We.had a visiting Fijian Rugby team stay for a competition at my Army base, After a stretch off session in the pool. The team manager gave a pep talk then they all interlocked Arms and sang for 30 mins, it was so glorious and unexpected I forgot to record it the pool hall acoustics made it boom out. What an absolute joyful experience.

As a young crew-member on the original ss Oriana, in the 1960s, I regularly visited Suva, in Viti Levu, Fiji. When we left, there was usually a Police pipe band (which pleased a Scot! I also liked the "long kilts" worn by the males) and a choir. I fell in love with Fijian unaccompanied singing all those years ago. What a joy to discover this KZbin clip. Happy memories.

What an absolutely charming comment! Thank you! Fijians of a certain generation have iconic memories of the Oriana. As for myself, my parents and I migrated to England in 1967 on the SS Australis now, sadly, a rusting, submerged wreck in the Mediterranean.

The British Empire still has its effects all over the world.😉 I’ve had some experience of Barber Shop type singing in the U.K. and it is certainly good fun. Personally I think they need a larger bass section to give it more depth, but they’ve done a beautiful presentation with some lovely people. May Jesus be praised every day in joyful song. 🙏

Thank you for the insight. I hadn’t realised that being Methodist limited their musical style. I have been to a Pentecostal service where there was more guitar music than choral music. Look up music by Brooke Fraser Ligertwood (on youtube). Her father was a champion Fijian rugby player, and her music is played worldwide.

Why do I feel like I'm in Wales?
@ThePaleBlueDot

Don’t forget that Fijians have inherited a Methodist religious culture of singing and hymns that has roots in Wales. 😃🇫🇯

They should try singing in a room with good acoustics- the room they’re in is a hinderance to unamplified singing.

I would love to get them in a recording studio or at least somewhere more conducive to the sound of their extraordinary voices.

That was the style of the 1st group, very to the metronome, not flowing. Thecresof the groups were better examples of musical harmony vs just beating out the song.

These voices are beyond heavenly...SO NOT IN THE RELIGIOUS SPIRITUAL SENSE, but of a musical hauntingly vibe. My holidays in FIJI...were sadly from a tourist prospective....BEING A KIWI therefore tuneful as PACIFIC people are....what my friends are singing is NOT strong REAL or authentic. FIJI...I LOVE, RESPECT, ADMIRE and ENVY YOU. .Please do not allow anyone to exploit your gift!!!!.
