As you mentioned what we as professionals in the cybersecurity world do does have real life consequences. I forget what year it was but recently there was a woman in Germany that was being brought to a hospital for some heart issue and the nearest hospital was having a ransomware attack. She had to be rerouted to a hospital further away which delayed her treatment by an hour and she ended up dying. There was also the water treatment plant in Florida where some attacker tried to turn up a certain chemical in the water to a dangerous level. If that attack went unnoticed and the safety systems didn't alert anybody then people could have been hurt or killed. The toll is not only in money but of time, productivity, access to critical infrastructure, and yes, even people's lives. What we do is important and I'm glad we are able to do it.

I have only rudimentary understanding of Cyber Security, but while I worked in the area(lowest level), I understood couple of things: 1. Many people in the area know little to nothing about Cyber Security or any areas that are the basics of it - about OS, networking, Web, Injections, Fishing, Social engineering, scripts, etc. 2. Companies don't want to invest into it - they want the bare minimum and cheapest coverage, that would only tick the boxes in front of their clients or Law enforcement.

The problem is that many companies keep secure data on drives connected to the web. Microsoft demanding one sign on with a Microsoft account to use a GUI is an example of computers being preset for invasion. The constant request by companies to use personal information adds to insecurity.
