The Queen Mother travels by a horse driven old coach with her grandson, Price charles to Backingham Palace. It is said that at the time of her 90th birthday celebration the Queen Mother actually walked the distance.

I’m nearly 21 and i still wore heels after my illness and that amazed Wales a lot. I was able to hold onto things if I felt uncomfortable but i kept beside Mummy, Princess of Wales most of the time. 5 months on and I walk independently now

As an American, I can say that the vast majority of Americans admired the Queen Mother and admire the Queen. We also are proud of our British Heritage. The term "Blood is thicker than water" came from an American Naval Commander who saw a British warship under attack off the coast of China over a hundred years ago. The American vessel joined the British in their fight against the Chinese, hence the term. It was true then it is true today. "Blood is thicker than water".

As an American, we are fascinated with the royal family as in a distant way, it is a part of our heritage. The USA is a child of GB, for sure. I think those who would deny it do so simply because they feel it is condescending to be called a "child," which is silly. One of the greatest Western powers gave existence to another of the greatest Western powers, leading to an eventual alliance to be reckoned with; that's something to be very proud of on both sides, I say.

Dimbleby makes the comment about Diana not being the first member of the royal family to have the common touch, that the Queen Mother, when she was Queen Elizabeth, superseded her. Starkey pompously confirms and qualifies this by saying the QM did it solely for the good of the RF. This may be so, but when Diana first became Princess of Wales she also did the walkabouts and mingled with the crowds with the same purpose. However, Diana (even before her marriage to Charles) became a media sensation and there was always a frenzy by them in order to get a photograph of her. This put Charles into the shadows and caused huge resentment and consternation within the RF. The QM never outshone her husband King George VI and she was always seen as an asset. I think this in part was due to his inherent shyness, so he may have even welcomed her taking the limelight somewhat. It’s just occurred to me that the media initially dubbed Diana “Shy Di” and yet she ironically dominated the world (as a star-like ‘celebrity’) in her lifetime, and has become an iconic figure since her death.

@TheRadioVenus Your sovereign and ours had to stand side by side in 1974(?) which must have caused quite a controversy in England. Not only that, our sovereign was restored to the Order of the Garter by the grace of the Queen, which must have caused quite an uproar. What was the publicity like at the time? I am curious.

@TheRadioVenus It is probably because the vast majority of people in Britain were unaware of the significance attached to the Order of the Garter. I thought many would know, therefore would resent, but that was not the case. The USA is a child of Great Britain. No matter how they deny this, but it is a plain fact. One has to admit and admire the old order and its glory. I hope more people of Britain will see the benefit of having the Royal Family.

@TheRadioVenus We have had mass democracy for some years now, and many of us are beginning to see their shortcomings as well as its benefits. Mass democracy can be more self degrading than absolute monarchy as the election systems can be quite self-serving. Many countries need to cut deficits but the system makes it hard. Sometimes mass democracy merely serve as a big mechanism to justify bad policies. Monarchy is the only body which can serve as the mother to the state.

There is no parallel here in the States to the royal family's bringing to the fore charities which help people, with the possible exception of Warren Buffet and Bill and Melinda Gates. Kudos to the British people for resisting the insistent republicans who would cast them out.

The idea that the USA should rejoin with Britain is over 120 years old. i have a copy of a painting that must be over 120 years old that shows Uncle Sam shaking hands with John Bull, Lady Liberty with Britannia, and the American eagle with the British lion, together with various arguments to reunite. The idea is tempting but I don't think it could work. It's enough to be the closest of allies.

@tnakai1971jp Despite what some may read in the press, certainly the vast majority of people in the UK love and revere the Royal Family, and do appreciate all the advantages of "The Firm". The Royal Family is there forever. I am from the UK and now live in the USA, and the Americans really are in love with all things UK and generally do appreciate their heritage - and are proud to be 'a child of Gt Britain' as you put it!!
