for the show to be in Mandarin with English subtitles.

please, for the benefit for your own and the rest of us, provide original audio + eng subs. you spend much less effort (and can translate more lovely chinese tv shows) and more of us can enjoy. it makes no sense to dub. never dub. the chance of dubbing sounding good is not 0% but it's a very tiny percentage.
