Everybody who watched my videos knows that I'm not great at MTB fakies. Or BMX fakies, or any fakies for that matter. So I want to change that, and that means working on something new - a fakie front flip in my backyard skatepark. Enjoy the attempts, trials and tribulations of this continuous process. Any advice would be fantastic please!

It takes a special type of person to get good at any action sport really. It's humbling to try to give something your all over and over, failing every time, until you finally get it right. Being able to keep getting up and throwing yourself down something in order to learn takes a lot of heart.

No! Don't keep at it! Just because you can imagine it in your head doesn't make the physics correct! Lol! You need a lot of air time to front flip and you have basically none going fakie up a ramp!

You got it Matt! Might be worth checking out "Big Boy vs fakie frontflip", "Matty learns how to do a fakie frontflip" or "Matty Cranmer finally does his first front flip" on the Scotty Cranmer channel - they're both BMX but may give you some more insight into the process. One thing to note is they both have freecoasters, which would make it easier compared to the hub on the MTB.

I watched a video ages ago where Scotty Cranmer was guiding matty how to fakie to front flip, i think it was about 8/9 months ago, the vert he was riding was a lot steeper i think, plus the bmx made it alot easier, maybe try it on ben's bike first! Keep going through matt, you got this! 💪
@benh59
@benh59 10 ай бұрын
Haven't seen the video but I was thinking the ascent on the fakie needed to be steeper in order to generate enough force to rotate the bike. It also makes sense that a bmx, being smaller and lighter, would also help with rotation. Or he could just get Jamie to show him how to do it.

Try to forget about the fakie and relax til the pop, and leave the mattress up to the boys. That might let you focus on timing the pop, and just wait for the perfect fakie. I definitely haven't done this trick but that's how I've approached other fakie tricks. Good luck!

Have others learned the fakie frontflip whilst chainless? I feel like it's going to be harder with your cranks spinning free. It's a great excuse to get a freecoaster laced up to a spare rim so you can your own fakie wheel to swap out. One of those newer cassette + clutch coasters would be good for it since the re-engage quicker than the old designs. I think whatever way you end up doing it, it's still going to feel like your diving headfirst into the flat of the ramp.

Get Keiran Riley round. It will be very difficult doing it on a MTB. Most people you see doing them are on a BMX. Might also be the ramp not being more vertical at the top and not having the lip to pop off.

@mattjones thank you for showing the frustration of trying to accomplish a first time skill. The challenge is hard regardless of the skill because it's relative to the rider. It is a pitfall to compare things like "Y is so much easier than X because I did Y or they did Z and it's way harder than X there for I should easily" people are so different in how they interpret the problem of a first time trick or obstacle. The fear and challenge is the same, a first time trick is relative to the rider. Someone first time rolling a super steep rock face and first time rolling a stair set is the same mental challenge relative to the person. Comparing is waste of energy, how to solve the problem is where the mental energy should be focused. I have no idea how to fakie front flip but what if you screwed a board into the quarter about the hight you would flip from and from a standing position Front flip down without bike that way you would have a point of reference to flip? Decouple the flip from the bike, add bike then fakie, then flip. I hope that makes any sense at all. You got this!

If you to go to an indoor rock climbing centre and get the guys to hold the weight of your body while you stand on the wall facing down and learn to push off and flip forward. Then once you get that feeling take your trampoline bike or the one you used to learn the flip into the pool stand on the pedals and get a feel for how it would be with pedals under your feet. Could also do this into a foam pit? But you could use a flat wall with the ropes holding you from each side of your waist, like gymnastics and circus acrobatics to learn the feeling of flipping from that angle. It would involve having somewhere with that pull system attached to a wall where you could put yourself against a wall and get the feeling. Because if you pop off to much from the wall you will land flat.

Hey Matt don't be so down on yourself. It takes time to learn how to do anything. Look at your son crawling around on the floor I bet he wish he could walk go out on a date with the ladies but no he has to wait just like we did. I think it's great that you get someone in who could show you mentor you. Keep trying just don't get frustrated and then come down on yourself it's not worth it. And what I mean is put in yourself down that is devastating. You're always a happy-go-lucky guy I want to see you stay that way. Keep working with the guys get your buddies in there maybe Emil Johansen knows how to do it? Either way keep up the good work keep smiling keep joking and the rest of us will be here to watch. A for effort! In my head, it's not a forehead to the ground, it's a back tire hitting while the front tire is at 12o'clock and you'd be stuck there trying to complete the rotation. You've got it though, maybe think of it as bunnyhopping from the top of your fakie and tucking out to flat as opposed to flipping in the transition?

I feel you. But its a start. Everything starts in your head. Keep it up. Looking at your attemps. As if you loose your speed and ending up kinda staling, with no momentum left, up that big curved wallride.. I guess that is the reason you feel that you just a about to dive straight to your face, if trying. Looks like you would benefit a ramp with at "shorter curve, makes the ramp more snappy. A cooping would give you a bit of kick/pop. And no, I cant do them my self, i´m not a complete lunatic. Haha

Hey Helfare crew, I know Matt feels defeated on this but I think it's something maybe possible. These are some unsolicited random thoughts from the commenter who thinks they are always right but i'm not claiming to be right just want to help haha. 1. Concussions suck and you've had plenty and that's the mental block. 2. The mattress being moved in front of you is pulling you off line, the movement catches your eyes even as much as you want to block it out and it's killing your momentum and you're turning because of it. 3. It might seem sacrilegious but if you can piece together a front brake just to figure out the shift in motion forward so that the front wheel can kind of stay put giving you a better axis it could help? 4. What if you take the fakie part out just for now and see if you can front flip from a dead stop on an angle above a less consequence item. Like short term put in a board to balance on that incline you need to be on, kind of like a BMX gate but simplified, and a ton of mattresses and see if you can even flip forward from there. With no or limited momentum. Best of luck mates! Have a fun time progressing!

This frontflip seem to have similar mechanics as this gymnastic/actobatic maneuver called webster or loser, where You do some steps backwards and swing your leg heel-up for a quick snappy frontflip. It's mostly about extracting Your support leg and bend your waist so the rest of rotation is easily controlled by the swing. Would it work on a bike on vertical wall? dont know, but I guess some freerunners done it on walls.

try nose manualing the intial curve/transtion to help snap that back wheel up, using your feet to scoop the pedals up as you tuck into a ball, I guess hanging your head over the bars like you want to head butt your tyre whilst in the manual, will help the rotation as your bringing up the back wheelaa but im no scientist

Hey Matt this might sound crazy but you remember when you were practicing in the pool to do a certain trick? I don't even know how to think about what I'm trying to say and to turn it into reality, but... Do you think there's a way you can attach something to a bike frame that would allow the bike frame to spin in a circle while you ride on it? That way you could just cut loose knowing full well you're not going to get hurt as long as you hang on to the bike of course. Once you get that feeling then maybe you can try it without it? Or we could just get crazy and you can attach rockets on your ankles
