The Ramayana in Myanmar | A Burmese Tapestry (Kalaga/shwe chi doe) | Curator's Corner S8 Ep10

In 1767, Hsinbyushin, king of the Konbaung dynasty of central Myanmar, launched an attack on the kingdom of Ayutthaya (central Thailand). After Hsinbyushin's victory, many of Ayutthaya's people were forcibly moved into the Burmese heartland, but with some continuing to work in their specialist fields. One such group were the Thai theatrical troupes. And they took the Burmese court by storm by giving performances of the Ramayana epic.
Today, curator Alexandra Green looks at a ‘shwe chi doe’ or ‘kalaga’, which is a textile hanging from central Myanmar. The textiles depicts scenes from the 'The Ramayana', which originated in India, but which was adapted for local use in many parts of Southeast Asia. Although known in Myanmar before 1767, the narrative became particularly popular after the arrival of the Thai troupes. It was performed and adapted in a variety of art forms, showing the lasting impact of Thai theatre in Myanmar.

Thank you ! Looking forward to checking out this exhibition in December. I've been to Ayutthaya only once mainly cos of a popular Thai tv series that is based during that era. Love Destiny series - Buppae Sunniwat & Prom Likit. 😊 As well as the docu 'Mark of Empire' It's curious why they incorporated Ramayana and the sacking of Ayutthaya in this textile.

We did a family yrip to Ayuttya. Hugely interesting remains ... but that substantial city had bee reduced to a skeleton by the Burmese. Like the ruins of a 1945 European city after a 1000 bomder raid.

🗿CALZONES ROTOS 🗿 Ingredientes: 2 1/2 tazas de harina sin polvos de hornear 4 cucharaditas de polvos de hornear Pizca de sal 3/4 taza de azúcar 1 naranja, su ralladura 1 huevo 1/2 taza de leche 1 cucharadita de aceite Aceite para freír Azúcar flor para espolvorear. Preparación: Paso 1 En un bol mezclar la harina, polvos de hornear, pizca de sal, azúcar y ralladura de naranja. Agregar el huevo, leche y aceite. Amasar hasta formar una masa suave. Dividir la masa en dos trozos. Mientras se trabaja con una, tapar la otra con un paño de cocina. Paso 2 En una superficie lisa enharinada uslerear la masa de 1/2 cm de grosor. Cortar rectángulos de 8x4 cm. Con un cuchillo hacer un corte de 2 cm al centro a lo largo. Pasar una punta por el corte y sacarla hacia el otro lado. Repetir el proceso hasta terminar con toda la masa. Paso 3 En un sartén hondo calentar aceite a fuego medio. Agregar los calzones rotos cuidadosamente al aceite caliente para evitar quemarse. Freír 3-4 minutos por lado o hasta que estén cocidos y dorados. Estilar en papel absorbente. Espolvorear con azúcar flor y servir.🗿

It’s a lot more complex than this. Especially with Hanuman in several stories. There are hundreds of characters and the stories are all interwoven. This is why it’s a good thing India is a living culture. It is why I watch and listen to so many things about India, Indian media, Indian film, Indian music, etc. ❤

How would you feel if we had stolen the stones from Stonehenge to put them in a museum on Easter Island? It's worse, because for we, the Rapanui, the moai is a sacred friend. Return the moai and all the stolen things.
