In homers Iliad, Zeus had to intervene Achilles's rage because they feared, that that alone can elude fate, and Troy isnt meant to fall yet. He killed hector knowing he would die after that, all for Patroclus. And people think Patroclus' relevance is just when he died, if he wasnt relevant in the whole 18 years that they have been together, Achilles wont do such thing :)
@thepoorsquire92943 жыл бұрын
Overly enthusiastic Achilles stan here with a PSA that the story of Achilles on Skyros is a separate tale from the Iliad and directly conflicts with the timeline set forth by Homer. It comes from an unfinished poem by a Roman poet who attempted to write Achilles' origin story. While the story is fascinating, and might be rooted in truth (for example, Achilles did land on Skyros), but it is likely embellished greatly, building upon embellishments of poets that came before. My personal opinion is that Homer's account of Achilles might be the most realistic, since Skyros is on the way to Troy and it would make sense for Achilles to conquer the island as a side hustle, especially since he supposedly landed there after a storm blew his fleet off course from Phthia. It's not a big island to begin with. He does indeed have a son (Neoptolemus) with the princess, who goes onto play a major role in winning the war after Achilles dies.

@browhattheactualfu-26593 жыл бұрын
What kind of armor would he be wearing then?
@therion54583 жыл бұрын
@@ghostlightdc Homer described Achilles as wearing a special suit of armor. Achilles' armor included "silver" reinforced ankle protection. So it seems appropriate to depict Achilles in some type of "advanced" armor for the time period. The classic Greek Corinthian helmet, traditionally made of bronze, isn't somehow terribly far displaced in time or complexity that it somehow couldn't have been fabricated by some metal worker in the late bronze age. Why should Achilles be stuck with wearing the generic Dendra armor of typical infantry?
@ghostlightdc3 жыл бұрын
@@therion5458 because that armor was not generic. You would have been lucky to have it or any armor. Homer wrote centuries after the actual war. The archeological evidence tells us what people most likely wore during that time.
@therion54583 жыл бұрын
@@ghostlightdc If it was not generic then how can we assume anyone was wearing Dendra armor in that time period outside of two or three individuals? If armor was that specialized and rare, then why should Achille's armor fit any specific mold? It seems appropriate to assume that a special warrior like Achilles would have some type of unique armor that didn't match the other armor of the time period.
@ghostlightdc3 жыл бұрын
@@therion5458 There are 3-4 different armor types we see among Mycenaean warriors of that error. The Dendra style is one and was probably the one that offered the most protection and perhaps helped birth the myth of Achilles. I would recommend the Elite Series books for great depictions of the armor of the time period. There is one on Mycenean Greeks and also the Sea Peoples that give great examples of Bronze Age armor.

Not to mention, of the Golden Apple fight happened at his PARENT'S wedding, how much time had passed since then? Couldn't have been more than a decade. Or did the goddesses fight for so long that he was a teenager, at least, when Paris made his choice? If so, how much time passed before Paris took Helen? And he had a son, who was a teenager, by the time Paris shot Achilles through the heel? Then, how old were the others? He is not a moon eyed passive romantic pining for the impossibly perfect Achilles. Patroclus is a hero in his own right with his own reputation as a warrior and was a suitor of Helen to boot. Sorry not sorry. Theres no solid evidence of the trojan war let alone achilles personal life. Gonna flip the coin here and go with Patroclus was achilles best friend/cousin as them being lovers doesn't sit well with me.
