The king reading a poem of the goth father! Just awesome! Thanks for the experience you gave me with American Gods, a true masterpiece! Oh, and i cant forget: Shadow - Hey Huginn or Munnin, Say nevermore! Fuck you said the raven.

Having the last name of Ravenstone, I grew up deeply steeped in Poe, I've heard it many times, from many. Never, never have I heard it the way I've long imagined it read, and the way I have read it to my children. Thank you :)

I really think this is my favorite reading of 'The Raven' simply because your voice really fits the narrator in a "normal person" sort of way. So often we want Poe read by prolific voices like James Earl Jones or Christopher Lee, but I say a more down to earth voice like Neil Gaiman gives the speaker more credence as a "real person," as it were.
@curtwiederhoeft68468 жыл бұрын
Possibly, but Basil Rathbone's is completely awesome. I personally get a much stronger vibe that he "feels" the events in the narrative.
@gnikcohs8 жыл бұрын
I have no objection to Gaiman's reading, but the narrator is hardly a down to earth, normal, kind of guy. The poem itself IS his voice, and it is a powerful resonant voice (poem), and lends itself to a powerful, resonant reading.

This is my favorite reading on youtube because it actually sounds like someone in a study experiencing what is happening and going through the emotions of the poem, and not someone reading a sad poem over macabre music (not that anything's wrong with macabre music).

Over the years I've listened to well over three dozen people recite this poem. My very most favourite poem. For the many youtube vids I've seen I've yet to hear a celebrity of any sort recite it if they actually knew the poem well but for the late great Christopher Lee. But sadly, strangely, Lee included a croaking raveneske 'nevermore', an avian mimicry that abruptly, rudely, draws you away from his otherwise excellent recitation. So many wonderful speaking voices fall short on this poem - because it is a lengthy burden that speaks to too few. And too many people, the great and mighty Mr Gaiman included, rush through it, without sorrow or soul.

This is amazing. Bing recommended this to me, when I asked it if it was possible to dream of a future technology that would allow as to hear Poe himself reciting this poem. Bing said it's possible to speculate of such a thing and told that in the meantime I could enjoy Neil Gaiman's rendition of it. I think Bing guessed correctly that this would be the closer to Poe's reading. This was exactly what I was looking for. If I had a time machine, one of the things I'd be sure to do would be to go to one of Edgar Allen Poe's readings of The Raven.

Neil, Your You Tube reading was forwarded to me by my son. He felt it was one of the better readings he had heard. I agree. Instead of the monotone employed, even by some of the great actors who have read it on You Tube, or have had their readings posted on You Tube, you give appropriate emphasis to the words you are reading. However, emphasis alone does not convey the range of emotions felt by the speaker. I also liked your backdrop for the reading. It was most appropriate. I suggest for your consideration, "The Raven read by JLKriegel" on You Tube. Your comment on that would be appreciated. J. L. Kriegel

Edgar Allan Poe didn't write "The Raven," he merely claimed it in a kind of 19th-century "identity theft." The poem's premiere was submitted anonymously to "American Review" under the pseudonym "---- Quarles" by the true author, Mathew Franklin Whittier, younger brother of poet John Greenleaf Whittier. Poe, a critic for the New York "Evening Mirror," seeing the poem in an advance copy of "American Review," scooped Mathew in his own paper by two days. Mathew had shared a copy of "The Raven" with Poe in early 1842, so Poe had a handwritten copy in his possession. This enabled him to convince his editor that he had permission to scoop "American Review"--but he mysteriously left the "Mirror" shortly afterwards (suggesting that he may have been fired for lying about it). It is the height of absurdity that the editor of a newly-launched monthly literary magazine like the "Review," would have given a daily newspaper this permission. The real author was not in a position to reveal his identity because of his anti-slavery work and connection with the Underground Railroad, and hence could not publicly defend himself. My paper, "Evidence that Edgar Allan Poe Stole 'The Raven' from Mathew Franklin Whittier," can be downloaded from the following link, or it can be read by searching for the paper's title in Academia.edu. www.ial.goldthread.com/MFW_The_Raven.pdf

I think Neil Gaiman is a very clever writer. However, I did not think he put enough effort into reading this. We need to feel the terror that builds in the poem. I gained the impression that he was reading through it quickly, rushing to the end so it would be over and done with. The art of story-telling is an ancient one, and sacred to the human condition. My feeling is that most people would say Mr Gaiman has the writing of the tales to a level that could be called mastery. However, that is one part of the story. The other part is the telling, and that should be given the same care and attention. I do feel uncomfortable writing this and I do not mean to be offensive in doing so; I just feel that if one engages in an art it should be done with the fullness of one's attention and skill, not treated as, "Oh well...I might as well." Offered with all respect to Mr Gaiman.
