The Quiet Man is a game full of cutscenes of people talking but with the audio removed so we don't know what they're saying. This is a playthrough of The Quiet Man where I guess at what the characters are saying.

Say what you want about The Quiet Man, it certainly has an ensemble cast. There's Emo Daredevil Ryan Gosling, the event planner from Mode, all the unnamed gangsters from Saint's Row, the Origami Killer, and the lead writer's mom as the Romantic Interest/Significant Mother. Sure, some people might say that he probably should have worked out those issues via a less public platform. They are right.

What a giant miscalculation. Apparently, going by the "letters from the producer" they thought they could turn this into a viral hit with lots of discussion and speculation by releasing the voiced version one week later. Imagine this was straight up a movie (and let's be honest, the gameplay is pretty inconsequential and minimal anyway): They're releasing a movie with tons of dialogue without sound, then invite you to watch it a week later once more, this time with sound and all the "answers". I think few people would be willing to put up with that after having three hours of their live wasted. Rather than discussing and speculating with their friends and then being anxious for the big reveal a week later, they'd rather be frustrated and spiteful. They'd talk about what a giant turd that movie was and how it made no sense at all, how annoyed they were with all the pointless, endless dialogue scenes and inconsistencies. Why do people talk to Quiet Man if he's deaf? He can't read their lips because he's either not looking at them or they're turned away. Is the developer just messing with us and he's not deaf at all? What is even going on at the most basic level of the story here? It could work if you do it really masterfully and the visuals alone carry a complete story, which is then completely re-contextualized once dialogue is added. Instead, we have no comprehensible story and apparently some "twist" once dialogue is added. What worth is a twist if there's no story to begin with? The soundless version cannot be worthless, confusing and meaningless if this is to work, is what I'm saying.

It kind of feels like they made a movie and they realised it was very meh and not well written or interesting so they did some stylistic choice to remove the audio without realising it means the game becomes a bit of a confusing mess that barely makes sense. There's some visual hints but it's like they tried to find a way to make things more interesting but then made it all the more frustrating or like they lost all the audio so they ran with it (obviously that's a joke but it's weird). The point of why people talk to this character who I suppose is deaf like the player but clearly has full conversations with him is strange.

Based on the snippets provided, I kinda dread to see the writing quality of the actual dialogue. "You're blinded by grief. Me by ambition. Having a deaf protaganist is a really interesting idea, and can bring up some great alternative storytelling. Unfortunately, Squeenix seemed have not taken advantage of this. It really feels like this was going to just be a normal (yet FMV laden) project, and the devs suddenly realized that all of their audio corrupted and just went with it.

I liked the idea it went for, and movies have featured deaf characters with the audience unable to hear anything very well before, but to do that you need to have emotive characters and specific camera angles to convey what is happening. All our characters are almost as emotive as planks of wood. That, and while the official excuse that Quiet Man can understand speech is lip reading, there's times where he's responding without even looking at the person who's speaking. Either he's telekinetic or just a really bad actor. I mean, million other problems with the game, of course, but they messed up it's core concept.

I love your interpretation. This was basically made to fill in the blanks with opportunities to make up your own story and make fun of it. You nailed it. It's kind of perfect for you and I was not disappointed. This really feels like an amateur film production that has you beat up the same 4 thugs and bird man every so often. Such a weird game that's unintentionally creates such hilarious moments. The use of FMV and in game scenes are strange and jarring to say the least. The plot twists are so lame. So many tropes that are thrown together without much context aside from flashbacks leading to revenge for mom girlfriend woman and shoes. The silence and some of the cuts between scenes really are baffling but I'm not going to unpack this because this video just speaks for itself. It's unreal this got made but I can say this was such an entertaining video from you that I'm almost glad it does exist for comedy gold purposes.

@Shenaldrac5 жыл бұрын
I thiiiink the idea was that him buying the food from the foodstand guy was supposed to be like, an information trade. Like the foodstand guy is an informant for the gang Quiet Man is a part of, cause he gets the food ready as soon as he sees Quiet Man. Then afterwards, Quiet Man takes a napkin out of the bag and it has directions to where he has to go. So I think the idea was that this was meant to be a low-key, innocuous information transfer. So it wasn't actually about getting food for himself at all.

You know what, you're right, because, whereas Ride to Hell's budget by the end was like rubbing two nickels together, this game had a legitimate publisher, and developer, and should have at least had the game equivalent of an independently-wealthy backer willing to drop $6 million on creating his own dream. Ride to Hell conceptually made sense at one stage of development before the rug was pulled out from under it, but, like the Room, this was always nonsense trying to be more than the studio was capable of creating. And, of course, the most important part is, like the Room, you really need to be able to riff on The Quiet Man to enjoy it, but all you need from Ride to Hell is to see one cutscene. Ride to Hell's great sin is you can see what it was supposed to be, but fell well short because they had no money, no talent, and one computer. It's the "Ben and Arthur" of video games. The only thing I remember about The Crow is the rooftop guitar solos and rolling my eyes at the villain incest. It's been years, but I recall going into it expecting it to be almost comically gothic, and that's what I got. The difference is that The Crow felt at least aware of being a melodramatic, style over substance comic book movie, and the supernatural stuff was established early on. "I don't know if I want to do it." - SGF in reference to playing through the game again with the audio on in "NG+". Oh, it doesn't matter what you want, don't you see? Bird Doctor commands you to play through again. For the true story.

There are moments in the game Control that echo this game and every time I shudder

It reminds me of Kubrick's 2001: A Space Odyssey. It was intended to have narration, but was removed at some point and it became a classic "art film". Does that make this a classic "art game"? 😆

...why was this a game?

Because games have much, much lower standards for story and writing than movies have, so what would have been a shitty movie script will be applauded as a brilliant videogame plot. That's the whole reason why hacks have tried to make "interactive movies" for decades.

I honestly wonder if the protagonist was even originally intended to be deaf or if that was just something they added in halfway through filming the live action cutscenes for the purpose of their gimmick. And maybe to distract from all the racism. Seriously, wtf is with that.

I'm an hour in and this is just hilarious. Based on some clues so far the 'w33d gang' I'm assuming are trinitarios (hence trini=3) , who are STILL butthurt over getting beat up the very first time.

Dear Squenix. Before you fund "games" about a deaf guy, maybe spend at least a little bit of time with some deaf guys. Also, y'know, FMV needs, uh, _actors_. You have to pay for them. Not just hire a fifteen-year-old model and your dad's mates.

Do you ever wonder if they chose to make this game/movie silent because they shot the whole thing only to realize that the story was really terrible so they thought they could sell it based on a gimmick alone?
