Correspondent Tracy Smith traces the history of the Queen Mary, one of the grandest of ocean liners -- from its place in the hearts of those who sailed her, to its illustrative wartime service.

I had no idea of the Queen's speed. Quite impressive. These grand, opulent liners have been replaced with floating casino's. A repugnant insult to a once grand way to travel.

Her 'offspring', Queen Elizabeth 2 and Queen Mary 2, are some of the most legendary ships, themselves. They're all such incredible floating palaces. Oh and let's not forget the original Queen Elizabeth, Queen Mary's younger sister!

There have been many great ships over the years, and this one's still-surviving owners, Cunard, are mad lucky to have owned most of them. Along with her fleet-mate the Queen Elizabeth, the Queen Mary is one of the most famous liners in the world. So it's a real privilege that she's still around today. Now if only she can be restored to her former condition. Who knows: maybe whatever hauntings that may be still within her will leave...

Despite the fact that you posted this query 4 years ago, I'll still answer. It has been planned by a couple of cruise line companies to actually return USS United States to service, the costs would be considerably higher than building a brand new ships. Out of fear that they'd never make a profit considering the restoration costs, the plans were scrapped. The companies were NCL and Crystal cruises.

The reason it says a salute to a queen is because she is falling apart from her former glory. The engine room is now keen to flooding and if nothing is done between the next 5-10 years she will most likely sink. Long Beach is now looking for the millions of dollars it will take to repair queen Mary,so don't panic all of u Long Beach people they will get it sorted as soon as they can.
@darthplagueis18844 жыл бұрын
Evan Smith lol sink? She is sitting on the bottom of the lagoon she sits in. Sure maybe her boiler rooms will flood but she is again steadily lying on the bottom and is still watertight. The engine rooms will most likely stay in tact.

The Queen Mary (originally intended to be named after Queen Elizabeth, but when Cunard told the King and the Queen Consort, Mary, they wanted to name the ship after England's greatest queen, Mary stepped forward and said she would be delighted. How embarrassing) was built in Glasgow, Scotland, where my Grandmother was born and raised. My Grandparents immigrated to the U.S. and settled in Brooklyn, New York, where my dad and his little sister were born and raised. During the war, when the Queen Mary was painted gray, when she would come into the New York Harbor, the kids in school would run to the window to see her sail by. My dad remembers that. So, I called my parents one day and told them to guess where I was. My dad said, You're on the Queen Mary. And, I said, Yes, but WHERE on the Queen Mary? Of course, my parents didn't know, and so I said, "In the QUEEN MARY SUITE! We were upgraded!" My friend and I checked in late because we attended a concert in Hollywood, and so a young woman who worked at the front desk took us on a private tour, which included the First Class Swimming Pool where I saw and felt the infamous baby footprints on the tile floor that appear to be coming out of the deep end, and meander toward the dressing rooms, where they disappear. I walked into the dressing room, turned left, took 5 to 9 steps, and abruptly stopped, paused, spun around on my heel, and walked in the opposite direction, passing the doorway where I had just entered, and continued several feet and then turned right to step into a dressing room, turned to face outward where I could see my friend and our guide standing just a couple of feet away. I was in there a few seconds - perhaps 10 seconds, max, when I took one giant step forward and out. I immediately inhaled audibly and deeply for that first breath of air and quickly caught my breath. Immediately, our guide asked, very excitedly, What happened? Why did you turn that way, change your mind, and end up walking into this changing room? I said that I had no idea why. I wasn't thinking about what I was doing, it was just happening, and I was just as surprised at my own actions. She asked what happened when I stepped inside, and if it was a portal? I said I didn't know about a “portal”, but I felt pressure on every square inch of my body, pressing inward, and I also felt a sensation of a lot of people (spirits, not tangible people) rushing past me, headed in both directions, and swirling around me. I told her I realized that I wasn't breathing, which is the only time I felt even a little bit alarmed, and I told myself I had to step out, and with a little effort I was able to take a giant step forward and out. Our guide told me that many psychics had been on the ship and that some said the changing room I entered was a portal to the other side. I told her that I am not psychic, but I would admit to being intuitive at times, but I had no answers regarding that experience. After our guided tour, our guide told us how to get into parts of the ship not on any tour, and after a few drinks, we headed out. We walked through a room that had no light source at all, and we merely used BIC lighters to make it across the room and out the other side. Looking back into the room, we could see our footprints walking through a thick layer of dust. No one had been in that room in decades. We also found a workshop where it appeared to be a place where they could repair furniture and such. I will say this. At no time were we ever scared. And, yes, the Queen Mary is “haunted”, but not by anything negative or dark or harmful. There is some sadness there, but for the most part, spirits on board are there because they love the ship, not because they are trapped and destined to relive anything traumatic and deadly that had transpired there long ago.

The Germans actually did hit Queen Mary with a torpedo. A dent was found in her hull after the war when she was being returned to being a liner.
@multirichard0076 жыл бұрын
A dent in the hull could have been docking damage. With 136 independent water-tight compartments, only a multiple of torpedo strikes would have stood any chance of stopping her. She was one of the safest ways to travel the world in the war, and could easily have survived a single torpedo hit. Even a hit in one of the engine rooms would have been unlikely to stop her as there were 2 engine rooms. And if the lookouts had seen the torpedo in time, she could have turned away and out-run it. She truly was the Queen of the sea, and there will never be another like her.

@anthonynelson91364 жыл бұрын
The Queen Mary's hull is still sound. The rocks are there to keep her from slamming up against the dock in bad weather. She isn't as big of a tourist attraction as she once was so the city of Long Beach is talking about selling her to Japan. If the deal goes through she will be towed across the ocean to its new home. My wife and I have sleep aboard her in the hotel and also been inside the Spruce Gosse which was right next door to the Queen Mary until 1992. Both tours were excellent. I would recommend anyone who is going to be in the Los Angeles area to take the tour of the Queen Mary before she is gone.

So if the us bought the ship why don't they fix it
@jgdforesthills16 жыл бұрын
Biggest mistake by Long Beach to classify the ship as a building. The conversion was a big mistake and disaster. Now the Queen Mary has no watertight compartments or doors to protect the ship from completely sinking due to the rust and corrosion. By gutting four of the ships six engine rooms, it affected her stability; the bilge pumps do not work to prevent flooding. A group of well intention-ed people didn't know what the heck they were doing to this once regal and wonderful ocean liner. The Queen Mary should have been dry docked every few years to clean and repaint her hull. The ship should have been preserved as she was and kept up. Her four once mighty engine rooms which gave her the Hales trophy would have been a great attraction for tourists but were gutted to make way for attractions that were a dismal failure. Now we may lose our precious QM due to incompetence, poor planning and just plain greed by the people who operated her.
@stevefranklin80526 жыл бұрын
jgdforesthills1 ship is undergoing extensive repairs right now. Also she is completely repainted now.
