Young and naive people hear the “travel for free” but don’t stop to think “is it really as free as I think it is”. Not knocking anybody’s hustle but it’s best for them to be aware prior to diving headfirst into the points and miles game

Great breakdown of spend/points. Don't forget, though, that if you book flights and hotel with points, and then us the USBAR RTR for everything else, you could actually travel for free.
@notNaB20244 ай бұрын
The entire "travel points game" is very interesting psychologically. Everyone thinks of it slightly differently and I think at the end of the day it makes us all feel "cool" to say that we use points to travel as if we are some important folks with "fancy" metal credit cards. I understand how "easily" it can be to open cards left and right and get all these 120K sign up points for each card, but who is spending $4K or $8K in 3 months just to get points. It is almost as if we all want the points, so we convince ourselves that over spending is okay for some "free" dream vacation that realistically never happens the way KZbinrs show them to be. Idk. Just my take. Great for those of you who do it.
@SpencerJohnsonOfficial4 ай бұрын
I completely agree! It's very interesting psychologically. I do want to touch on just one thing here though.. if you're spending $8k in 3 months JUST to get points, you're doing it wrong. Every dollar put on a credit card should be money you would've spent either way, and that's why the points are earned for free. As I always preach, if you overspend to play the credit card game, you've already lost.

Love the CSR, it's the only card we use when traveling, 3x on all expenses, super easy to use/redeem, no foreign transaction fees, keeps things simple. It's underrated imo. People also need to realize that he gets most of his points through referrals and SUBS. It will take the average person a long time to get 200k points through organic spend. At $6k/mo averaging 1.5x that's nearly 2 years of spend. Spend responsibly, never pay interest. Also using business cards for personal expenses is against their terms of service... be careful.
@soapa42794 ай бұрын
I agree it will take the average person a long time to get 200K. I would consider my household expenses higher than average, and we're only on track to make about 130-150K a year in UR points. An entire year compared to a few months to even match one SUB on the CIP. And that includes me booking a lot of vacations out of pocket. That's why churners preach the only way to really stack a crap ton of points quickly is to churn churn churn.
@SpencerJohnsonOfficial4 ай бұрын
It's such a solid card for me personally! As for accumulating 200k points, referrals definitely help out a ton in that and I'm completely transparent with those numbers. However, from welcome bonuses alone on my Chase cards this year I've earned 210k points (not to mention another 225k+ from other welcome offers) so those numbers are definitely doable! You just have to plan accordingly. Thank you for your comment here!

If you stay 20 nights at Hyatt hotels, you can get two Club access awards. I stayed at the Grand Hyatt Kauai using those Club passes and we were able to use it for breakfast and snacks, which helps. Or you have a friend that can gift you a pass. Also, eating in the area and not at the resort can be a lot cheaper. I think you would find cheaper costs overall if you did beach vacations in Mexico. For example all-inclusive resorts. I stayed at the Hyatt ziva Puerto Vallarta for 20,000 points a night and that covered food and hotel. I think now it's up to 25 k.

Nice video. Another point I consider if the annuals fees I pay for my cards minus the offsets for the effective card cost. Most can come out ahead of the card cost but if the effective card cost is 100 bucks a year and since I am team travel I factor it in. For example effective card cost divided by number of trips per yr is the cost of the game to play to unlock all the points and value. Just a thought
@diegogarciadiego14 ай бұрын
Hey Spencer. Nice video, but the math is a little off. Even if you’re on team travel, you have to discount the value of the points you redeemed (i.e. count them towards the cost of travel). If you spend $750 plus 200,000 points, the “real” cost of travel is around $2,750 even if you’re not planning to cash those points. Still a way better option than paying cash, but the $750 is not the only cost incurred even if it’s the only cash lit of pocket. Keep up the good work!
@yankeeman3113 ай бұрын
Late to the party but appreciate this video as a travel enthusiast myself. But I travel a lot differently than you lol. That's not a knock, it's just different styles. Im a very spur of the moment traveler which makes it harder to commit to an airline/hotel rewards program. Examples. I travel to Southeast Asia almost yearly now, very hard to use CCs on the ground there but I try to stock up on flight/lodging bookings. But the American airlines/hotels are just bad deals over there to stay loyal to one brand. Even in Europe this summer I found that to be the case. Saved $200-300 taking an airline I've never flown before compared to one I fly more commonly. Thats just me though. Everyone has different experiences and expenses in life. If anything I'm talking myself into trying to increase my natural expense for something like the CSR haha. Great content man hope you enjoyed the Bahamas. +1 subscriber

For those on team cash back, you're 100% right! But speaking as someone on team travel, these points are a part of my "travel fund" meaning that I don't associate a dollar amount to them until I redeem them for a trip. The points still have an opportunity cost by the definition of the word, but I don't ever subtract that from the value my points gave me since it’s not a hard cost. Another way to think about this is that I consider my points to be more of a coupon or discount than actual currency, hence why I never consider the cash value of them. Hopefully that makes sense!

There’s a niche case where free travel is actually free: my parents live in India, and I like to visit them at least once a year. A round trip economy flight could easily cost me 150k points, but there’s no price for visiting loved ones and having home cooked food. Daily expenses are also much lower (my Uber rides in India cost about $2 on average, for example). If I were to factor this all in, spending those points and saving money for 3-4 weeks at home makes me feel SO much better about what would otherwise be a very expensive trip to see my family.
