What an amazing tool! Thank you for this, I love geography! ☺️ The only downside to the short is that I have to hunt down the name of the map in the description since the video focuses more on what I shouldn’t type in google. I think it would have been a lot better to actually mention the map you promote in the video 🙂

My dad told me that in his tribe from Mexico, they cut your hair when you become a soldier he joined the army and they made a big ceremony before they cut his hair off to have your haircut. There needs to be a reason why his reason was to be a soldier, the white man’s reason was to separate us from our ancestors

Bro, I was in Bemidji Minnesota for two years and spent most of that time in group homes and treatment centers with tons of Ojibwe and Lakota kids. We used to quote Smoke Signals nonstop, every day. One of the group homes I lived in this girl named Deanne, would wake us up every single morning by shouting “HEYYY VICTOOORRR” to wake us up and start the day on a positive note. Thank God for this movie

I personally didn't get the vibe that Wind River was pro-assimilation, but am interested to hear the perspective of those who did. I'm not suggesting it's a perfect film, and its a film written by a white guy about a white protagonist, so it's not really a native story, but I did think it was successful in portraying an institution as the main villain rather than an individual. Like it didn't matter whether or not Elizabeth Olsen wanted to help, she was set up to fail.

I cringed a bit when you showed images of natural history museums in this video essay. While I do agree with you for the most part, that objects stolen or bought without permission from third world countries should be repatriated, most of what you see in natural history museums (except for the anthropology collections, which I could write an essay about on its own) was collected ethically. By the 1800s, most paleontology was undertaken by aristocrats who did it for fun, or fossils were accidentally dug up during construction. Now, when it comes to geology and jewelry collections, then yes there are huge ethical issues with those. Overall, I still love museums, and feel that natural history museums are by far the safest, ethically, to visit as the specimens were generally collected ethically.

You may call yourselves "native," but someone else "owned" the land before you. So who is actually native?

The reason was Max at the start was not really liked, a tom boy, but by this point she was much loved by the viewers and in that bit with that song she is trying to run back to safety, and yeah it was quite a hill to run up, the odds were very much against her, so the writers did a FANTSTIC job with those few minutes and that was so emotional, absolutely gorgeous and the song really stuck with people because of that scheme

The first thing they got wrong is dividing the one American continent by modern countries and categories made up by Napoleon (latin america and anglo america). Geronimo was mexican, "american", and ultimately, none.

Thank you for providing this information. So many people in USA do not know the history of native americans. Im Modoc, and when i tell people my tribes name they are so confused. Becuz sadly majority of people dont know natives outside of the key ones mention in history books (navajo, sioux, etc), let alone a west coast native. I wish people understood that natives are still here and tribes have had to indure for many 100 of yrs just to be allowed to live on their ancestors land and speak our language.

My grandpa was Native American, but he never told us what tribe. I didn't think about it much growing up until one day someone asked my sister what nation she was descended from. She was told it was obvious based on her physical appearance. Until then, I had only identified with my father's Mexican heritage. To this day(I'm now 60), I have only a vague idea. My aunts say Apache, or Yaqui. We don't know, however, it's interesting how many blonde haired, blue eyed people will proudly proclaim Indian ancestry while I remain silent on the matter, because I just don't know the specifics.

With all do respect you can’t just imply that the Cherokee confederation was the first democracy and that the whole of western democracy depends on its presence. Its creation may have even influenced the Americana government. But it’s not the sole progenitor of democracy. That’s just not true and saying that claim make me wary of every other claim you make.

It is disturbing that POC mostly had to learn about ourselves outside of the history books. As a lover of history, and a person who's family lived through history (Jim Crow, Separate but equal, Civil rights) my first mission was to gather as much tools to learn about Africa, the slave trade and the Civil War,etc. I explained on another video that history is written by the victors. If you are the conquered your story is erased and replaced with the narrative of the conquerers. This erasure and assimilation has gone on for centuries all over the world. The United States will need to reconcile with its past and so too do the countries that sent their people here to plunder, pillage, remove, erase, enslave, rape and annihilate anyone that did not look like them. CRT is important. This is not to humiliate or shame anyone. We have a shared history and one that can't continue to go unacknowledged or swept aside. The past does repeat unless we all are willing to sit at the table, ask and answer the hard questions.

Guess what, I’m on American soil. Because if you want to be historically accurate victors goes the spoils. Been that way for hundreds of years. Also, the American Indians killed one another for hundreds of years over hunting land. You’re lucky the government gave you land in the first place.

Generalization creates division, be specific with how you categorize yourself. Either by Nationality or if possible specific ethnic background. For example: a Swede and a German aren’t the same because they both have the same colored skin, they’re different because one is from Sweden and the other is from Germany.

It is cool watching Native American films that show so much more than the common narrative of how they were stolen from their lands and how they are discriminated. I am sure their stories and lore is so much more than just tragedy.
