Is this the real BUDWEISER? - Czech Budweiser Budvar
This story is going on for more that 100 years - which Budweiser is the "real" one. Is it the Lager from the czech city of Budweis or the Anhaeuser Bush Version from St.Louis? Let me take you on a weird journey and get some facts on where we can buy which "Budweiser".
Bought at my local supermarkt in Vienna.
Prost, Cheers & Ahoi!

Pilsner - "Plzeň" (in german language Pilsen) and Budweiser - "Budějovice" (in german language Budweis) are original Czech towns/beers. The city of Budějovice was founded in 1265, i.e. 227 years before Christopher Columbus discovered the American continent. You don't need any further evidence that Budweiser is Czech. period.

After the fall of Iron curtain, the Anheuser-Busch and Budvar started series of legal challenges all over the world in order to establish who has the right to the name. In US, the Budvar was handled the short end of the stick, in Europe it was usually the other way round. Inerestingly, in the UK the judge ruled that both can be sold as the consumer can clearly taste the difference.

The thing about the "original" Budweiser is complex but at the same time so very easy. The name itself tells it all. The name _"Budweiser"_ is actualy a german name (in central Europe was strong influence of german language for centuries) and in translation it means _"from Budweis"._ So there it is, in the name itself. For something to be called "from Budweis" it needs to originate from town Budweis, not from St. Louis. And it happens this town is located in Czech Republic. The local tradition of making beer is old almost as the town itself, more than 750 years.

Yea the beer is no longer priced like that here, but it's still quite cheap, sometimes going for as little as 50 cents in a supermarket when on sale. Even the better brands you can most of the time get for under one dollar per 0.5l in a store in a can/bottle. Tap beer is more expensive, usually around $1.50 - $2.50 but the higher of those would be considered on the more expensive side. I've been to pubs with quite good beer on tap for just over a dollar.

Budvar 12° is very dangerous. Us Czechs, we all know the curse of drinking it. It goes down very easily, it is stronger but it takes a while to kick in - you can down 4 before you realize how strong it is. Also, there is a saying (kinda subjective, but somewhat true for everyone) that if you get drunk from Budvar 12, you will have a huge headache the next morning. Personally, Budvar 12° is decent compared to Budvar 10°, which is very watery and not too enjoyable. And I am saying this as a person that comes from Budweis. The obvious best beer from Budvar is their Kroužek, but it is a beer with live cultures (there is extra yeast added in a later stage) which means it can go bad if not handled properly. Hence it is only available to Budvar trusted pubs and those are only in the Czech Republic.

In USA, Czech Budweiser is called Czechvar. I did a blind side-by-side taste test between Czechvar and American Budweiser. I had to keep my eyes closed because I can tell them apart just by sight alone: Czechvar is darker. Anyway, there is a clear difference in taste between the two. And Czechvar tastes much better. I actually did numerous blind side-by-side comparisons of beers. Generally speaking, European pale lagers mop up the floor with American adjunct lagers. The German Helles, Czech lagers & pilsners, Kronenbourg 1664 from France, Estrella Galicia from Spain, Harp Lager from Ireland, Carlsberg from Denmark, Grolsch from Netherlands, and even Stella Artois from Belgium beat Budweiser (American), Miller High Life, Coors, Pabst, and Old Milwaukee. Of those American beers listed, Pabst is the best. Some other European pale lagers that I found were very good were Okocim, Żywiec, and Tyskie from Poland. I'm headed to Germany in September. While there, I might do blind taste tests of helles from the "Munich Six": Hofbräu, Paulaner, Spaten, Augustiner, Franziskaner, Hacker-Pschorr, and Löwenbräu. Some of these are available in the USA, and I already compared them: Hofbräu beats Paulaner and Spaten. Augustiner Edelstoff and Hofbräu were very close, but Edelstoff edged it out. Hacker-Pschorr and Hofbräu are about equal.

Great explanation of the gravity tradition of Czech beers! That's exactly how we think about it, even though it's really not exact (I bet you could find a 10% gravity beer that had a higher ABV than a different 12% gravity beer). We say it in degrees much more often than percent though - if you say "10% gravity", a typical Czech doesn't know what that means, but if you say "10 degrees", everyone knows what you're talking about. Also, the legal dispute really highlights the differences between EU and USA in food labeling. In the USA, Anheuser-Busch launched the brand and product named "budweiser" first, so obviously they have the right to use that name. In the EU, we consider that the german word "budweiser" literally means "from Budweis/Budějovice", so obviously the brewery located in České Budějovice has the right to use that name.

Bud definitely uses rice. It says so on the label. Apparently, it was the only way to make a clear, light colored, “German looking” lager using the barley available in the US at the time. I would love to try a real Budweiser.

I was informed about this situation back in 1993 when I used to drink American Budwieser. As I am told the namesake was stolen. I believe the weight of proof is obvious enough and the Czech people are not exactly dying because Americans are drinking a spoof off their original. I think it is political. The lesson -- nothing is better than the original.

The story I heard was that Budweiser was the German name for a style of beer associated with České Budějovice. Immigrants to America tried to copy the style and Adolphus Busch was the first to brand the beer, so the Americans have a point in terms of who was first to use the name "Budweiser". But, then the US version was weak in flavour and clarity, and was sold to people who didn't know their beers. Then prohibition compounded that. The barley wasn't the same as in Europe, so they had to clarify it (with rice etc). It has to be served chilled to be enjoyed at all. But it's just not up to the job. We call it cat's piss here in the UK. Not really a beer. It's a lager, spoken with a sneer. Give me the Czech version any day - it's lovely beer!

actually budweiser mean just "from Budějovic" and obviously that beer is older since budějovice was founder in 13th century, budvar can use budweiser because 1. it is actually a beer made from budějovice 2.the city of budějovice gave permission to budvar to use the name Budweiser meanwhile the american one does not have the permission so legally they shouldn't be able to use it at all. american budweise shouldn't be able to use that name since: 1. it wasn't made in budějovice (apparently bought brewery there but they didn't change the recipe so same piss water) 2. they did not get permission from the city to use that name effectively stealing the name. so in the end czech budweiser is older and used that name for way longer but only the trademark is not older.

"Bud" beer from Anheuser-Busch cannot normally be bought in stores in the Czech Republic, only through specialized e-shops importing goods from the USA. I will just add that the second Brewery in České Budějovice - Samson was bought in 2014 by the Anheuser-Busch group, but this does not affect the trademarks, the course of the court case between Budějovice Budvar and Anhauser Busch.

Budweiser in the US IS a rice beer. They have to use rice to clarify it, otherwise the six-row barley would make the beer cloudy. Brewers in the United States who were making Pilsner style beer have to use something to clarify beer; corn (maize) was used by some and AB decided to use rice, which can be grown in North America. Europeans all tell me that there are no bad Czechs.

As has been said, Budweiser means from Budějovice, that is, from České Budějovice. What do the Americans (and not the Brazilians or Argentinians :-D) want to argue about? If they produced a beer called NEWYORKER in New York (is that where the clothing brand name comes from? And is it made in New York?), it probably wouldn't occur to anyone here to start brewing this beer and passing it off as our own. Well, the USA :-D It's on another level!

Žatec is being pronounced as "Zhatets" ; the degrees are are only written as 10° or 12° in the Czech Republic, no percentage symbol related to that although about alcohol level, Czech 10° has about 4% ; 12° has typically 5% and more - so quite easy compared to , say, Belgian beers

For hops, you probably meant Zatec, /pronounce soft zattets/. My understanding is that Americans got a license to brew Budweiser sometime in 1930's, but only for USA. However their expansion lead to exports abroad. After the fall of communism, he Czech government went to courts to reclaim its rights, but could not financially compete with rich concern Anheuser Busch, moreover, they were allegedly threatened with sanctions against hops exports, so they settled for exports into USA under Czechvar, in the Czech republic its is Budvar and in some countries it is Budweiser Czech produced. My experience is that the Czech version (similar to many European lagers) has "body", while the American (as other American beers) one is watery, empty.

I have worked for Budvar brewery so i know whole real story why americans claim Budweiser. One of immigrants started brewing beer in USA and was selling it under name Budweiser, because it was well known even back then for most of other european immigrants. Nice marketing touch, but... When czech company figured this out, there were multiple lawsuits and result was US Budweiser was left on american market and origina Budweiser had to be sold there under other name. It is really wierd, we can only discuss if it was corruption, or something about historical values (since american have historical buildings 200 years younger than my previous, nonhistorical house and so on). Anyway, history is on our side, for few hunderd years. It was called "The Beer of Kings" back in the days (about hundred years after your continent was found) , since it was good enough for king and he was really drinking it. In medival times it was real honor that you could brew beer and from far not all cities were allowed to do so. Fun fact is, you can buy SAME czech Budweiser all around the word, nothing like Bud is doing (several recieps for different countries). Reason is, czech Budweiser is joining only one competition of breweries and that is worldwide thing. So referees can buy beer in any city all around the world and company have no control about beer quality, like they might have in other competitions. We can say only real competition. I also spoke with main brewer of Budvar, Aleš Dvořák, about czech Budweiser and it is amazing to know this beer taste still same for many many years, basicaly same as you would get in 1795 a.d.. There is plenty of new technologies, but always same result, since reciep is adapted to have same result as with previous technology. Not 100% tho, since pasterization is involed in proces and there is not much they can do about it. So they sell nonpasterised beer in few shops and if you would taste nonpasterised, fresh beer from that giant tank, you would be amazed. So rich flavour....yet hygiene rules are rules and they have to obey them like all breweries around the world. Cheers!
