The RBS 15 has an interesting story as it was a missile that the Swedish navy did not want, they had selected the Harpoon as the weapon of choice for the new generation of FACs. SAAB got very nervous at this since the navy going with Harpoon greatly increased the chances of the air force selecting Harpoon as the replacement for the air launched RBS 04. So SAAB used a massive amount of political influence to convince the then government that they could design an upgraded version of the RBS 04 that met the navy requirements without significantly delaying the introduction of modern SSMs on the Norrköping class. Of course it turned out that SAAB very much underestimated the time it would take and the navy had to wait for years before the missiles were actually delivered. On the positive side it was still a remarkably short development period for what turned out to be effectively a new missile system and an excellent system at that.
@harri988519 күн бұрын
Finnish navy ships and truck mounted on-shore launcher platforms were a big customer of the RBS-15 during the cold war. If I remember correctly it was also used by Swedish JA-37 Viggen as a heavy antiship missile that could use a pre-programmed pseudorandom route to distract AA fire. It is an awesome missile, especially for its time, it was definitely way ahead of the competition.
@Vonstab19 күн бұрын
@harri9885 The upgraded AJS-37 could carry the RBS-15 but the original AJ-37 was restricted to the RBS-04 for the entire Cold War. The air launched RBS-15 was really designed for use by the Gripen rather than the older Viggen. It is just that at the time no one expected the serious troubles and delays that the Gripen would experience due to the problems with its fly by wire system.

maybe you can help me get if there’s an error at 1:something, because I thought sweden put in service the world’s first ship-to-surface missile with the RB-08 in ‘66. Was it that obsolete compared to the rest of the world already in the 70’s ? sounds strange
@Vonstab11 күн бұрын
@@valentinmagnenat3159 RB08 was essentially a repurposed French target drone, it was a large and heavy system that could only be carried by the largest destroyers in Swedish service. By the 1970s the navy had finally accepted that they would never get the funding needed to build new destroyers and frigates. The future was missile armed fast attack craft and small corvettes. So the navy needed a missile that could be fitted to the new Norrköping class as well as to the older Spica class. Rb08 served on as the missiles were transferred to the heavy missile batteries of the Costal Artillery where they remained until 1995.

I do know that Poland indeed likes this missile a lot - and we use both RBS 15 Mk.3 and NSM - though in different roles. It's certainly on the expensive side, but it has a large warhead and can be fired by basically anything that has a link to radar system that is compatible. And SAAB and others make sure that it is compatible with wide variety of systems. Location of launch site is quite independent from the radar and large warhead and very advanced guidance system make probability of hit quite high. Especially since against well defended target you will likely use the volley of 2-4 missiles approaching from different quadrants to the target. It also doesn't have problems using islands and other terrain features as cover, so the enemy that doesn't have AWACS will have little time to prepare for the attack. It's only issue performance wise is that it doesn't have very high speed. Though to use it against this missile you do have to detect it first and this is more tricky than the non-stealthy appearance of the missile suggests (unless again, you have AWACS in the air that's capable of either helping a plane or ship to launch a counter missile) - generally speaking detecting stuff over the water if the sea isn't super calm is much more difficult than people realize. Most ships that I know go with something like 4+4, 4+8 or even 8+8 or 8+16 configurations. That gives them ability to attack with high probability of hit at least 2 targets that are capable of defending themselves at the same time. Or one target that is very well defended and needs to be hit (and when that missile hits it does substantial damage). The 4+4 configuration simply means that ship carries 4 pods ready for launch and 4 for reload, which can be moderately fast (takes a good crew at most 15 minutes - real time is classified AFAIK). I do remember that some Polish ships did carry 4+8 for 2 full reloads. But some things changed when switching from Mk 2 to Mk 3, so I'm no longer certain. I do know that usually they go with 4+4 though, because we have limited number of missiles and reloading twice is considered "unlikely". And I've also seen containers being stored in such a way that they certainly looked like they could fire "reloads" at the same time as regular missiles. But I have no idea how "official" that was. But since couple of years ago our military journals did talk about it, I don't consider it something that is classified. Just something that navy doesn't confirm or maybe did as a "fake-out" to bamboozle people ;)

Hey thanks for that info! It's something I've ways been confused about. If matisimus is right and it's not uncommon for 20 missiles to get shot down. Why does my countries big ships just have 8 mounted on top? Would it need a lot more to take out one other surface combatant?
@jannegrey19 күн бұрын
@@dan7564 Depends - what kind of missiles? RBS 15 Mk.3? No probably not, since you can plan a route in such a way that each will attack from different quadrant at the same time. This isn't very easy to answer, but 20 missiles is usually for something like high flying Russian missiles that even if they do not fly very high - it's much higher than 5 meters and one of them pops up to have you on the radar. Also depends what kind of defense system you use. For RBS 15 Mk.3 to be ineffective, you'd have to use CIWS and probably something like short range anti missiles (RIM-116) AND have radars capable of observing every quadrant of the ship independently and even then the system (RBS 15 Mk.3) has a decent chance that one of them will manage to get through. That's a discussion honestly for a separate video, because that's a big topic.
@TzunSu13 күн бұрын
@@dan7564 Swedish doctrine is to fire 2 missiles at large surface targets, with the expectation that it will lead to a sinking, that's how reliable they are. We don't really have any good indications for how well anti-missile countermeasures work against modern ASMs, because except for the cruiser Moskva being sunk by a Ukrainian ASM, none have been fired in anger. And none of those missiles were hit at all.

The RBS 15 from Sweden sounds like it is exactly what the Ukraine need to see about getting either buying them from Sweden or being able to figure out a way how to build them, if Ukraine can get a couple of older ships not real big ones but big enough to have batteries of the RBS 15 from Sweden my belief is that they could tear up even more of the Russian fleet then they already have they also could use these to hit targets inside Russia, like oil refineries storage weapons storage ammunition storage, and chiefly the kirch bridge in Crimea. If Ukraine can get some of these and they can be airborne launched, they would be a lot better than glide bombs, one of the best use I could see for these when the Russian army gets into an assembly area before an attack they're launched to decimate the Russian army that's in that assembly area to get ready for the attack that would play hell with the Russian military and North Korean forces in Russia right now.

The tent was put up by ordinary conscripts so there were not so much consideration had, as to where in relation to the robot it was raised. Go figure... So when the test took place... the booster rockets, well the exhaust from the booster rockets, had an undesired impact on the tent, the equipment, and antennas. The result was a group of high ranking officers, and technicians, helplessly seeing the radar track of the now unguided robot, heading towards the Gulf of Finland... not an ideal track during the cold war, as it were.

The joke in the club is that we just need some ordinance to clean up the black sea fleet back in 2022

My favorite anti-ship missile is the Hsiung Feng III. There's not a whole lot of info out there, but it's definitely capable of hitting a target as small as a fishing boat and its ramjet propulsion seems to make it the fastest anti-ship missile ever. It's interesting to me as it's clearly developed without Moskit or Oniks roots, having rectilinear intake geometry like Meteor but with intake splitter plates. Given Western disinterest in Mach 3+ class anti-surface missile technology, it was a remarkably ambitious development project for Taiwan to even attempt. The end result is a nightmare for Chinese naval invasion plans. It forces PLAN ships to try and scan at a fast rate for fast missiles, which makes their radar coverage less effective against the (more numerous) slower/cheaper anti-ship missiles. These slower/cheaper anti-ship missiles can be accompanied with swarms of MALD decoys - a tactic which has been found effective against Russian air defense systems. The point is - this mix of threats is a lot more difficult for the PLAN to deal with than one or the other.

An undisclosed number of RBS15 were sent from Sweden to Ukraine in the beginning of the full scale invasion, when an amphibious assault on Odesa was feared. And Denmark sent Harpoon's. Later, when it wasn't clear what exactly sunk the Moskva, I kind of hoped it was some Swedish RBS15. (As I'm Swedish.) BUT the fact that it was two domestically Ukranian produced Neptune missiles, actually is of course even better!

Man I love the videos I know you have mentioned wondering what could help the channel, I'm no expert but I think that having content that's military adjacent may help I'd suggest doing a tank review on a sci Fi tank or something Review the 40k tanks like you would review a tank on this channel with an eye on how it is used and would perform in a real world military I watch a few channels that do historical based battle analysis of ancient Rome and the like but every now and then pull out a video on how tyranids invade planets (such as Invicta) and it seems like a great way to pull in people with an interest in the topic but are not searching for it explicitly I discovered this channel from googling what I should do to prepare to join the Canadian Reserves which I can't imagine being a common KZbin search term so having a few vids popup in a Star wars or 40k fans searches may help

barge mounts are one possibility as they can shift positions with an outboard motor pair, with the right camo setup and position changes on a random schedule serious headache for any attack force.

Ask the USN... When they tested it (mk2 or3) it was supposed to hit an old cruiser first and then other missiles would hit it too and eventually it would sink. RBS15 cut the cruiser in 2. BUT it has it's biggest advantages in costal warfare. On open sea other platforms are just as good.

It would be good to know how it stacks up to other similar missiles, range, speed, counter measures and other stats. Price is often overlooked, but very important.

When i used to work on the MK13 missile system, on the USS DeWert FFG 45, when doing a daily mag temp, we would walk in the mag ring and hug a Harpoon but not the SM1s lol

Robot 04 was the first anti-ship missil. It hade an advance guiding system with a low altitude approach too be increased to about 400 m in about 1 to 2 km from the targer area. Then it would initate its radar and select a target and dive to about 20 m above ❤the ship where it detonate a shaped-carge downwards itto the ship.

It is a system particularly usefull in the Baltic where it will lend the firepower of a battleship to a corvette. It is also quite capable of taking out enemy command nodes - the price is about 1mio EUR a piece. The problem with the Harpoon is its lack of range. Going back to WW2 they also had seaskimming missiles in the form of torpedo bombers and the "ballistic" drooping fire was the Dauntless. But to truly service a target you need to have BOTH in the quiver. Making short range air defence particularly difficult. Just look at the AAA on the Yamamoto in WW2. Problem was the Mk-13 american torpedo: The bloody thing DID NOT WORK! The Harpoon is providing excellent service in Ukraine - keeping the Russian fleet off-off-shore. They are not fired much, but achieves its objective - keeping the russians in port. The main problem for the swedish arms industry is their limited production runs - that is being corrected with large orders and cheap financing.

Very expensive, and the main thing - how many can they produce ?... Cuz in a shooting war, all NATO in Europe will run out of missiles in 2 days :p
