I'm gay and I have no affinity with "queerness". None. I have no interest in forcing people to "accept" me. Frankly, my sexuality is one of the least interesting things about me and not remotely the defining characteristic of my identity, personality or life. My dream scenario is "don't ask, don't tell." It's no one's business and I would rather just be left alone. To me, real 'diversity' and tolerance is when you can see each person as an individual, which is the antithesis of queerness.

Recently my mum asked me what queer actually is, and I think I said oh don’t even ask. If I’m right in my observations though, whereas a typical gay person just happens to be gay, and can just get on with their life, a “queer” person has to tell the world about it, show it in some manner or other almost constantly, and constantly seek attention, even when they know that attention might be negative, but attention please at all costs!

@BodyOpt that's a pretty fair definition, yep! The gay voice, the gay walk and exaggerated mannerisms, the (often) uber-left politics, weird clothing, odd piercings, unnatural hair colors, often vegan or some other "alternative" lifestyle choices, and generally annoying AF. Some "queers", especially girls, seem to adopt this weirdness to make themselves seem "more interesting" 🙄 I don't get it, myself. I don't understand why anyone would want to be considered "queer". The LGBTQIA+ "community" really isn't something I identify with. Technically I'm a member, yay, but most of them would label me as homophobic. I'm not, obviously, I'm just weirdo-phobic. I find all those common "queer" traits a massive turn-off. I'm only into "regular guys". The term used to be "straight acting", which is very much frowned upon these days. Years ago you could use terms like that on dating profiles and so on, but it's kinda been outlawed these days 🙄

Yep, same here. The word "Queer" will always be a slur to me, and I feel nothing but disdain when I hear folk describing themselves as such. It's a label and it's part of this modern fixation with victimhood - if you're Queer, you can be a victim, and that's somehow trendy. Going round declaring that everything is Transphobic, "men can have a vagina" and using "They / Them" pronouns is NOT the behaviour of a rational, well-adjusted, sentient human being.

Ditto. And the word, 'Queer' used to be a term of abuse. Now it's a badge of 'honour.' All we older gays wanted was equality under the law...and we got it! Many of us are eternally grateful for that and just want to be left to get on with the mundane processes that are ordinary, everyday life. I have never been and never will be a member of the 'alphabet' brigade. I see the LGBTQIA+ lot and I want to run a mile in the opposite direction.

He’s right. My son attends a local Grammar school and was told in class by one of his tutors that gay pride month was more important than Armistice day. When one of the pupils argued back that it wasn’t, the teacher called him a bigot. Perspective is really important here,,, for many of us older guys queer was a word used horrifically to bully us in our youth. Many of us have never understood the LGB people of today adopting a word that means odd, perculiar or strange. Note I say LGB because again many of us were opposed to have T or any of the other letters added. The main reason for this is simple, to be LGB is to largely find ones own gender attractive,, T and many of the others is a crisis of identity- totally different constructs. The recent 5 plus years of utter lunacy has undone much of the ground gathered by early LGB people. It would seem the aim of intergration and to be seen as the same as anyone else has gone and in its place the drive to be as outragous, ridiculous, narsacicstic, needy and entitled as possible has taken its place. Frankly I am ashamed as to where society currently finds itself. Thankfully many of us have realised the need NOT to be defined by any label other than human,, and as a human we simply strive to be the best we can. In the meantime while the narcasists catch up with that ideaology society as a whole is expected to deal with fall out from their selfish actions.

I agree with a lot of what James is saying; the problem is that in a society that has largely abandoned religion, there are no longer any anchors, so anything goes as long as it's consensual (and if that example of sex with drugged and unconscious people is anything to go by, not even that is a barrier now). The late and IMO great Ray Billington once said he thought it was unlikely that society would ever accept necrophilia. I'd like to think he was right but frankly at this rate I'm not sure.

The problem social conservatives have is they aren’t the best at influencing others with speech, and they are nearly as bad as the climate change crowd when it comes to over stating consequences of things. The gay community won marriage because they stopped being jerks and started making good calm arguments. The social conservatives could have won by agreeing that some of the treatment really was unfair to gays, and by trying to protect the sanctity of marriage instead of protecting the status quo in whole. That status quo had many bad elements that needed tossing anyways like employer provided health insurance.

Some strange part of me was deeply pleased and satisfied to see someone’s heart torn over this… And every time the words rightly judging the behavior for what it is were added, there was a pang of the same satisfaction. Be not mistaken… This situation breaks my heart also. Society is tearing lives apart in the name of “virtue” and “love.” The only reason this brought me some comfort was simple: This is the proper response, and it is a depressingly rare one. Amidst the abyss of our modern world, seeing the right reaction is like cold water in the desert. Better to not be in the desert, and sorry for those in it also - but grateful for the water all the same; and newly hopeful that it will not be the last drink.

I was volunteering with an LGBTIQ+ organisation and was asked about my sexuality. Personally I just say I'm antisocial and a "spinster" since I'm an unmarried, unattached woman. I have little interest in dating and marriage. But the label typically applied to me is aromantic and asexual. So I just said "I don't really want to give myself a label, but probably closest to asexual." And she replied "oh yeah, I'm asexual and polyamorous, gender queer and grey-romantic" plus some other things and I walked away thinking "WTF? How can you identify as asexual and polyamorous at the same time THEY ARE OPPOSITES!" I think its mostly people want to feel special and unique but don't have a personality, so they overthink their sexual preferences and make that front and centre in their lives.

"Spinster" wasn't always derogatory. It originally meant a woman who earned her living by spinning yarn, to make cloth. But it t eventually did aquire a pejorative meaning, of a woman who'd never married because she was so unattractive, no man wanted to marry her. Correct. Everyone was ok with Domestic Partnerships, but redefining traditional marriage and forcing everyone to accept that was totally wrong.
