I reckon they don't have nukes there. If it's to keep all the bigwigs safe, adding a few silos or even storing them seems like a poor idea. Nukes add danger just by being there if something goes wrong, and if enemies think they were active silos they'd target it even harder than before... Plus the added staff to manage the nukes and the space to store them seems counter productive, especially nowadays.

I worked there as an outside contractor once. It's not that the whole thing's a big secret, the trouble is finding someone to ask who actually has the answers. I had to get clearances to go there, but the only restrictions we really had were: 1. Don't go exploring, 2. Don't take pictures, and 3. If you see anybody you recognize, keep it to yourself. Obviously we didn't get a tour or anything, but our escort shared all kinds of fun facts about the place. We definitely weren't "need to know" people, and if the logistics and such were really that confidential they wouldn't have given us the trivia session. Still pretty neat though, and WAY bigger than you think it is. Those tunnels are massive.

As a Naval Officer back in the early 90's, I was a Systems Engineer for the National Military Command System and spent a lot at time at Site R. Back then, it was the primary alternate site for the National Military Command Center and the various Service Command Centers to relocate should the Pentagon become unusable. At that time, it was primarily a back-up site that had a skeleton crew keeping the systems operable should the need arise with recurring drills where staff would practice relocation from the Pentagon to ensure a seamless a transition as possible. It is a small town underneath about 1000 ft of solid granite with very thick blast doors because of it's cold war origins. As we are now 30 years later, I would guess the continuity of operations mission is still primary with probably other missions that have been added and evolved since 9/11. We didn't have any alcohol on site back then.

I worked the Continuity of Government program from 1980 to 1985. Made many trips to Site-R, Mt Weather and the E-4B at Offut AFB and Andrew’s AFB. The one thing I’ll say about Site-R is it had really good food. The walk in from the entrance was a pain though. Chasing communication cables thru the tunnels and crawl ways was definitely an adventure as well. Same could be said for Mt Weather, though that facility in the 80’s was quite a bit smaller than Site-R.

I have an amusing story to add to this subject. I hike on the Appalachian Trail a lot in Pennsylvania and it passes nearby Raven Rock. I used to know two people who worked at RRMC in the 1980s. Because it was constructed during the Truman Administration, the locals in the town of Waynesboro used to call it "Harry's Hole." Site R is the worst kept secret in Pennsylvania and a lot of people have heard of it. About 20 years ago, WGAL TV 8 in Lancaster was announcing winter closings and delays due to a snowstorm. Whether accidental or not, they broadcast that workers on a particular shift at Site R didn't have to report for duty due to heavy snow. So much for being a "secret site."

The gates at the public road typically stay open. If you went through them you'd come to the guard post and be turned around. This is what's shown in the still at 5:30. The yellow paint on the road is where there are steel barricades a few feet thick. And it'd be the Capitol Police coming to visit if you got too curious about the fence, the marines don't hang out there.

I used to be a CQB instructor that trained the US Marines who guard our nukes. A few times a year we would have to go to random storage spots where the Marines were at to train them there after they graduated the course. The coolest thing about going to these sites is seeing all the cold war relics still hanging around or still in use today.

I live near that, its pretty neat. Homeland security patrols the local area and if you go to the right places you can see literal doors on the side of the freakin mountains with hummers parked outside. It's a hell of alot bigger than people think. There are tunnels that run miles off into nearby towns, hidden in the forests, and they are also watched by cameras and daily patrols to be sure the cameras are seeing what's actually there.

Please look into Mt Weather. I number of years ago I attended a one week long, FEMA earthquake disaster response exercise there. There was the above ground FEMA facilities, dorms, cafeteria, bar, etc. and on the other side of the mountain, a very secure underground area that we were not allowed to even get close to, it was very heavily guarded. The site was not known to the public until a TWA 727 crashed into the side of the mountain on Dec 1st, 1974. The news crews responding to the crash accidentally discovered this fenced-in secure facility. At the time we were there the (Vice?) President's helicopter landed there every day, sat on the ground for a few minutes and then flew off again. We were told that this was so if the Vice-President actually needed to be moved there because of an national emergency, the helicopter arriving would not cause any undue alarm, since it happened every day.

There was a time i think in the 80s where they published stolen material from an FBI office that _really_ made the FBI look like a sneaky bunch of A-holes. May I bring to your attention two things: Operation High Point & Operation Low Point Brad Meltzer's latest book uses a lot of information about these two operations in order to create a fact-based background/setting for his book. But the interesting and salient part is that the government set up a dozen (or more?) mega-warehouses (apparently 5× the size of a CostCo location!), each one being a huge store-house for pretty much anything that might be needed in case of TEOTWAWKI. Medical supplies, long-term food storage, basic industrial supplies, maybe even weapons & ammunition ... just about everything! But these aren't military bunkers/store-houses, but rather are intended as 'deep back-up' for the civilian/commercial sectors, again, in case of TEOTWAWKI. Brad is very open about what he found out, and even his visits/tours. Perhaps a collaboration with him would be a good idea, as he apparently already has contacts inside the system! I'm sure I'm not the only one who'd love to see whatever you could put together about these places! *Go For It!*
