My mom said that when she was a kid, my grandma used to talk abt the Rapture like it was gonna happen SOON. She was terrified and had trouble sleeping, because she was sure she wasn’t “good enough”. Imagine being 10 and worried abt being ripped apart from your family and being left to suffer alone

Your grandmother had a flawed fear of God. Though our society could use a lot more of that than what we have today. How many of you actively reach out to those facing life alone? Most do not, yet have time to gripe about anything that might call them to change their own lives.

They assume they'll be the ones rising to heaven, when hoping for it to happen soon is a reason why they'd be among the ones left behind. No good person hopes for the apocalypse and the destruction of everything. The ones lucky enough to survive shouldn't feel good about it.
@XavIsOnline

@@jacobcox4565 I think applying notions of good vs bad people in such a way misses the point here. What makes religion effective is that it hammers your moral compass into the shape it needs, using highly evolved systems of psychological exploitation. No matter how strong the pull of your conscience, your animalistic moral instinct, if you have been browbeaten and gaslit into seeing such instincts and even moral reasoning as definitionally EVIL wherever they conflict with dogma, then the ethical landscape can become nigh indecipherable. And making such character judgements as yours can become counterproductive.
@jacobcox4565

@@XavIsOnline I still think hoping for the apocalypse is wrong, because the breakdown of all governments and society as we know it combined with extreme natural disasters all over the world would mean the deaths of millions. Wishing for the rapture to happen, and by extension the apocalypse, also means wishing for the end of countless lives. Also, the prerequisites of getting into heaven are so vague that no one really knows for sure if they'd be safe if the rapture did happen.

They aren’t religious canon. They are extra material to help explain the faith better, which is why they can often be referred to. Take G. K. Chesterton’s “Orthodoxy” as a good example. It isn’t biblical canon, but has been associated with bringing people, such as C. S. Lewis, to the Christian faith because it best illustrates the strengths of the faith while also explaining it for those who might not understand as it is described in the Bible itself. Such works are condoned and supported by different Christian denominations to help those who want to become more faithful better understand the faith itself. They aren’t “Biblical canon,” but extra material to help explain complex concepts through narrative or some other means.

"god" is good and the "devil" is a meanie weenie aka when luck happens its god's doing and when a bad ouchie happens its the devil's fault.

1300 Israeli people was brutally slaughtered. Women and children and men without mercy. They were tortured, burned, raped, just unthinkable in front of their family members. I think you have lost your heart to think that you did not even shed a tear for them. And yes God of Israel will avenge himself and fight for them against all the nations that continues to blame Israel for the Hamas massacre. It's like a man raping a women and says I did it because she dressed like a whore. Who in their right mind would support such an excuse as a justifiable reason. They even cut open a pregnant woman and stabbed her. Is this the kind of thing you support? And then when the police wants to catch the bad guys shouting I can't breathe making the cops look like criminals. This God hates when evil becomes good and good evil. Repent of this evil and learn what is good.

@@shineandre Every extremist group and every extremist ideology arises from a response to something, from dissatisfaction. When the establishment moderate ideologies, whether right or left, are unable to meet the needs of the people and comfort them with the same old discourse, people turn to extremist narratives and ideologies. Extremist terrorist groups only exist because Israel escalated the situation to unnecessary points that could clearly be avoided. Hamas only exists because of the actions that Israel has been committing against Palestine for decades! Israel prevents humanitarian missions inside Gaza(UN itself reported this), Israeli army commits atrocities against innocent civilians IN THE SAME WAY that Hamas does. . . Understand the following, friend: Hamas only exists because it is a response to the crimes and negligence that Israel was already committing against Palestine; Hamas is the PERFECT ENEMY that Israel needed to justify their military actions against the rest of the Middle East; As long as Israel continues to commit the same practices, groups like Hamas will continue to exist forever and ever.

I used to be in the church until I started wondering something. Why isn't the focus on being radical in finding ways to help the vulnerable? In showing kindness? In acts of generosity? In gentleness and patience? Where does humility fit in? Those are not traits that most people associate with the church, and yet they are exactly what the church and Christians are supposed to be known for if you go by the bible.

They miss the big stuff. I was fortunate, I went back and examined everything with fresh eyes. I know many that left Jw's and gave up on God altogether because their view of him was tainted by the organization. They have a very weird non-biblical view of death. In the bible, the spirit is eternal and death is just moving from this life to the next. The death isn't the scary part. It shouldn't be, especially for christians. The scary part is the judgement. While christains shouldn't fear the judgement the same way a nonchristian should, but probably won't, they should. It's appointed unto man once to die then the judgement. We all are scheduled to die from the day we're born. We let other people's actions dictate what we believe. "That church is bad because the decon was a bad person." or "I don't believe in God because this bad thing happened." We have trouble seeing a larger picture. Don't let someone else's bad actions keep you from having a relationship with Jesus.

She panicked, thinking the rapture had happened, so she tried calling some people she considered ‘Holy Ghost filled,’ none of which answered the phone. From what I remember her saying, she basically fell apart at this, thinking she was left behind to suffer for eternity. It’s terrible how this belief becomes so ingrained in people that it causes breakdowns over such small things as a house being empty. These beliefs are damaging. I’m glad you’re talking about it!

Why did she fall apart? I mean the next 7 years will blow, but she should have took a look at her life, confessed her sins and accepted God's forgiveness. You gotta keep your eye on the prize.

@@Caercutta30 @Caercutta30 the point im trying to make is that even though she is a good person, she was terrified over something so trivial. It seems you believe the rapture will happen, okay, but surely you must see the large amount of stress it puts on people to believe that the tiniest thing will get them left behind. I know i used to pray that God would forgive all of my actions, even if they werent actually biblical sins. This has caused me to have constant doubt about everything i do, i don't even trust myself, which is stressful. That's why i think this belief can be harmful. Perhaps it isnt for some people, but it is for too many.

As a kid with undiagnosed OCD, the rapture was by far my biggest fear. I was convinced that my intrusive thoughts were God speaking to me, and even if they weren’t, God could hear every thought that I had. If you know anything about intrusive thoughts, you would know that they are incredibly scary and make you feel like you’re a horrible person and in my little nine year old brain, I knew that I was going to hell. I remember asking my mum if I was going to be raptured, partly because I wanted her to tell me of course because I was a kid, but mostly because I wanted her to tell me I was a good person. Like lots of people in this comment section, I remember feeling horrible dread when I couldn’t find my parents at home bc I thought that my parents had been raptured and as I was a kid with horrible thoughts that I had no control over, was left by God. As I got older, my ocd and undiagnosed autism manifested into a long battle with mental illness. I regularly had episodes, and every time I did, death was an option for me to not be raptured, hopefully God would understand that and maybe I wouldn’t be sent to hell for them. After every episode, my mum would tell me that God would not allow me into heaven and I just remember who I was, and that I betrayed her. My desperate prayers would never be heard, the end was near and I was bound to be left behind. Now that I’m slightly older and medicated, my relationship with religion is practically non existent. I never want to feel the same fear that I did when my mum or dad would talk about a new event in the news that proved Jesus was coming, and I know for a fact that religion will be non existent in the lives of my future children. My mums fear mongering tactics made me believe that God was out to get me, that god wanted me and my entire family dead, that God couldn’t possibly love me. I still feel the same fear I did when my mum doesn’t come home from work on time or when my dad spends more time then expected going out for the weekly shop, and I know that that fear will always be there but I have found peace in the fact that the rapture is out of my control. If it will happen in my lifetime (which I doubt), I can’t do anything about that, and even if I don’t get handpicked by God to not suffer for eternity, I doubt I would fit the qualifications anyways. My life will be spent happy, and the idea that I can be left on earth without any of my loved ones isn’t really my worth constant worry.

As a kid this horrified me. I was so worried I would miss out on so many life events I found important. The first instance I experienced this sort of "Christian Terror" was when I learned of the crucifixion of Jesus. It procured a deep feeling of terror and sorrow in my 5 year old head. I did not like that someone had to be brutally murdered for our salvation and it made me sad that someone depicted as so kind was killed so brutally. It did not help that my teachers pushed the narrative that as a Christian I would be persecuted and maybe killed like Jesus. I was not able to sleep for a while and I would begin to cry abruptly as I was horrified about that idea. I remember learning about the Rapture and thinking that it was a horrible thing to do. Almost every day I would look at the sky and I begged God to let everyone go on another day. This cycle of pleading for my life and others happened throughout my middle school years. I didn't want life to end for anyone nor did I want to miss out on anything I saw as important. Because these ideas were engrained into my head, my anxiety was worsened by a lot, as I lived in fear that one say life would simply stop. Now as a young adult, I see that these ideas were fear mongering and extremely harmful. I am now very spilt from the religion that I was forced to grow up in. This video honestly made me feel a whole lot better about still fearing this horrid event despite not being attached to religion.

I always thought it'd be fun to right a book about the rapture from the Christian perspective, where they go to heaven and learn angels are a separate species of horrific eye-wheels, and the raptured humans pretty much exist to live as a subclass of servants to God and the angels for eternity.
@thadtheman3751

Well before you "right" a book, I suggest you learn to spell. As for being servants to angels, there is some Christian folklore that when God created Angels he told them"bow to no one but me". Then when he created man he told the angels to bow before man and that's when Lucifer rebelled. So servants of angels-- not so much.

People who are obsessed with the Rapture and the second coming of Jesus are people who simply don't want to accept their own mortality. They don't want to grow old and die because deep down they are afraid that maybe there is no afterlife. And so the only way they can know for sure that there really is an afterlife and that there really is a God is to be alive when Jesus returns. And so the cling to any evidence that points out that Jesus will return in out lifetime. Sometimes they become tempted to find out on what day Jesus will return because if Jesus is definitely returning in our lifetime then we should be able to calculate more or less on what year Jesus will return.

(I developed crippling anxiety, a mood disorder, as well as a personality disorder as a young adult js) Anytime I was walking through the house & couldn’t find my family, I would panic thinking that they’d been raptured & I hadn’t been good enough & was “left behind”. I am now 31, completely deconstructed since I was 27/28 & been in therapy for many years & STILL panic briefly when I’m at my parents house & can’t locate them immediately. Needless to say, I refuse to ever take my son to church. I tell him “don’t ever let them convince you there’s something wrong with you” regularly. I love my parents but oh my do I wish they’d not instilled these beliefs in me. & it makes me sad as I watch my siblings passing it down to their children. I've always considered the whole "Rapture" idea to not only be incredibly dangerous, but downright cruel too. Here we have thousands of people actively hoping for an event that will plunge the rest of us non-believers into 7 years of chaos and death and suffering, before being cast into eternal hellfire so the suffering can continue *literally forever* while they get to chill in paradise. Doesn't really help the whole "love thy neighbour" concept methinks Edit: To all religious people who seem to be missing the point of this comment - I don't think the "Rapture" is dangerous and cruel because I'm afraid I'll go to hell. Quite the contrary: I don't believe the Rapture is ever going to happen at all. Nor do I believe God/heaven/hell/the "soul" exists. It's all just sadistic fanfiction on an already fictional storybook (the bible). I'm criticizing anyone who believes in the Rapture and also claims God is kind and loving. If you find that cruel, study a bit the JW indoctrination about the final cleansing of the world when Sword Mouth Jesus will need his 144,000 chosen to kill everybody still alive after rapture and tribulation... WITH SWORDS. And they are not just reluctantly accepting that or putting it off as a distant future (after all Revelation can be read that the peaceful rule of the Antichrist will last 1000 years) they are actively looking forward to being THAT trusted and loved by god that he'll ask them to do his butcherwork for him... I had multiple scares as an indoctrinated child. Once I was carrying hunting blind materials and deer feed through the woods as a twelve-year-old boy. I lost track of the way and couldn't find the hunting area. I found my way back to the vehicles eventually but no one was there so after wandering around and yelling for about an hour I felt ridiculous when I stumbled upon my dad and his friend drinking some pepsis waiting for me. I thought I had been left behind because i found jackets on the ground at the trucks. I thought that the rapture happened which is why I couldn't find anyone. I was genuinely convinced while walking through the woods crying and praying. It was devastating and terrifying. They were laughing and asking if it was me that was yelling. I told him no it wasn't me yelling I was just taking my time.

Hehe. BTW there is something wrong with your capitalism in America (not only there ...). The fairy-tales by people like Harold Camping about the end of the world is their business. They literally make their living of it (and of course of gullible or since childhood brainwashed people). So ... IF they don't keep their promises (the end of the world turns out to be a lie ...), then they should take responsibility for that too. Such as recourse and compensation for the many people whose lives have been influenced or ruined by this misinformation. I could think of even more appropriate punishments ... biblical, of course, like caning or crucifixion. The latter, of course, was a joke. Disfellowshipping these people would be the minimum. After all, they simply allow themselves to speak for God. That's enough in most cases for a nice excommunication. But as always, these scoundrels with their jets and fine suits use double standards. I remember the 2011 one, they talked about it and it kinda scared me as a kid. They always talked about it in a sort of "joking" way, but they would talk to us about "what ifs" a lot. So I grew up with some anxiety over that. It's weird, ESPECIALLY to put on children. @@samandcarlie "It's never been used to promote joy" [?]. Good grief, I've been in the ministry now for over 30 years, and I can tell you that the rapture hope is the source of great joy among believers. And, remember, the rapture is simply part of the first resurrection. It's the moment when living believers are caught up to meet the Lord, along with the believing dead. It involves a reunion of the people of God. So how is this not a joyous event? And I'm reminded of the Apostle Paul's words to a group of infidels: "And why is it so hard for you to believe God can raise from the dead?" If God created the world, which He did, He certainly has the power to not only take, but to give life back again. And when it comes to scaring people, I would say that some of this is not healthy. But not all of it. In fact, the Bible says that one's approach to evangelism should be tempered by the particular person or audience at hand. It says, "Some save with compassion, while others with fear." There are things to fear in life, one of them being the day of judgment for the unrepentant sinner.

I've always had this little idea in my head to help me cope with anxiety (people talking about the rapture used to trigger major panic attacks for me) that someone guesses the actual date, and Jesus just throws his arms up and is all, "well, now I'm not gonna do it". The idea soothes the anxiety.

same, used to trigger major, deathly painful and raw pure anxiety for me. like for real. now that i’m older, my brain can go, “well that idea is a bit silly and is actually traumatizing in nature so maybe i should or pay attention to it”

As an atheist I don't believe the deity in the bible is real, but I became an atheist by studying the bible and yeah there's a verse that says pretty much exactly that: 35 Heaven and earth will pass away, but my words will never pass away. The Day and Hour Unknown 36 “But about that day or hour no one knows, not even the angels in heaven, nor the Son,[f] but only the Father. 37 As it was in the days of Noah, so it will be at the coming of the Son of Man. - Matthew 24:35-37

Also something that helped me, is that the signs of the end times (plagues, famine, wars and rumors of war) are literally just a summary of the entirety of human history. Rapture peddlers like to say we're in more war conditions than ever; might I direct you to the two world wars. We're nowhere near those levels. Seriously, if you can stomach it without an anxiety attack, look into the conditions of world war 1, and as for ww2, we literally unleashed the power of the sun in Japan twice, after pretty much everything that wasn't the Americas or Australia was practically ravaged to the ground. As for covid, it's still not nearly as bad as some of the plagues mankind has fought off before.

Well according to my "rendition" of The Faith Gay people and poker players can still fo to Heaven Why you may ask The *BIBLE* specficaly (in some wording differences) says "...anyone who belives in Chirst...........will go to Heaven...." and ".....Be KIND TO everyone the same way....." That's why I've always though why some Christians are so prejudice when the *Bible* says to preach and treat everyone as you would yourselves..........like why is it that specficaly gay people won't go to Heaven are you telling me they would not got to Heaven when they Belive in God even though It says "....anyone who(same thing from before)...." I mean there are many parts of the Bible where those "you won't go to Heaven because I say so" people were saved(as in not die) Rebecca (the prostitute) from that Jericho story.....and that other prostitute who(was it wash His[Jesus] feet with perfume) washed His feet was not condemned(as in "saved"[as in Jesus was ok with it]) and that one criminal who was killed with Jesus...which Jesus told "...As in on this day you will be with me in Heaven...." So by saying these "people with sin" will not go to Heaven is what I always though was wrong....like you're telling me since they committed sin....they are not allowed into the Church......THE same BUILDING where one learns about Christ......like how are we supposed to tell gays about Chirst if we just shun them......thinm about it which person do you think the gay is going to listen to(as in listen about christian-ism)....the Preacher who shuns gays and wants them killed or the neighbor who doesnt mind they are gay My God. (God) are so many Christians Dense......

I was raised in a catholic household in a deeply catholic Area - And the rapture was even laughed at kinda by the Priests with the remark "We Humans probaly destroy the world before God could even think about it.". There are simple more pressing matters in the Bible and in Life.

You're priest's remark made me chuckle a bit. We humans are so obsessed with the end of the world that we'll probably try to bring it about, only for God to intervene and make sure we don't succeed.
@DaroriDerEinzige
@DaroriDerEinzige 3 жыл бұрын
@@tempestvenator9809 But, from a religious point of view, would he be for a God if he would intervene? I mean, he gave us Freedom of Will - After over 5000 Years of documented Human History, we aren't "Childs" anymore as a Species, are we? So which right do we have do demand that God on the one Hand should let us make our own Decision but on the other Hand he has to "whipe our Ass's"? That strikes me at many Atheists and overly religious People - They are either frustrated that God doesn't "clean your life of all challenges" or blame some random thing for all the "bad" in the world. But even if we would take the Bible as a 1:1 Book, it's kinda clear that God granted us the Earth and maybe the whole Universum to grow - To develop ourselfs. All the "Bad" things are in our reach and might to change. It isn't like Cancer (Which is always put forth as either "Something bad God did to us / shouldn't have put here if he's so full of love" or as "Punishment for a lack of belief / Challenge in our life to question our belief") would be an illness which we couldn't ever treat nor heal. Actually, we got all the Tools to better ourselfs, the world and defeat "all evil there is" - And to prove that, we just have to look around us. Humanity already defeated so many Challenges, in a World filled with Wonders you can observe everyday in a Galaxy so bright that every night you could fall in love with it again. There's so much beauty, in the most simpliest and most complex things around us and we're free to explore and understand them everyday. Personally, I think that's is pretty much the short version of what Nietzsche wanted to say even with his "God is dead, and we are his Murderers" - Nietzsche was Son of a Priest, growin' up and wittness the rise of probaly the most evil part of History of Germany. We killed God, because we made him "Human" - With desires we as Humans could fullfill, ideals we projected on to him and demands he had to fullfill for us. So we constructed a "Slave Moral", solely based on our weaknesses. Only if we accept that there's no sense in it, we can grow to something bigger because then we're forced to put our own sense to it. To "become Gods" of our own because only then, we may can grasp the reality, only then we're may able to understand it truly and only then we're may worthy of Gods attention and love. ... Sorry, Wall of Text but I liked the Religion Lessons back in School, they were often pretty open and most Teachers were pretty heavy into Philosophy.

I was also raised catholic, and the more I've learned about evangelicals in this country, the more relieved I am that I didn't grow up with thay. At least as a catholic I would only focus on hurting myself in penance, as opposed to hurting others to fulfill prophecy!
