I'm so glad your video popped up in my suggestions. I'm an older American Whovian (since around the late-1970s). Back then, only weird (read also: queer) people were extremely into the show, so the subtext was there if you caught the vibe. Thanks for your vibrant delivery and editing. See the hate within you? Somebody dares to disagree and you brand them a 'homophobe' - disgusting. Just accept Classic Who contains no gay element whatsoever and save your pathetic, made up words of insult for the REAL homophobes who I gather, will cause you more distress than challenging your nonsensical interpretation of Classic Who...

Great video, thank you for making it! Writing the comment for this "algorithm" guy. As an asexual, I personally always found comfort in "Doctor Who" (both oldschool, nuwho, nu-nuwho and all). Doctor is always a character who is, if not always asexual, at least very ace-coded (even in their romance, because in romance they are more demisexual then heterosexual, I'm thinking about 10th and Rose or 11/12 with River and/or 13th and Yaz), so... That video was basically perfect imo lol

Thanks for this video! Oh God, the memories that come flooding back. I had been connected creatively to the series for a year when John Nathan-Turner took over and I did the first US interviews with him and Peter Davison. We were definitely trying to see what we could get away with under the radar. Being the first Trans person (at least as far a JNT knew) to create material for the series, I was always trying slip some representation in there. JNT felt he could get away with certain things if they had 'camp' camouflage but he had an annoying tendency to go a little too campy for the show's own good. I had numerous arguments with him over that. Eventually, it led to me pulling away a bit during the last two seasons, resulting in my having less direct influence on the series. A lot of what I said must have gotten through because a number of changes made during that time, particularly in the last series, were things we'd argued about since he took over the show. I still think that had BBC let the series continue, it would have built upon those successes and the domestic viewing figures would have gone up. Having said that, I think the decision to it a rest was ultimately the right thing to do. I don't think we could have gotten the series to where it was during the David Tennant/Matt Smith run if the series had kept running that whole time. Looking at the most recent series, it feels like RTD² is almost doing a soft reboot of his own first series from 2005. There are a lot of elements from the Eccleston series that seem to be showing up over the course of this series. I mean, could Rogue be a more blatant copy of Captain Jack? Anyway, sorry for the length but a really great video! Looking forward to more!

That's very interesting to hear. Actually I'd like to know more, I am working on a bigger Doctor Who project and I am very, VERY interested on any behind the scenes anecdotes, specially regarding things like queer representation and politics. With all its faults, the JNT era is one of the most interesting ones, probably because of all the hardships endured. Could I have contact information for a brief interview if all is alright?

Jon being asexual still is queer representation, but he'd been referred to as a "dandy" by the First Doctor as well. Either way, his flourish IS unmistakable. I'm glad to find your channel and your narration is as velvety as it is witty.

Suerte! KZbin recommended this to me despite my not watching much Spanish stuff. Please put trigger warnings if you are going to show pictures of Margaret Thatcher again, though these pictures caught her pleasant side. Jon Pertwee went to a public school, served in the Navy and was a prolific actor on stage and screen. He almost certainly knew of gay practices even if he had not indulged. His flamboyant dress as the Dr was inspired by the sexual ambiguity (compared to the fashion codes of the 1950s) shown by many musicians and other culture icons from the psychedelic bands of the '60s to Bowie and Bolan. The story of Turing ending himself is a common one but not the best interpretation of the facts. He was experimenting with electroplating and was notorious for being a bit sloppy - he seems to have accidentally poisoned himself. The coroner hated gays and assumed that any decent man would prefer death to living as a gay. Alan Garner's well-written tale paints Turing as a victim, which he almost certainly was not. Garner was not there around the time of Turing's end. Jack Copeland is the Director of the Turing Archive for the History of Computing and tells a very different story. The famous photo of Turing looking glum that is always used to illustrate articles is one of a set - some of which show him laughing.

I vehemently disagree with the premise that an intellectual empathetic hero who isn't driven by libido is definitionally effeminate or non heterosexual. To assert this position is to crudely demean by association all males and heterosexuals - we aren't all ignorant brutes, just as women and non straight people aren't all intellectual living saints. In addition, most traditional heroic characters realise they have more important things to do than indulge their own feelings. This is part of what makes them heroic. I'm roughly Davies' age and he's right that there came a time in childhood when Dr Who became a secret pleasure. But it was because it was regarded as childish at a time when you were supposed to be starting to put away childish things and had nothing to do with felt or perceived sexual identity. You'd be called a baby not erm, well take your pick in any language. I think it's more to do with the fact that people nowadays have more licence to remain childlike into adulthood than before, regardless of orientation or anything else. Of course many people involved in the show have been gay - a lot of people in entertainment always have been. But the conception of Dr Who was iconoclastic generally and morally educational entertainment for children that was so challenging and charming that it went on to appeal to a lot of parents as well. Some of the characters were camp simply because fantastical characters realised on a shoestring budget are. It was always supposed to be scary but not traumatising to a child although that was a line that they always flirted with. I for one had a few nightmares about shop mannequins and huge talking spiders... Bienvenido al anglosfera. No todos somos tontos fanaticos aqui. Sombre sexualidad o lengua.
