Ed Reid that's genius!!! I feel the same way. There doesn't seem to be anything Miss Phyllis can't do if she puts her mind to it.. And she seems to love fixing meals for folks. I can picture a beautifully decorated, inviting and comfortable bed and breakfast. I would definitely stay there on my trips to SC, as my mother lives there and I really should get out that way to visit her more often. I live in Michigan. Anyway, a bed and breakfast would do very well I believe with Phyllis as the host!

I think jell-o desserts are great. They are light and sweet and fruity and delicious. Especially in the summer time. I admit that I don't make them like I used to when the kids were at home and small....they really liked jell-o. I think it needs to make a come back and I think I should make some tomorrow!!! Thanks for reminding us of the good stuff!!! Love the video.

So glad you shared this video ! My mother made this in the 60's . She passed away six years ago and I had not been able to find her recipe for this. She called it a five cup congealed salad . Her fifth ingredient was shredded cheddar cheese on top. Thanks so much , take care and God Bless both you and your husband.

Growing up in the 1950s & 1960s my mother , born in 1917, made aJello dessert, including this one , at least once each week. It is my opinion that she and many other southern women of her age, perhaps subconsciously, considered Jello to be a benchmark of gracious living. She and thousands like her grew up in rural Louisiana and Texas without electricity which I guess finally arrived in the mid to late years of the Depression. Hence, once wired into the grid you and your family had "arrived" and the serving of Jello dishes was a visible, tangible reminder of the wonders of electric refrigeration.Just my opinion based on family history before I was born .
@PhyllisStokes
@PhyllisStokes 7 жыл бұрын
I think electricity didn't come to rural areas until the late 40's and early 50's. They did have ice boxes and the ice man came once a week with a large chunk of ice that went in the top of the ice box, it keep everything cold down below. I think they had electricity before refrigerators were widely available. I remember the one light bulb hanging down in the middle of the room and it had a little chain they would pull to turn it on.

Phyllis Stokes I remember the dry ice. As a child we'd visit my grandmother in Newbwerry (up your way) and we stopped by the country store and bought a block of dry ice. I remember because I was intrigued by it, curious. We only got it when we visited a couple times a year.

I remember when I was a little kid playing at the park and the ice cream truck would come up. I would always buy the orange push-up pop. Loved it. Also orange and vanilla reminds me of days at the Jersey shore where we would always get the orange vanilla swirl ice cream cone on the point Pleasant boardwalk. We would eat it while watching the fireworks after sunset. To me this is the taste of summer.

Hello Phillis, I must tell you what happened to me, I am your neighbor over in York county, SC. I did not have a blender, but I do have a food processor so I made the orange jello, and put the cream cheese in the processor, and poured the jello in. Well it was too much liquid and the jello started leaking out the bottom, what a conundrum, I quickly poured all the stuff into a bowl, and grabbed my immersion blender ( lovingly referred to as "the boat motor") it worked just fine! And we had it tonight for dessert. Sparky, my hubby loved it! Thank you so much for your video's, I just found you and have spent th weekend catching up on your videos. Take care and see you around the IPad!

Since she passed away nine years ago I haven't had a taste of a good bread pudding. Well, for supper tonight we did! My son and daughter-in-law loved it but said they'd like it even better with chocolate chips.....no, my husband and I love it with the dark raisins so that is how I'm making it! I love chocolate too but not in bread pudding. Thank you for sharing good recipes with common easy to find ingredients Phyllis :)

How neat to get to see Dr. Stokes again! Please thank him for me for making a guest appearance. Can't wait to make this for hubby, I know he will be pleased with it. Thank you Ms. Phyllis! Edit: I've just put this together and into the fridge to chill. Had to make a few substitutions: Neufchatel cheese for regular cream cheese, a 4 oz can of mandarins because that's what I had, used the juice of the mandarins as part of the jello liquid, instead of pineapple I minced up a fresh nectarine because hubby doesn't care for pineapple. I did whiz it in the Vitamix because my backup blender is too far buried downstairs to be easily accessible. It is chilling now and will be a lovely dessert for us tomorrow!

This reminds me of a dessert I made "back in the day" that was very similar. To get my kids to eat yogurt I would make the jello in the same way, but then add plain yogurt (I'm not sure they did vanilla yet) in the blender instead of cream cheese. I would blend it up then pour it into parfait glasses or a similar fancy dessert dish with height. When set the jello would separate into 2 parts, 1 regular jello part, then a creamy foamy jelled part on top. then i would put whipped cream on top. For strawberry jello I would use strawberry yogurt, for blue jello I would use blueberry yogurt etc. Plain yogurt worked with everything. There was a product Jello put out called Jello123. This did the same thing.

If I was I'll and needed a nurse, I would want Miss Phyllis taking care of me. She seems so gentle and caring. Just watching and listening to her work is so relaxing and I know she lowers my blood pressure.

Hey Phyllis, I have been following your blog for only a few weeks! And I am hooked. When I saw you referring to recipes that your mom made, I was hooked. I wanted to ask on the topic of Jell-o. Do you remember a Jell-o chiffon dessert, from the 1950-60's. It may have been a mix. But my husband of almost 42 years, brings it up all the time. I would love to surprise him with it. Maybe this one of yours could be it. Give Mr. Bucky a big hug from me. I love your southern accents. And watch you blogs all the time. I have alot to catch up with!
