You can run all the rows of string at the same time and when the plant grows a few inches above a level of row of strings feed the top between lines crisscrossing as you go down the row of plants

I retired to FL 3 years ago and used the Florida weave last year (and again this year) on my indeterminate tomatoes with good success. I learned my first year here that the heat and bugs ruin the tomatoes before the plants can get too tall anyway, so 6' stakes are fine. I was used to harvesting tomatoes on a step stool in KY before I moved. Not now! I've had mine in the ground since mid-March, and they are almost 3' tall. I do use a post between every 2 plants, but I've only got 16 tomatoes. BTW, I went back last week and hilled my tomatoes up like you suggested.

On the Florida weave, I did it for the first time last year and I think I did everything 100% wrong! So...I'm gonna be smarter this year! On okra, I have grown Hill Country red okra from MiGardener and have saved seeds the last four years or so. Tough to geminate! Soak, heat, still slow. Three weeks and you're still wondering! Anyway, I bought the Ruiz okra this year and I swear, five days later, boom! So I've got okra ready to go, hardening off and 6, 7 inches tall. Plus some red okra way behind!

I tried dwarf okra last year. The first planting grew 7' tall, so I figured the seeds were mislabeled. The second patch I planted a month later from the same seed packet and in a bed just 6' away grew only 3' tall, like they should. I have no idea why, but i love okra, so I'll plant again this year.
@shirleyk623 Жыл бұрын
@Debbie Ricker. One of the tall okra seeds must have gotten mixed up with the other dwarf seeds you purchased. I once ordered broccoli seeds and ended up with collard green seeds. I guess mixups happen. My neighbor ordered tomato seeds and got carrot seeds. Since broccoli and collard seeds look a lot alike I guess someone just goofed. The company made it right by sending me a new packet of seeds. Maybe you could contact the seed company and they would send you a replacement. Good luck and happy gardening.😊

Thanks Travis. Got my posts and string ready and gonna try this for the first time this year. Been using 5ft conduit for over 10yrs now (2 per tomato plant) and this looks so much better than my conduit method and continually dealing with adding more and more string per plant. Have a Blessed day

Looking good there! I'm pretty ambivalent about the weather here in NE Texas. One the one hand, I like that we haven't been suddenly swooped from winter into the heat of summer, as we usually do. On the other hand, I started my tomato and pepper seeds too early, so I have them in their EarthBox containers twiddling their thumbs, so to speak. They're growing and even blooming, but I don't expect anything to produce as long as the weather shifts back and forth like this. I certainly won't get in a rush with okra this year! On the other hand, the sugar snap peas and lettuces are making it just fine. Kind of confusing for me, though!

Great vid Travis. Have you ever tried jute or sisal twine with your Florida weave? It is all natural and at the end of the season you can put it in your worm bin or compost pile. My garden plot still isn’t ready so I bought some grow bags and got tomatoes, zucchini, cukes, green peppers, and various flowers planted. I have REALLY missed having a garden.
@LazyDogFarm Жыл бұрын
I haven't tried that type of twine with the Florida Weave, but I have used it in other applications. It frays a little too much for my liking. I also like the box just because it's easier to use.

Good idea there, my friend. I no longer need to grow 162 of any one thing but those Proptek trays are too good to not use. Think I'll try a Dremel tool with a little cutoff wheel.

Hi Travis. Great video.How does the Florida weave hold up to heavy winds? I live in an area that, for some unknown reason, is plaqued with heavy winds in the late spring/early summer.
@LazyDogFarm11 ай бұрын
As long as you keep adding string and get it tight, it holds up pretty well. Using metal t-posts really helps. I have had wooden stakes break due to high winds.

Travis… how do you tell a determinate or indeterminate tomato if it doesn’t say on seed packet?! It seems here in Ky w/hot & humid summers that hybrids do much better. This yr I’m doing mainly Shelby’s & Hossinstors. I’m Using these mainly for my canners too! I’ve got different slicers but got 60 of those together. Got 100 or more altogether. My turkey 5:26 creek are up & doing great! Also… can legginess be grown out of okree ? Mine have gotten waaaay spindly. Thanks guys!

Google the variety and you should find a site that tells if you if it's determinate or indeterminate.

@markware7748 Жыл бұрын
Lisa, those Shelby's make a superb Roma type sauce tomato. If you're using a Florida weave, don't go more than two plants between posts or the yield weight can break your trellis down as they did mine. I believe both of those varieties are heat set determinates bred by Sakata seeds, the best of the tomato breeders. Get more light to that okree.
@lisaedgington3919 Жыл бұрын
@@markware7748 I know about my okree. But will it grow out of it? It’s bad spindly. I live in east central Ky & we’ve had dogwood winter here & then one of my grow lights went down & I had troubles big time! I’ve been putting them outside during the day under my umbrella on patio table. Not seeing a change yet. It’s still a tad early here for it anyways so I got time to start more if need be. My greenhouse was full so there I was! Plants are about 2 weeks old now. Hubs is going to try Florida weave this yr. It’ll be the first time for us trying it. We’ll probably do every plant to be honest. We’re using some old tobacco sticks for posts this first yr to see if we like Florida weave or not. The metal posts around here are way expensive and you just can’t touch a cattle panel in this area theyre so dern expensive! Thanks so much for the advice. It’s greatly appreciated. Have a blessed day! ✝️❤️✝️

@@markware7748 almost forgot… my cousin has thousands of tobacco sticks just lying in her barn. Might as well take advantage of them & their abundance! We’re also doing a teepee for our poke beans this yr out of them. We’re raising 2 huge gardens this yr. I pray it’s a good crop year this year. Had to buy my 1st qt of tomato juice in 2 yrs Monday night. Just let the same as homegrown for sure. Thanks again! ✝️❤️✝️
