I have a feeling the SS-Officer, who was on the phone with an SS-Oberstgruppenführer, and the one soldier who was in space trying to ship a delivery but got killed by B.J was voiced by "Michael 'Bully' Herbig". He is a famous German Comedy Actor known for movies such as "The Shoe of Manitu" "Dreamship: Surprise Period 1". The voices sound oddly similar.

The voices for BJ and Anya are great. The English voices felt the exact opposite to me, with BJ the emotional one and Anya the one who is traumatized and withdrawn. It’s cool that they kind of swapped roles in the German dub and the dynamic still works!

I fully agree with your assessment of the censorship messing with the game's intended tone by removing too much context and ironically erasing many of the non-German identities by not using the proper accents or removing the Yiddish. Also a personal preference, but I enjoy Bubi's original voice more. I don't know; he might be from Berlin, but if I think about someone nicknamed Bubi, I think about someone Bavarian or Austrian.
@HappyBeezerStudios Жыл бұрын
The biggest issues with keeping accents is finding voice actors that are good enough at german while also keeping enough of the desired accent. Or just turning them all into german accents. And yes, Bubi totally should've been from the south east. That would fit with the name and an bavarian or austrian accent.

I’d say that calling the Nazis “Alpha Wolves” in the German version would be better than “the regime” or “dirty pigs”. Having their emblem being a wolf’s head in the 1960s and being referred to as wolves seems to give them a fearful and spiteful reputation. Being called “The Regime” sounds too generic and having the soldiers called “dirty pigs” doesn’t seem right to me.
@GermanPeter Жыл бұрын
Problem is that calling them "Wolves" is far too tongue-in-cheek. It calls back to the previous Wolfenstein games too much, which didn't take themselves nearly as seriously as this one does.

20:34 clarification, those diary entries are not hers, but of her fellow nurse Ramona, who was killed by the Nazis in the hospital alongside Anja's parents. Anja found her diary afterwards.
@GermanPeter Жыл бұрын
No, it's heavily implied that it's her diary. Not only does she say that "some of these things in this diary may have happened to me", but the Wolfenstein Wiki also points this out: "On the picture where you read the diaries, what is written is "Należy do Anya" (proper Polish version spelling: "Należy do Ani") which in English means "Belongs to Anya"." It also doesn't make much sense for Ramona to somehow take a keen interest in BJ the same way Anya did. She just lied about it because she wasn't sure what BJ would think of her if she outright told him that she murdered a lot of people prior to meeting him. So she wanted to see how he'd react to it if it was just some random person he never met. I'd imagine she told him that it was her afterwards.

I agree on the regime, given its so generic, what kind of regime? It also was odd how they censored names that didn't have too, like Berlin is just called the capital through out. @casanovafunkenstein5090 Жыл бұрын
If true, that's really interesting (not calling you a liar, I just don't know enough about the German language to know whether or not that would be a meaning that would have been understood by the average German). I took it to be a contraction, but if it's derogatory in the way you said it does line up quite well with the historical context with the much wealthier urbanised population being mostly liberal leaning and keen to justify the poverty of the rural working class as something relating to their character, as opposed to being the result of systemic repression and the German government offloading the failures of their attempts to challenge the other colonial powers of Europe onto the working class (whilst there were a growing number of socialists and anarchists who had been organising at grass roots level, they were not nearly as well represented in electoral politics due to a lack of class consciousness amongst office and clerical workers, who were relatively happy with the status quo and didn't want to risk their position of relative privilege. The left also also couldn't really make any headway in rural areas due to the combination of widespread poverty, low levels of education, youth exodus to industrial areas, lack of alternatives to farm work, and restrictive government price caps on food that were implemented to help with the previous hyperinflation, meaning that the people they were hoping to reach out to and connect with were more socially conservative, had lower levels of literacy, and also had limited scope to organise for better conditions. It's a bit difficult to get people to strike when the most likely outcome is that their place of work won't actually stay afloat due to how narrow the margins are and the people who they work for were likely to also have the ability to evict them, or even just enlist the military or a private militia to massacre them on the picket line.) Given how Hitler himself was mocked by the establishment for the way he spoke with a silly accent and didn't use sophisticated language, or even particularly well thought out arguments, in his public appearances, coupled with the majority of his supporters during the early part of his political career being from rural backgrounds, it definitely seems in character for the political mainstream to label them derisively as a bunch of ignorant bumpkins. It reminds me of the supporters of UKIP (UK Independence Party) over in my country pre-brexit. They acquired the nickname 'Kippers', as in the phrase 'strung up like a kipper'.

This is the first time I've seen anything from the German version of this game, and I gotta say I agree with your point. The censorship and removal of context was so much that it almost feels like it changed the tone of the game. These aren't fictional "space Nazis" like in Star Wars, this is very clearly meant to be set during WWII and these are very clearly meant to be real Nazis. So sanitizing everything to this extent almost makes it feel like a parody and borderline disrespectful at times.

I feel like censorship like this is kinda concerning, its obviously fictional but Wolfenstein is one of the most anti nazi main stream games there is and removing all references to the nazis not only lessens the impact of the game but it almost feels like its lessening just how bad the real world nazis were. Im sure german citizens are well educated on how bad the nazis were already so its not like this is a major issue but still downplaying their severity in media seems like the wrong type of censorship to me(sorry if my thoughts aren't particularly coherent its 4 in the morning and i didn't reread it lol)

Like mentioned by someone else if you buy the Wolfenstein games on steam you will also get the uncut version of the game to your library. So they are available if you so choose. Furthermore I have to add that it's suprising how little you actually get taught about WW2 and the Nazis themselves. I find this extremely questionable, especially the fact that our politicians are trying to basically erase that part of the history from the peoples minds which is very problematic. If you so much as mention anything particular about the Nazis there is a good chance a few people will think you are a Neo-nazi which makes zero sense. I mean in Germany simply flying the modern german flag or displaying it for example on your house will immediately cause you to be called a nazi. Ridiculous.

I always figured that they replaced their name with "Das Regime" because now they are no longer 'just' a force you're fighting on the front lines, or a specialized group hiding in a castle and trying to raise the dead - they've actually managed to take over (most of) the world. They went from "That one country attacking people" to "The actual literal dictators of most of the planet". On another note, I absolutely love the work they put into this. Having actual proper German, even in the English version, adds so much to it. It makes it more real, less silly, and makes watching the original version of the game so, so much more fun as a German person. But even the German version's full dub, as you said, is absolutely fantastic. It really is much like a movie in some respects, and BJ's voice actor especially absolutely knocked it out of the park. It's a shame about the Polish/Yiddish and accents, and some of the censorship, but besides that it's a real 10/10.

New Order was my first Wolfenstein game, followed by Old Blood and New Colossus. But I did manage to track down an original PS3 copy of the 2009 Wolfenstein, which is what leads directly into New Order. One thing I always found curious is that in RTCW and Wolf 2009, Deathshead is seen wearing a monocle, which is conspicuously absent in New Order. It was also stated somewhere that Deathshead is nearly a hundred years old in 1960.

Not really. They used some of the same characters, like Totenkopf and Caroline Becker, but that's about it. And even then, Caroline is MUCH older than she's supposed to be (she was about BJ's age in 2009 but is way older here), and it's completely up in the air if 2009 even happened in this universe. 2009 was a direct continuation of RTCW, but that game was re-imagined with The Old Blood, which stopped basically where the first act of RTCW ended (after killing Olaric). And afterwards, BJ directly flies over to Totenkopf's compound, which not only means he never had the time to do whatever he did in 2009, but Totenkopf wasn't even in Isenstadt at all. The developers also directly stated that they're ignoring 2009's place in the timeline.

They're all good, it just depends on what you want. Wolfenstein 2009 is in my opinion the easiest and simplest to get into, and it has the most fun mechanics. The New Order and onwards aren't bad, I just think the gameplay gets frustrating at times and they're HEAVILY story-driven. You play one level and watch cutscenes that are longer than the actual level at times. Also lots of padding in New Colossus in my opinion. Return to Castle Wolfenstein is a classic, but I think it's also too frustrating at times. Not a bad game, but not as good as 2009 in my opinion. And Wolfenstein 3D can be extremely confusing, and might be too basic for newcomers.

2:05 For some reason I somehow never thought about the fact that you would speak in German when not in a KZbin video context. Honestly, I kind of prefer the Wolfenstein logo to the Swastika in that context...just fits better, perhaps because it is more visually interesting. Those wolf symbols are honestly really good! I quite like that. Well...that is a dumb name. Why would they do that though? Wolves is such a cooler name even if they were absolutely horrible people. Something that makes me really sad about the Nazis is that the common Soldat and just every officer was a regular guy taught to be evil. Not a psychopath, just the guy across the street given absolute power and told to kill. Everyone has the capacity for evil, just most never get in the right situations. (Added later after he mentioned it) In a way, I feel bad _for_ the common Soldaten who would have had a completely average life beforehand but instead was indoctrinated by the Nazi party to not see people as people. 31:53 My first thought on him was "Wow, he looks like Duke Nukem"...his voice definitely does not match that. 33:51 Reminds me of Miracle Max from The Princess Bride. 39:49 I really like the way you said "probabilities" for some reason. I...really like Tekla, have never played the game but wow, I feel bad for her dying just from those couple minutes of dialogue. The woman with a golden gun. Wow, Strasse's German laughing actually made me laugh from how unrealistic it sounds! Would have been neat if, instead of completely removing the lines, have Some of the Bavarian and possibly Austrian lines kept in as well as adding more non-Bavarian German ones to add more diversity in the accents. 57:40 It is like if you are playing Crysis and understand Korean the hardest mode's change of language becomes moot (Also, in looking up some translations of German words for a part of the comment not included I found that if you look up "German word for" one of the top results is "punchable face"...guess people need to know how to punch people in German. According to Google it is "stanzbares Gesicht".) Also, something I noticed about myself, when writing KZbin comments I tend to make at least 3 typographical errors in long comments like this. I only noticed it after starting to put them in a Google Doc in case KZbin decides they wanted to be deleted. I genuinely thought I was able to mostly fix my dyslexia-misspelt but apparently I still do it a lot. Not important to the video I just found it interesting. In this comment I misspelt "definetly", and "Barvarian" without even noticing, usually there are more, commonly I misspell soilder. Anyway, thank you to everyone who actually reads my waffling, you absolutely do not need to, I just like commenting and talking about things.

Good video as always. TNO is my favorite and I played it all day when it got released. It's sad to see they ruined the IP with the sequel.

Only now i noticed, usually this series thend to have a silly thumbnail, with a stereotypical German or Just a lego minifigure, but not this one, this one is Just serious since the games itself are a lot more serious about the theme

Well that all Nazi symbols where removed in the german version, is simply to explain. All symbols of the Nazis, like the Hakenkreuz, are forbidden by german law. (§86 and §86a Strafgesetzbuch) The only exception for this, is when those symbols are visible in "Art", like exhibitions or movies (who are considered art). There is a discussion that goes literally for YEARS if not decades now where people wonder, why games arent considered art and need to get censored. And one of my favorite "Funny BJ Momends" is, where he stabs a sleeping Nazi through the mattress of his bunk bed and is just like: "Aufwachen! Du bist tot..." ("Wake up! You're dead...")

Nope! Already addressed that in my Wolfenstein 3D video. You're close, but it's not quite like that.

I played these games back when they first released. Old Blood being my favourite of all of them. I found the German dub to be serviceable but I still prefer the original dub. I also prefer the original since killing Nazis is much more satisfying than killing unspecified evil Germans. It’s why I don’t want the nazi symbols to be removed since they aren’t being portrayed in a positive light whatsoever here.

I'm actually seriously surprised that there were so many recasts. I would've fully expected that they would've kept most of the people on board since the German speaking cast was largely German-American, Austrian-American or solely German or Austrian - would've been a real easy time finding people for the job! Granted I'm not a native German speaker, and only have a somewhat ok grasp on it (can decently understand it when spoken and written, but don't force me to formulate myself in it, I will die), I can't say I ever noticed the accents too much. Maybe it's because I have Bavarian friends and come to accept that as an ordinary thing? Who knows! I will say, though, I am rather disappointed by the censorship/rebranding in this localisation. It feels so entirely unnecessary, especially considering the stance the game takes on the actual subject matter, even going as far as to marketing the second game as a protest against Nazism in the US. There are even a few scenes I stumbled upon playing mostly a stealthy playthrough (because Über enemies absolutely shred) where the officers themselves are portrayed as "victims" in the Nazi regime they've helped create and maintain, following orders to avoid their families being taken away and such - it's a heavy game! But I appreciate that it is a heavy game. It feels like a way more mature take from the franchise. Speaking as someone from a country that was occupied back in the day, there's really no sugarcoating the topic, and I'm glad they didn't try to in the original English release. Especially the characters in this game felt very real and good. I liked spending time with them, I liked them being varied and having actual personalities and opinions, something they did a fantastic job of leaning more into in the sequel. May just be a weird personal opinion, but The New Order really outdid Doom 2016 for me. It's an experience that stuck with me, and I felt really engaged with everything. Extremely satisfying game (with some bullshit, holy heck shotgunners are a nightmare) and one I really can't recommend enough!

Yeah, the censorship really annoyed me. It's even worse because they kept it up in the later games, one of which made me genuinely upset because of how unnecessary it is. I can understand not wanting to depict the holocaust because a lot of Jewish people died and it might be disrespectful to put that in a game with Nazis on the moon. But to scrub away ALL references to Judaism? That goes way too far. There's literally no good reason to do that.

@@GermanPeter A shame! Thank you for covering these, though! It's very interesting to see these localisations (not that we'd ever get any in my language, unfortunately) and how different teams try and replicate the feeling of the original. They're good watches and I appreciate the little digs of research you do behind certain things, it's very cool. Keep up the good work!
