I think y'all all made good points. Jay and Nas are in a different universe than other rappers. In my opinion Jay and Nas are top 2, regardless of which one you have 1st or 2nd. I personally have Nas number 1. As a Nas fan, i think the reason why Nas fans are so loud currently, speaking from my perspective is because there were years and years where the media never had his back and held him to standards, while Jay got some passes. Even now when you look at the overall hip hop media, they really aren't giving Nas his just due for this run that has never been done in hip hop history. Nas fans that are day 1's have no choice but to keep his name alive, because the mainstream hip hop media won't do it. Jay deserves all the accolades that he gets, but if he has dropped Kings Disease 1, 2 and Magic as a 3 peat this late in his career, we wouldn't hear the end of it. While nas for the most part gets no coverage in that regards and its been like that for years.

True, I love Hov, but I hate how most of the media covering him basically work for him or have financial influence to only say positive things towards Jay and downplay Nas. I don’t even think Jay wants spread some anti-Nas message, but calling Nas the best when you work for Jay is just awkward and risky when Jay confidently states he’s the best.

Couldn't have worded that better. I'm a fan of both as anyone who truly loves hip-hop should be. The two of them are leagues above the rest. Us Nas fans just have to put in more work to give his name the GOAT recognition he deserves.

Y’all trippin on the JID critique! He’s one of them guys that will be make a lasting impression on the game. And saying JID is like Kendrick is like saying Kobe was like Jordan…..so the fuck what!!! Kobe is still a legend!!! And it’s certain things Kobe did that Jordan didn’t…. Just like it’s certain things JID does that Kendrick don’t. Niggas that technically skilled don’t come along that often. This was a very good album. Check out the 2007 song that didn’t make the album because of sample clearance….it sums up his story so far.

His octave is too high to stay engaged with his music. He doesn't have a grounded tone of voice. That's why I didn't like, I had to turn it off because he's too reminiscent of Kendrick. Changing his voice from calm to frantic, the beat transitions, the soul samples. He's knock off Kendrick. His name should be KID.

Jay has always rhymed in code, used metaphors and double entendres. His verses have been worthy of a breakdown like this. The fact that he's reached the financial heights and public notoriety he has and at this age combined with the maturity in subject matter is why he is getting this attention. You can't argue that the backpack era of hip-hop addressed the same topics because times have changed. Yes our communities were policed differently and yes we received stiffer penalties for selling less harmful drugs. But people couldn't just legally choose to sell the same exact drugs penalty free and legally. There was also the sub culture of backpack and Rawkus MCs that were popular to an extent but that is no longer the case and where are those same MCs today now that there paychecks have increased. Don't forget Khalid is beneficial to Khalid, who has a ton of artists on the album.

This response is exactly why I fuck with this podcast. Every pannelmember giving his own opinion, no 'politically correct' answers. No echo chamber bullish. Just raw honest truth @ Jarv: I understand now. And i do agree to your point of objectivity. My problem is I'm used to hearing 'big names' in the culture talking about certain artist and mediocre or even trash albums and upholding them to the highest regard because they are afraid of losing money/sponsorships/future guests/backlash. I'm just glad that everybody on this table speaks their truth. @ Cinsere: I wholeheartedly agree with you. If it doesn't resonate with me, I can't call myself a fan. I just realised most of the artists you fuck i fuck with to. Nas, Kendrick, Tribe. Ghostface is top 5 for me. @ Deenie: I like your answer because it explains my Jay / Nas opinion. I'm a big Nas fan but not a Jay fan. I do respect Jay because he's a fucking icon in this game and I'm a fan of The Blueprint and The Black album. @ Mase: Thanks for being this honest! The Jay verse is overhyped in a way that has been used to reestablish Jay’s crown as the king of hiphop. Juxtapose the Jay reaction versus the crickets that followed the release of Magic. There’s a huge gap in the amount of media coverage and critical acclaim.

Another great, great show guys. Jarv was on point here. It was a good verse, but I also blamed Guru on the hype because he and Lenny spoiled before it drops. I can understand that the verse is more meaningful for Jay’s crew than for us the fans. Some context to the “overreaction”, Aril Melber is as a hovenger as me and you Jarv and is not the first time he broke down Jay’s lyrics in the same manner on his show. He even has compilations of videos quoting just Jay-z because he is a fan. The Twitter space?? Jay has been jumping on those spaces regularly lately. He did for Alicia Keys' album, and The harder they Fall movie. This was just the tweeter space for Khaled's album ( LL col J was there too). I still blaming Guru but remember, when Jay drops something good, We the fans hype it up, and then the media react because they want a piece of those clicks too. Is because is beneficial for them $$ Remember when is good only, because nobody talked about that Coway, Kiss, and Jay song when it dropped.

@@ronaldpilgrim5868 so since he sells out shows and wins every award known to man in 2023. I’m not allowed to feel the album is one of the worst I’ve ever heard? Ain’t nobody trying to stop Kendrick from being successful. Crazy how you can’t even say what you like and don’t like these days. Back in the 90’s I remember debates with people who could dislike classics like The Chronic, Illmatic, The Infamous. If they gave reasons why they didn’t like it. It was respected. Not everybody likes the same thing. Whether an artist is popular or has a well known classic. Nowadays if people don’t like something. People bring up everything outside the music. All the successes lol it’s ok if somebody doesn’t feel the same. It won’t stop Kendrick’s bag or success. I don’t think anybody sharing their opinion wants him to not be successful. Rap is a sport especially for an artist like nas and his from the era of Sublims he even did it on song success with Jay. I think on Meet Joe Black it was friendly jabs and rather obvious ones. Jay Z has a song called i got the keys and Nas starts the chorus off saying Run me the keys, Jay referenced in 4 different ways all his B's (billions) on a song with Nas recently and then Nas says run me the b's. But where I think its obvious Nas goes on to say his number one and "I wear the crown, the city is mine, you cannot hold that". Jay had a song called the 'city is mine' which played a role at the beginning of their beef with jay z declaring himself King. Nas finishes with "I'm not the one to go at, you fuck around Meet Joe Black" (death). i think it's obvious friendly competitive retaliation to Jay at the time saying nobody can stand on stage with him. But do I think Jay was dissing Nas nahhhhhhhh

1:36:16-26 BOOM!!!!!!!!! The Realest shit said about JID and this generation of the lyrical miracle rap shit. It's like I get it. HE CAN RAP, but It's not impressive as Mach-Hommy AT ALL. They don't know how to rhyme in that pocket. Busta Rhymes could rap his off BUT couldn't really make great albums like that. This album was wayyyyyyyyyy too overhyped all because of the dislike they have for Mr. Morale and The Mid Steppers. Brilliant assessment.

Mr Morale and The Big Steppers will be the best album for then next 5 years. Y'all tripping. Overvaluing Jay's verse (high mid verse), undervaluing Kendrick's album (highest of highs perfect 10/10). I can't trust 3/4's of this podcast's evaluation skills. Y'all off the chain. Love the podcast. Love the brothers, but nah. Some people don't know until afterwards. Same thing happened to Yeezus "I don't like it, it's weird" ten years later, "oh this ish is fire son! Fire I tell you!" Get tf outta here. Y'all JID take was spot on. His gimmick voice is irritating. Him and Cordae have nothing to rap about, they come from a very easy era and rap is getting a to a point where there's nothing left to say. We have squeezed the lemon dry.

JID sounds too much like Kendrick for me to get into his music. The intro alone had GKMC vibes. The flow, the voice. Idk if it’s him paying homage or just straight lack of self awareness.

Shut up and quit crying about Jays verse being overhyped. It deserves praise. Give the man his flowers. He is the oldest rapper ever to spit a great, perfect verse. I think a first is something to celebrate. Idc if it's his best or not. He has too many great verses. He is beyond determination of his best. This verse should be added to one of his greatest tho.
