So this definitely looks like an issue that deserves attention - a weapon that became a victim of it's past circumstances on release. Perhaps comp people should look into it more seriously, or perhaps not. That is actually for them to decide(and Soter Dave is part of that community, obviously), but anyone who only plays pubs would be biased and unfair on trying to affect something they dont play, and could easily ruin something that took time to build. Thats the thing i want to point out about this video to anyone who only plays pubs. While it does look like the video itself is fair, but the comments seem to be way too happily smacking the competitive community, like they're some exclusionary tyrants that only gotten skilled from being insecure about themselves. I've seen this in other games (tf2) and it'll probably be the same thing all over again. But make no mistake, its easy to hate on comp community, actually way too easy. Especially in a niche game, an even more niche way to play it means its a very low number of people, so its very very easy to hurt it. Thus people who try to hurt it, only do it because they sense weakness and an easy prey, not because they're "gigachads rejecting vanity". In my opinion, people who only want to play against someone who's as good as them or better, only deserve commendation, its the way games are naturally meant to be played. Not in a pub stomp environment, where u "play with your food", while everyone else has less in-game time than you. Even if devs built the game around monetizing something like that. Like sure, the comp community is going to have more toxicity on average, because people genuinely put effort into playing, and that's simply what happens when u put effort. Its going to have bickering and disagreements, like any genuine community, but IT IS a community. They will vote on things, organize and try to reach consensus. You can't actually say the same about an average person in a pub community, because its just a mass of people who come and go, act on instinct, horde mentality etc. If this wasnt the case, then the devs would have gotten way more pressure from the playerbase over the last year or 2 to get their sh** together.

A perfect comment! Surprisingly after posting this video I'm getting reports that the quarterstaff special attack can still be desynced, so if that is true the competitive community is further validated. And as you explained, any exclusion was made in a fair system that took into account what the competitive players actually wanted. Quarterstaff is the only weapon that has ever been banned, and while that is unfortunate, it is only the result of issues that are out of the competitive community's control. As for the so called 'elitism' it simply doesn't exist. Of course some players could be considered elitist, but the overwhelming majority of the competitive community is simply trying to improve so they can beat each other. And they're extremely welcoming to new members. Almost all clans openly coach people for FREE. I don't even do that, I'm a greedy dude! (metafy.gg/@dave)

Always been a fan of the quarterstaff for aesthetic reasons in past games. I've been using this weapon quite a bit in Chivalry since it's release, and continue to use it post nerf and animation fixes. It is not a top tier weapon by any stretch, but I've always liked the defensive nature of it. Sure, the animations are tricky to someone who isn't use to fighting it, but I find it hypocritical that the top tier players take offense to "twisting" animations when they do everything in their power to disguise every swing they throw out with any weapon they use. Talking to you invisibly fast great sword overheads, and longswords in general. Some of the current animation manipulation is bordering on the depravity Chivalry 1 was popular for. Let's overhead to alt overhead look down insta-hit until someone runs out of stamina and call that okay, but god forbid you hit someone with a hard to read quarterstaff slash with almost zero range and meh damage. The paddy cake stamina attrition game is where it's at. Whatever you do don't catch someone with timing, they might call ban. There's no reason whatsoever this weapon should be banned anymore in any context, other than the fact those in their ivory tower deem it different than what they're used to.

In my clan we just started to enter comp play on a serious level and Personally being a lower-tier player I’ve been seeking out others in my clan to help me improve my quarterstaff gameplay. The player numbers are extremely low but the skill ceiling of this weapon is a unclimbed mountain. The pure jumps in range and twisting nature of the weapon in general is a low impact but highly versatile tool that punishes overused of your stamina bar perfectly. The punishment of over input of attacks in the competitive in a defense supporting role is perfect on TO’s, holding a line is just a lacking ability of the weapon and the damage makes headhunting difficult but that’s neither of your genuine strong suits despite being a up close and personal weapon. Run the gauntlet on pimp slaps while your friends hold line, be a flea of pester while using your high health bar and close range attacks and then run the tunnel by watching the line’s back or defend an attacking flank. I feel this is a weapon to be utilized for its many unique play options not it’s power alone. The difference in the range for each attack is so diverse and incremental that there’s no true range or total disadvantage and that alone makes you a tough approach to lean into. Not only that but your low damage compared to other weapons will make enemies far more willing to try breaching that gap hoping to beat you out on punishments but a high tier player that just won’t work on the way it tends to. To me the quarterstaff is the best weapon to make you a walking wall. Shield disarmament and tanking those blows is great for outlast but honestly not for drawing attention. Due to the defensive nature of the quarter in combination with its stamina abilities, it’s slow paced gameplay, and quick light attacks/precision pokes makes running through a crowed pilling agro on people not only a breeze but a defendable position no matter the situation. While it’s fights are limited in weight it’s not in scope, This stick does as a stick and without metal is just gonna be an uphill battle. Your inability to read the quarter player is a skill issue, Unban him for life

I was randomly playing some games with Crusader and decided to run about with the QS. I gotta say it’s very niche but it still performs well enough in other categories, while also having a nice flow to how the weapon deals it’s damage. The special can throw off people and while not doing much dmg it can hit lots of people, deal good stam damage, and has range. I really think comp players should give it a chance, maybe TB can put it on the Man at Arms as well sometime and that might pique more players’ interests. It does feel a tad odd on Crusader but I’m feeling it!

one thing that could also be noted is from what I gather a lot of the competitive scene has many of The Old Guard from Chiv 1, and the quarterstaff in THAT GAME was an even scarier monster to face iirc. could just be straight stubborness that they just don't ever want to see it in their little corner of the game

I use it often now, because I ran out of weapons to try. It's too damn fun, people still don't know how to react to it. The overhead is great for tapping heads in 1vX and punishing people with the insanely fast side to side.

In CTO, I believe atm it isn't valid, in duels...now there it could be interesting to give it 1 chance. What is there to lose ? Maybe some fear of dying by a stick but they shouldn't. Finally ,yes Missing happens quite a lot... It is quite the difficult weapon to play if you re not in a duel, and even... weird stab, short but fast slashes, cool and readable overhead... low damage special. A difficult weapon to master with its lack of stability, difficult to play against and a big dose of weirdness. Sad though because, as a Qstaff, maybe it is one of these weapons that could really be unique with different types of attacks since irl it depends how and where you put your hands (especially slashes and stabs, overhead too)

I think the insane stamina is the main reason why the competitive community banned it. It was extremely OP in duels when it came out due to it's nearly unlimited stamina. You could literally just sit there and block riposte indefinitely and never run out of stamina.

Hmm. Interesting. Well, if you see attacks that are faster than they normally are, that's a pretty good sign. Movement speed is also another popular form of cheating. So mainly pay attention to movement speed and attack speed.

@@SoterDave well, thats obvious hacks, but i encountered other types, it was kind of hard to say for sure due to mty lack of experience, but some people seems to be almost invincible, even when i fought 1vX and i was 100% sure that my riposte gona land and deal dmg it just dont... and no matter how hard i try to feint or try to trick them and even play with distancing i was not able to get through their defense of such, they also has like 30+ kills and 1-5 deathes during whole matches while playing only melee. People in chat were saying that its probably auto parry/auto hit cheats, but i dont like to judge other just bcuz i am bad... thats why i tried to look for a video that will explain cheaters behaviors and may be how to jebait them to do something that will prove that they are cheaters idk...

I know nothing about the competitive scene, but I find it kind of hypocritical that they banned use of the weapon for it's animations while also calling it mediocre lol Seriously- one of the best overheads and special attacks, nearly the fastest slash attack in the game (on a _hitstop_ weapon), stamina benefits making it the best _shield_ in the game, and it has more class than Messer. The only thing holding it back is that it's locked to Knight, which, might just be to limit it's power tbh

Unfortunately to make the gameplay more fun the attack speeds are a little unrealistically slow.

You missed talking about the amount of stamina drain negation a player has when using quarterstaff. When it first dropped, a player could simply riposte everything against most weapons. This meant you couldn't bait out early counters and, due to the speed and animations of attacks, couldn't accel through quarterstaff attacks predictably. Against someone with the quarterstaff who simply knows how to riposte, only counter when there is no risk, and not fall for kicks; they were unbeatable. Perhaps it was possible to distance gamble a quarterstaff user but the quarterstaff user didn't need to counter so prob not. It deserved the ban.

The stamina negation was not imperative to its ban as both the Heavy Mace and Pole Axe were both allowed in competitive play, and they had equivalent stamina drain negation while having much better offense. Overall, the special desync was the main reason it was banned.

@@SoterDave The stamina drain negation was extremely important to the depth of the hatred of the weapon, and having infinite stam on riposte is an explicitly literally broken attribute to surpass the special desyncs. That's why it being nerfed to about the level of heavy mace and poleaxe for stam negation was done, yet it was also overdone which is why my thread about qs being obsoleted by heavy mace in its current state exists. Of course it can hold block for longer, but that's of limited use when the weapon has such limited range and simply struggles to participate in combat against longer weapons.

Believe it or not a solid wooden staff that size can kill people and dent armor. Especially if you swing it while holding closer to the end, you can generate a ton of force

Wood clubs and staffs were used all the time historically for fighting armored opponents, both by peasants and poor soldiers, but also sometimes better-equipped ones who didn't have a better answer to armor, and would sheath their swords in favor of a large stick.

qstaff is banned in tournaments, thats why you dont see it in the competitive stuff, mostly due to the fact you can desync the special
