Humans are mostly the same as we have been for generations, ie we cooperate really well in groups of less than 50. We came to dominate the world because of our cooperation and communication, as well as the invention of agriculture. We are capable of great cuelty and greed but also great altruism, solidarity and compassion. We have hope because decarbonization is already happening and will continue due to market forces but we need to make it happen faster. There are and will be worsening impacts of climate change. I appreciate the sentiment and you probably already agree but we can and must do more and we can't just be nihilistic. @aosbc4294
@aosbc4294 2 жыл бұрын
Yes and no. Floating sea-ice already displaces water so melting only changes states from solid to liquid and does not increase overall sea level. However, glaciers and large formations of ice on land, such as in Greenland, certainly will have an affect on sea-level rise. Sea level rise itself will certainly be an issue for coastal low-lying cities and territory and will likely result in long term mitigating projects and some cases retreating infrastructure to higher ground over long term. There are also numerous other issues of such large quantities of fresh water being introduced into the world's salt water dominant oceans though and in many cases the outcomes are hard to quantify and predict!

The UN Convention on the Law of the Sea (UNCLOS) of 1982 is the main foundation of legal order, according to which the five polar states bordering the Arctic Ocean have the right to establish a territorial sea up to a limit of twelve nautical miles and an exclusive economic zone of up to 200 nautical miles. Defines the rights and responsibilities of nations in their use of the world's oceans; it establishes guidelines for businesses, the environment, and the management of marine natural resources. To date, 167 countries and the European Union have joined the Convention. This treaty both codified customary international law and established new law and institutions for the ocean. The United States did not ratify UNCLOS because of fears among conservative Republicans that it would undermine U.S. sovereignty by transferring “ownership” of the high seas to the United Nations.

Thank you for the video and brining more awareness to others. Makes me wonder about the many other motives of the Antarctica landmass and everyone staking claims down there too, as well as all the chemtrail spraying that seemed to have caused more warmer weather around the globe; that may have sped up the melting. Also the natural weakening of the magnetic field of the Earth and the speeding up and the speeding up and shifting of the poles; most likely brining about erratic weather patterns, jet stream fluctuations, volcanos and earthquakes too. I know many people will disagree but I honestly don't think that excluding Russia from those agreements is a good idea. I find it really worrying when people put all the blame of the Ukraine war on Russia, as if its citizens were ok with that. It's actually the consequence of a military culture coupled with western pressure for Russia to do as they say. So, what I'm trying to say is that we should focus on getting all parts to some agreement, like the fishing ban mentioned in the video, and continue work towards oil and gas ban, not only in the artic but in the planet as a whole. We have to remember that the people of the Russian Federation are as much victims of this geopolitical war games as the other citizens of directly affected countries, except those in Ukraine that are obviously the most impacted ones. So, isolating and sanctioning Russia is not the way beyond, it has historically caused more harm than good. It often leads to far-right and ultranationalist groups gaining more power and then leading to catastrophic conflicts. Putin isn't great, but a far-right dominated Russia would be way worse to deal with. Diplomacy should be our main tool, not guns and heavy armsrace. The problem with diplomacy is that it takes both sides to give up on something, which both the West and Russia have constantly failed to do so. That can be done if the high executives of important end-consumer companies start to drift their business away from fossil fuel production and choose more sustainable options, even if such options are more expensive. That would leave their respective countries with the upper hand on negotiations. The thing is, for that to be true as early as possible, it would require the West coming closer to China, increasing the trade with chinese manufacturers of steel and silicon for the production of wind turbines and solar panels. However, the Great Leaders of the West have decided to ramp up their commercial war against China, instead of using this as opportunity to cooperate and come closer. It's madness, really! They are trying to confront both China and Russia at the same time, picturing them as villains of the world.

@@stevem8318 This is not true. Firstly, we’ve brought Co2 levels to the highest point in approximately 4 million years, highest in human history. After greening until the year 2000, research has shown that the earth has’s greening period has reversed, it’s now getting browner. We’re already seeing ocean acidification due to rising co2 and higher ocean temperatures. We’ve already seen issues with that in regards to food supply; crabs in Maine and Alaska have either attempted to migrate northwards to colder waters or have died trying. That is just a small example of what ecosystems on our planets have had to deal with, after being subjected to the highest levels of co2 in 4 million years.. in just 150 years time. What we need is stability. Earth’s climate for all of recorded human history has been remarkably stable, a range of 1-2C of change ever since the last ice age ended over 10,000 years ago. We clearly have the power to alter Earth’s climate, so why can’t we just keep it where it was? That way we wouldn’t have to worry about ecosystem die-offs from warming or cooling.

A group of people were going to sail through the opening Arctic and were stuck because the opening channels froze again. The United Nations wants all the little nations to get huge sums of our tax dollars and they want to brain wash you into believing that the ice caps are melting so you will let your politicians fork it over. And no, summer sea ice has not disappeared despite the hysterics predictions and is not likely to disappear any time soon. The reality is, working in the arctic is extreme and expensive. Just because there are resources there does not mean it is economical to extract them. This is just another example of the typical DW climate hysteria puff piece. The way the sea and air currents work in the Arctic, means that the ice is pushed up against Canada and the northern tip of Greenland. The rest of the Arctic is relatively open and navigable in August and September, and that window of navigability will increase over time. Furthermore, most of the oil and gas resources are in Russia and Alaska both offshore and on land, and offshore in Norway and in the Bering Sea. Canada and Greenland do not have the right geology for oil and gas, except for a small part of Canada next to Alaska.

The ice melting is what the planet does cyclically. Humans may be increasing the speed of melt, but it’s not a bad thing. Animals come and go. Humans come and go. Humans have adapted to these cyclical changes over the tens of thousands of years and we need to keep doing it. The cry of climate change is that of people unwilling to change their lifestyle or tradition. The planet will be fine, we will be fine, if we adapt. Let’s focus on fishing our trash of of the sea above all else.

Americans have been drilling for oil in Alaska for several decades. It transports crude oil through pipelines that cross Alaska from north to south. I know this for sure, I read it in the American magazine National Geographic. It was an article about caribou migration and how the pipeline route obstructs the animals' path. DW should inform itself better and stop misinforming.
