Chicken wings are a really popular snack and they seem to be a good choice because they give you very little meat. The truth is, a serving of 8 chicken wings with dipping sauce is comparable to 2 medium orders of French fries and a can of soda!

I guess I wasn’t aware that all chicken wings were deep fried and served a soda and with a side of sugary barbecue sauce. Very misleading

I found wild variations in calorie estimations for wings. I finally stumbled upon the USDA official guideline for drumettes. I'm sure the wing itself varies slightly but their only wing listing included buffalo sauce. I parboiled my wings for 10 minutes which removes some fat. Then baked on a rack for about 35 minutes flipping once. At the end, much of the fat had rendered into the sheet pan beneath the rack. So while the USDA doesn't know my three tips for fat reduction (boil, then bake, and bake on elevated rack). They still say each 100 grams of drumettes has 188 calories. So for me, 16 wings was 708 grams (weighted raw with wing tips removed). Then my buffalo sauce which is 4 Tbsp of butter, 6 Tbsp of Franks Original Hot Sauce, 1/2 tsp cayenne, and 1/2 tsp of Worcestershire (although I only used 18% of that on my wings (saved the rest for later). And a light application of blue cheese which was only 15 grams (or 1 Tbsp)...these 8 wings (I ate 8 and saved 8 for later) with everything came to 803 calories. No breading. Light use of sauces. Baked not fried. I know my actual amount was less due to the rendered fat that I didn't eat. But that is a ton of calories for a baked wing with no rub, no baking powder, no breading, no oil. Having a food scale and a nutrition tracker that gives accurate information is key. I will say, after eating 8 wings, it felt like a snack. If you are on a 2,000 calorie a day plan, then this little snack while delicious is over 40% of your daily caloric intake. Yikes. Oh well, I tried my best to make it low calorie. Anyone though who thinks you can eat 10 wings with a moderate amount of some sauce without blowing past 800 calories is kidding themselves. For example, the biggest wing chain in the nation shows their flavored wings (some dry rub, some wet) range from 90 calories each to 330 calories each. The average being about 200 calories per drumette/flat. So eat 10 of those babies with sauce and you are at 2,000 calories. If you eat or drink a single additional calorie in the day after that meal, you are gaining weight.

You assume to much. You can make them healthy and skip the sauce. Someone who is conscience of their health is not going to have the sauce with sugar and order them deep fried. You can bake them in your oven. There are so many benefits to a chicken wing. Protein is vital for preventing muscle breakdown as we age. I agree fried chicken wings are very bad for someone, however, it is all in how you cook them that matters.

I went on a diet eating 3 times a week. 12 chicken wings with veggies on one meal. I lost 8 kilos in 2 weeks it was insane.

airfry your chicken wings without any breading. No need of oil as wings have fat with the skin. Dip in ranch. most hot sauces are low calorie. Atleast texasPete and Melinda's ghost pepper wing sauce are!!

i love chicken wings i used to eat them before a lot but now thanks to keeping in mind this break down of what's in it I will be easier to avoid it in the future

If you only eat 2×s a day then you could get away with those calories. Unless your 2nd meal is like 800 calories or more If you don't work out. Try keto. Easiest diet ever. If you have a little self control.

Meat fat is necessary to good health. Forget the sauce (or make your own low or no sugar sauce), the sugar in it will make you fat. Bake your wings with a dribble of olive oil on a rack in the oven and they will be crispy (30 minutes at 400F, turn 30 more minutes), no rancid canola or corn oil need to fry them. Dietitians need to learn the updated info on good fat vs bad fat and stop spreading this misinformation.
