They sent you back to chapter 1 because the doll that Abi picked up and left in the kitchen, would have been used to as decoy to send Cael in freezor. If Abi was to get killed by Emma, you would possible be sent back to where you can prevent Emma getting in infected in the first place.

Emma and Abigail were both fine. Never got Emma bit. I picked up the toy even opened it as Kaitlyn in chapter 10. It’s honestly just a dumb game mechanic but nothing I can do especially with the auto save feature. I’ll get back to this game in the future! Just need a break after this lol

tbh the whole system is kinda arbitrary when it comes to deciding what led to that character being killed. I imagine that if Dylan loosens the ladder and then Abi is killed by Emma cause she can’t make it up the ladder, it sends you all the way back to Dylan, instead of sending you to Emma getting bit right outside the lodge. I still love the mechanic, though.

(Kaylee always dies, but you can choose between Ryan and Laura or Chris and Silas.) You can also kill every single character in the game at once. Short (KINDA) and sweet answer without spoilers (as you stated you stopped playing): Your survivability heightens or lowers whether your state of being changes. In any case, it is still possible to get every counselor out alive. In your state of being, Kaitlyn has 2 ways she can live in this scenario. She needs Abi or Emma (or both) to find her silver shells in the basement to fight and kill Caleb. OR the plushy as a distraction for the freezer to trap Caleb. Either option makes it blatant that it's the correct decision if you have it unlocked. Abi or Emma will say they need to help Kaitlyn. The freezer option turns into "USE DECOY". The reason they sent you to the beginning was because that was the last time in Kaitlyn's current state of being where she could use the freezer and live. If you chose the other option and died, you would've went back to the last time Abi or Emma were well enough to help Kaitlyn in the storm shelter. In that case, this scene never happens and Kaitlyn fights Caleb in the hallway. To answer why they didn't just send you to Emma or Abi in either choice is because that's a trap option, not a confirmed kill option, but in either option he's no longer a threat to anyone for the rest of the night. The game is basically telling you. If you lost the option to kill Caleb, your only other option is if you took the toy from the very beginning lol. But at that point rewinding makes both Emma and Abi alive so that's just salt in the wound lol. The game is unforgiving where other's actions/falters can KILL other characters.

Well... even at that point the game could just send sou back to chapter 9, because she can survive the freezer and Caleb if she was infected at the scrapyard. I mean sure, that's not an intuitive choice and it relies mostly on QTEs so it makes sense for them not to do that, since the player would probably not understand and instinctively try NOT to get her infected. But they could very well show you the ending card explaining why she died, and it would immediately make sense. And yes, you would have to spare Silas, but it's still better than having to replay 7 hours at that point. Now that i think about it, the best option would be to let the player make the choice of how they want to save a character if said character can survive in multiple ways. That would be very nice.

@@semperfi2314 it’s kind of a fun twist on the formula though, that letting Katelyn get infected in Chapter 9 is a super easy way for her to survive - you can bungle pretty much any QTE in chapter 10 and he’ll just scratch her once then run off. Hell, if she gets infected in chapter 9 then drops all of the debris on herself (which would normally kill her) she’ll just crawl out of the pile in the morning, unscathed

@@semperfi2314 That could have worked but that would’ve changed Kaitlyn’s state of being. I stated “that was the last time in Kaitlyn’s state of being where she could survive to the freezer”. If they reverted back to the junkyard chapter then yes she could have survived it but there’s still enough “but what about”s that still warrant going back to the doll. 1. Kaitlyn can still freeze to death even in that second state of being depending on other character’s choices. 2. That was the last time you could get BOTH alive with the freezer option in that state of being. You could still argue “just rewind to the chapters where both can get their state of beings changed” but their endings would then be dependent on another group of character’s actions. I agree that this was a pain and they added a warning that you’re going back multiple chapters now thankfully but this is probably the best way without changing and adding other factors that the player probably wouldn’t have wanted anyway.

Shit I didn't realise there were options that sent you that far back in the story. The farthest I've been sent back was when I made Laura run instead of attack the father to which she punched the electric box then got Jacob killed in the cage room. I thought if I used a life, I'd get sent back to the choice where Laura either runs or attacks the old man but no it made me go back to when Laura and Ryan just entered the cage room which was like 40 minutes of gameplay lost. Still it's not as bad as this.

Strangely, I got Abigail killed in the cellar and I had 1 life left in my rewind yet it didn't kick in and send me back, even though it should send me back to Emma getting bit, not nearly as far as it sent you. Technically the game shouldn't have to send you that far back, it should only need to send you far back enough for Emma and/or Abigail to give you silver shells so you can kill Caleb. Whether that means far back enough for one of them to live to make it there, or far back enough if you forgot to pick the shell up in the cellar and make it up the ladder. Heck, honestly you could even rewind back one chapter and let Kaitlyn get bitten at the scrapyard. When she gets bitten, she's basically safe in the lodge as long as you don't go in the freezer.

They should tell you which chapter it'll send you to. If it would be like 1 chapter back, I'm sure most people might use the save, but if it sends you all the way to the start I doubt anyone would sacrifice all that gameplay for one character. Either that or let you go back to the pivotal part, change your choice, and then return to the section/s that are affected by that choice without having to replay any unaffected storyline. I think this is another game that fell victim to exec rushing because the start of the game is amazing but it really drops in quality by the end, and so many aspects feel unfinished.

Or Chapter Select stays unlocked so you can keep going backwards just not forwards. That way you can fix something without having to beat the game or start all over. Something like that. Having played the game 3 times now, the worst Chapter to sit through is 7 (Laura and Max in jail) just such long cinematics and talking. At least the other chapters I can feel a sense of "running through it", there I'm just forced to sit through it.

You can still save Emma by not killing Chris in Chapter 8, so she would remain infected and wouldn't run into Jacob when he turns. And if you kill Caleb, you would cure her and Jacob. But sparing Chris means you would loose Ryan, Laura and Travis and wouldn't get the option to go after Silas.

There's so very many choices and some of them span from Chapter 1 all the way to Chapter 9 weirdly enough. This game feels like it didn't get the full workover on a lot of things like maybe saying "Using this life will put you back into events in Chapter 1" or some kind of idea when you'll end up going back to. I know a few streamers that saved someone and got booted back a few chapters and almost quit entirely because of it. Just feels like there's a number of things that come to be simply bad game design. There's lots of bells and whistles but none of it really improved the game overall.

If you chose to let Kaitlyn hide in the freezer, the only way she can live is if Dylan is alive and infected at the time she enters the freezer. If so, Caleb won’t kill him because he’s infected and he will open the freezer for Kaitlyn. I’m assuming here that either Dylan died earlier in the game, or you didn’t amputate his hand and he transformed in the scrapyard, leaving nobody to unlock the freezer for Kaitlyn. Technically, you should’ve been able to use the toy as a decoy there if you grabbed it in chapter 1. If you didn’t grab the toy, the next best option would be to fail a QTE at the scrapyard to infect Kaitlyn, then choose to run instead of hide. The only other option I can think of would be to let Max infect Emma in chapter 4, amputate Dylan’s hand in chapter 5, and then let Emma infect Dylan in chapter 8 so he’s there to unlock the freezer for Kaitlyn. My guess is that the game is coded to send you back to specific choices only and not QTEs. Even though you can save Kaitlyn by letting her get infected at the scrapyard, the game doesn’t recognize this as a place to send you because it doesn’t want you to purposely fail a QTE. Same with the next best option, the game won’t send you back to chapter 4 to infect Emma because you would have to fail a QTE. Since Kaitlyn is not infected and Dylan is missing, the only way to survive here is to use the toy as a decoy. If you did grab the toy, then I’m guessing you didn’t find it in the kitchen before the cutscene started. You probably have to open Abi’s bag for the game to register it as an option to save Kaitlyn before entering the cutscene. Since examining Abi’s bag isn’t a choice, it probably thinks you never grabbed it to begin with and sent you back to chapter 1 to take it.

If you collected the toy the first time but didn't check the bag Kaitlyn wouldn't have known it was there. Games like this are very good at giving players an idea of what is happening but makes it tricky to remember that the characters themselves don't.

The way this game is so sensitive honestly makes me mad. Don’t get me wrong the game is structured very well but if anything happens you are always sent back so far, two times I have had something happened to my save because of a small issue and I highly recommend everybody save and make backups because apparently games stopped doing that for a while. (which it never hurt for games to have automatic backup saves!)

It's easy to lock in kaitlyn's death early on by not picking up the doll, killing abi and killing/infecting Emma as soon as possible. It is possible to survive if she gets infected in the scrap yard but if Dylan is dead and you go into the freezer kaitlyn and caleb will die anyway. I think it took you back to the doll option because she died in the freezer and without Dylan and and being infected you would need the doll to survive

So what actually happens is whether or not you break the door down to get your stuff in the very beginning. Emma and Abi go to the cabin to break in. While playing as Abi you say no and you don't break down the door. Later on this causes a distraction when Dylan and kaitlyn and everyone break into the cabin, draws the werewolves to them, Dylan and Ryan are able to use the radio without the wires getting fucked up and dylans hand getting lobbed off. But to fix this part you have to run earlier and keep running. You don't hide with kaitlyn.

The reason why is because you need the toy so Kaitlyn can throw it into the freezer to lure Werewolf Caleb so she can close the door locking him inside and keeping Kaitlyn alive.

I thought the same thing but there are choices that impact many sections. In this case by picking up the toy it means breaking into the cabin. When Ryan and Dylan are in the radio shack, Kaitlyn, Abi and Nick need to hide in the cabin and that plays out differently based on the choice of breaking in as Abi at the start.

Simple thing: Notice it sends you right back at the spot OF PATH CHOSEN and you still fucked up CHOOSING THE SAME CHOICE LIKE H2ODELIRIOUS GOT EMMA KILLED WITH THE TRAP DOOR? Its because this choices influenced the finale, without it you died, obviously the game reset you back here to fix it if you remember your choices ;)

I got Dylan killed twice because I had the choice to run or fight. I chose fight and I I guess I didn’t shoot the wolf right so when I used my death rewind it just brought me right back to having to fight instead of the running choice & he died again 😂

I recently bought this game and I'm done with Until Dawn and just trying to collect trophies but this one look much difficult with the consequences than Until Dawn so I guess more characters will die on my playthrough. I only have 1 death(not counting Josh) in my Until Dawn Playthrough.

@@magicvigor484 that's really sad, the devs should have tested the revive mechanics more, it's not good to send the player way back to the beginning chapters(when they are near the end) . I hope they fix it or make a patch like when you change your actions in past it returns you to the beginning of the sequence where you died (like the beginning of the chase or to the point where the wrong option was chosen which led to the death of that particular character)

@@avi1739 It's not that simple as some choices impact more than one section of the game. Collecting that doll is made after a choice to break into that cabin which has it's own impacts later on. I am sure it could be done to only replay the segments that are altered but even so you would end up replaying many segments anyway because of how many things connect.

I honestly don’t know. Sadly I already had the toy and even opened it in the kitchen before this scene. Sending me back really didn’t make sense gameplay wise. They should of just let me go through that decision making again. I got Dylan killed because I didn’t have the silver bullet so I used a life just to get put into that scene again just for him to die.

So the game sends you back to the start to save Kaitlyn if you don’t take the toy or have Emma/Abigail alive to make bullets right. But you can also get Kaitlyn infected late game, I believe in the scrapyard, which makes it possible for her to survive her encounter with Caleb in the lodge. Odd choice by the devs to not acknowledge this route as a possibility for saving her.

I don’t think it’s that odd. I assume those two choices (toy and silver bullets) are the only options which as well as not dying, don’t get Kaitlyn infected either. I think that’s what they were going for, and I don’t think it’s odd to think that. But the infected option is technically an option.

My guess is that you need to fail QTE to make Kaitlyn infected and the game doesn't recognize QTE as a choice

@@momijikun4263 I would say so. Especially since there is only one time the player themselves can make a choice to get infected and that is with Dylan. All other infections as far as I know are failed QTE's and so the game itself wouldn't acknowledge "failures" as a conscious choice. Which itself is actually an interesting concept and one that is drilled into the players mind from the get go. What doesn't kill you...

The game should probably tell you how far back it will rewind you before you make the choice to use death rewind. I don't think there's anything unfair about the game realizing that the choices you made lead to Kaitlyn needing the plushy from chapter 1 to survive, therefor rewinding to chapter 1. But I do think its unfair of the game to send you all the way back to chapter 1 without a warning.
