His eye for detail is amazing !. At first I thought the left and right windows looked a bit odd / uneaven, then I noticed it was exactly like on the actual engine. An illusion caused when you view the engine slightly from a 3/4 angle.

Whenn we had a national rail system owned by the government providing a service to the people, and we had "Railways Artists". All gone.

Now our rail system is owned by foreign governments, and the exorbitant prices we pay subsidise train travel in european countries. Anyone who thinks the Tories are patriotic is a mug.

Great Artist. I used to pass his former home in Ember Lane, Near Thames Ditton, London. There are new houses there now but there is a 'Blue Plaque' dedicated to him in the wall of one of them. We used to have great fun looking for his trademark, which was a mouse hidden somewhere in the picture. With regards to the class 28's were very unreliable which was mainly down to their two stroke Crossley engines. They were down to be re-engined once the re-engining of the class 31's had been complete but owing to the large drop in traffic during the 60's BR had a surplus of loco's and they were deemed non-standard and withdrawn instead. There were also 10 no. Class 08 diesel shunters D3117 - D3126 that were fitted with Crossley engines and they were also subject to an early withdrawal in 1967 and all scrapped by May 1968.

I know the X and XA classes in Perth, Western Australia used similar engines to the Metrovicks. Maybe one day, someone could build a D5720 with an imported X(A) engine.

Hindsight is a fascinating thing, all these art pieces that were made of the Metrovick Type 2s, British Railways must have believed in them in having a future on the network, not yet knowing their bloody awful engines would take them off the roster within 8 years.

Edition 18 from 1972. Although the slow selling ex Hornby Dublo model was on in the Tri-ang Hornby catalogue for one year in 1966. Recent Oscar Paisley vids show more of the model st work 55 years later. Mr Snooze also.

Interestingly, Cuneo, sketches the 9F as 'background' for the Class 28, but in the final painting we see what appears to be a Black 5.

It's simple, if you take a close look at a locomotive when standing right in front of it, you can see much more details. And its also because back then, cameras were not as good as they are today.

Fair point...but Cuneo was an enthusiast as well as a fine artist and his paintings convey not just the image but the atmosphere of the railway as it was back then. Look at any of his railway paintings, particularly of steam locos inside a depot you can almost sense the smell of hot oil on steel, coal fire, smoke and sound. David Shepherd was another such artist, starting with highly evocative and dramatic paintings of elephants in Africa and went on later to record his other passion, steam locomotives in the final years of British Railways. Like Cuneo he could only produce his paintings by going there to soak up the atmosphere as well as outlining the sketches. Compare these artists' paintings to the sort of pictures one sees of trains on jigsaw puzzle boxes. Very nice, but flat and one dimensional. Cuneo had a special trademark: all his paintings (including one of a Guardsman) had a mouse somewhere in the picture!
