You should have compared a Guild D-55 with the D-28 Authentic. That would be a real competition.

I disagree with the comment at 5:33. The guitar that costs $7k is made because there's a _demand_ for it. I'm pretty sure it doesn't matter to CFMartin whether the buyer is a seasoned pro, or a beginner who's won the lottery.

The D-28 sounds like a grand piano and the Guild sounds like an A+ for a beginner guitar. It's amazing how great beginner guitars are today compared to just a few years ago. I have a 1963 D-28 (Brazilian rosewood) that my Dad bought new in my picture.

Laminated sides is a good thing, not a bad thing, as long as it's a quality lamination, meaning no flimsy wood (or wood substitute) that just has pretty veneer laminated to it. It's always fun to hear how guitar reviewers justify the price of an $8,000 guitar compared to a $399 guitar ... pop, balance, fullness, etc. Sure, I have no doubt the Martin sounds better to an educated ear, and is built better than the Guild. But there's a lot of that Martin pomposity built into that $8,000 price tag.

It’s also fun to hear the sour grapes of someone with a $400 guitar telling himself that good guitars aren’t worth it.
@richardsmith9615
@richardsmith9615 Ай бұрын
@@G_Demolished OP comment wasn't sour grapes at all. The point about Lamination is absolutely correct. The tonal difference between a Veneered mahogany side and a solid mahogany side is imperceptible if the veneered sides are not using some epoxy/resin nonsense or plywood. Much of the cost of an expensive guitar (And this 100% applies to Electric guitars too) is in artistic choices such as bindings, inlays, figured woods and boutique pickups. All of which have negligible impacts on tone compared to even simple things like Saddle materials, Tremolo block sizes etc. Cosmetically, there is an argument in favour of paying such high prices for guitars, but many people think that the justification is tonal or in terms of playability, but it rarely is the case. It's more for aesthetics as art pieces than playable instruments. And that's fine. But snobbery is an ugly trait.

@@richardsmith9615 If you think any $400 guitar sounds as good as a standard series Martin, your ears are 💩 too. This is not snobbery. This is reality.

@richardsmith9615 Ай бұрын
@@G_Demolished It's a reality based only in confirmation bias. You probably wouldn't be able to discern a Martin from a midrange Tanglewood in the context of a mix, for starters. But even in the context of a solo acoustic track, the only indicator is your affinity for the sound you already know of a Martin itself. Whether it is better is entirely subjective, far more important is the player.

This Guild may be the biggest sleeper out there. I own a great Taylor. Have owned great Martins, pre Bedell Breedloves, a pre Breedlove Badell all solid spruce rosewood Dreadnought, and frankly, once I set up the Guild with Martin Monels, it has been more stable than Martins. It is easy to play, maybe easiest left of Ovation or Taylor. Yes, a little more compression than an all solid body, but with the right strings, it sounds pretty damn good. I would gig this with a Baggs pickup anytime, anywhere. That doesn't take anything away from Martin. A Ferrari runs amazing when it's tuned, but a Toyota Highlander is a great car to be in without any headaches.

While helping a friend buy a first guitar, the Yamaha FS800 was hands-down the best bang for the buck - and closer to $200, better than many that were twice as much. Just sayin'. 36th subscriber LIKE; 291st view. This is the best one of your video today... so far.

I bought one 6 months ago (187.00 plus tax)....I refret a lot.....my FS800 has the best neck I've seen in 30 years...(better then most 7k Martins) Can tune down a whole step without adjusting the truss rod. Plays whole step down, 1/2 step down, or standard tuning doing nothing to it. 25 inch scale plays like butter. I use it when my old hand is acking. I put mediums on it and keep it tuned down a whole step....it loves the mediums. I tune it down to save the top....occasionally tune it up to standard to perform and then back to whole step down when it's in the rack. Put a "double" go Trans acoustic magnetic pickup on it for 100.00 (Walmart). About 300.00 cheaper then a trans acoustic FS model. (Reverb and chorus is fine...delay sucks...love the magnetic PU's EQ settings to tame the bass of the FS800)...the chinese yamaha's are hit or miss...be patient and play a mess and you can get a monster if you play 10 or so.

If you’re playing in tune, it’s going to sound good on any guitar. How they play and the tones of individual instruments is the difference between them. Beginning players can keep that in mind. Pick a guitar that feels good in your hands 1st. And a sound that pleases your ear. Then learn to play it.

There’s something subjective about “tone”. I found, fell in love with, sold my Taylor for, and bought a Martin Custom shop dread with tiger wood back/sides, maple binding and adi top. You can not only hear the difference in a high end guitar but also you feel it. Mine was far less than the D-28 featured in this vid but works for me. It hung on the shop wall for years, got played and put back when people saw the tag…marked down a dozen times as it is something of a unicorn guitar looking for a unicorn to play it.

Yay!!! What do I win? I could finally hear the difference! I'm positive that most of the difference is lost in compression. I'm listening on audiophile speakers and a high quality AV receiver but my hearing is horrible. The great takeaway is what you can get for $400. In cars this is comparable to a $20,000 economy car VS $320,000 luxury car... $8,000 is a chunk of change, but if that's what you want it's not out of reach for many people. I payed $250 for a used Yamaha FG450SA in 1997 just to get a solid top. Interesting that's about $450 in today's dollars... I always enjoy your videos and have to give my never to be humble opinion....

Unfair comparison! Proves a point, though. The question is, what do you want to do with the guitar? Yes, I can hear a difference. Guild and Martin have different voices, and so do people. I don't like the neck on either of these. I had an Authentic the sounded great for my use, but traded it for a Custom Shop with a better (for me) neck profile. When my grandson wanted a "guitar like grandpa's" the Guild would come into view, especially in the J45 Gibson comparison. Thanks, Jeremy and John.

Great demo. I have a Martin D-28 Marquis (Adi top and East Indian rosewood back and sides), and you can definitely tell the difference between a premium Martin and an inexpensive entry level model. In this demo, you can hear the richer tone, better power, and sustain from the 1937 D-28 compared to the more muted, less defined clarity of the Guild.

That Guild sounds awesome for the price. A player of John’s caliber can make any guitar sound good, and can make a premium guitar sound… err… premium. The D28 has tons of volume and sustain, that’s where the Guild can’t compete. To me, when John played each guitar finger-style was when the tone was the closest.

Guys, good video and good comparison. Why does Emmanuel Pahud play a priceless gold flute? Because the better the workmanship and the better the materials an instrument is made from, the easier it is to play, the more responsive the instrument, and the richer the tones you're going to get from it. Can you play Poulenc on a cheap instrument? Possibly, but it'd be a much harder job and it wouldn't sound as good. I was blighted as a child by trying to learn guitar on cheap instruments with horrible action for years until I spent my first pay packet on a competent solid top Yamaha dreadnought which I still play today. Two messages to learners: spend whatever you can afford on a playable decent instrument and invest in lessons to iron out learning bad technique that will slow you down and hamper your playing.

Well, in person would be more obvious...but the sound is dramatically different to my ears. Not so much on the phone, but when I put my headset on. I bought a $300 - something - years ago. Could only re-sell it for $50. I've had well over 50 Martins now, and all but one I sold for a couple hundred to a couple thousand more than I bought them for- after getting to play them for a while! Not gonna happen with a cheap guitar. Constantly going out of tune, playability without hurting your fingers, hurting your ears with nonsense intonation, playing for others and having your voice and cheap guitar clashing...lots of reasons besides re-sale investment to pay for the best you can get.

I for one, having played electric and acoustic guitars for 53 years on and off, and personally strongly feel that MARTIN guitars, particularly the D-45, D-42, and D-41, as well as the D-35 and D-28 would have to be considered some of the finest guitars made, they have been around for many years. HOWEVER, I also personally think they are some of the most over-priced and over-rated guitars. I have similar feelings for the TAYLOR brand. I have also owned the GUILD D-50 as well as a GUILD JF-55 12 string. I personally feel the GUILD D-55 is one of the finest guitars on the Market. The bottom line for those starting out is to find a decent guitar made of quality tone woods one with bone nut and saddle and quality tuners, and one and one within your budget with a sound that YOU like and can live with. If you KNOW for certain that you will stick with guitar, buy a quality instrument that you can afford.A quality guitar's sound will always improve in sound as the woods age and cure if they are cared for well. Make sure you keep an acoustic guitar humidified well either in a humidified room or using a quality guitar humidifier. If not the wood will eventually crack and split and you'll have a worthless guitar and will have wasted your money. Keep your guitar in a quality case (humidify it also). There are MANY, MANY quality brand guitars. If you plan on becoming a professional player get the highest quality you can afford with the best sound YOU can live with. OLSEN guitars are around $20,000. A Martin D-45 varies but is around 6,000-10,000 dollars, Taylor's and Martins vary in price depending on the model and the wood used. Don't worry about where the guitar is made, U.S manufacturers, as well as Japan, South Korea, and other countries all make some quality brands. Depending on what you are willing to spend check out MARTIN, TAYLOR, GUILD, TAKAMINE, ZAGER , AND MANY MANY MORE , too many to name. Figure your budget and determine your level of commitment before you buy. It takes A LOT of practice to get satisfied. The string gage will make a big difference in the sound and ease of play, as well as the what the "action" or string height is set to. Make sure the Luthier knows how to set up the guitar professionally or you will be disappointed and get very sore fingers. These are just a few things to consider before purchasing. I prefer Rosewood back and side with a Sitka spruce top. Others may prefer Mahogany,Koa,Maple (back and sides) or others and each offers a different sound. Spruce or Cedar are best for tops. Research this and other information before buying.

Frankly gentlemen the Guild sound a little brighter and for the price I find it to be a good choice. You can change the Tone on the Guild by using different strings and there are several other things that will bring out the tonality. If C.F. Martin is paying you to do these comparisons you're earning your money. I would be happy with the Guild. I've played several EXPENSIVE Guitars and frankly I keep going back to the less expensive ones because I can get a better sound from them. Honestly.

Playing a 2020s Guild makes me pretty sad honestly. It's... basically a Washburn. They make higher priced guitars but quality stays pretty consistent...This used to be a legitimately great guitar maker. 25 years ago a video featuring a Guild and a Martin would have been "should you buy a Guild or a Martin" not a demo. And IMO their all Mahogany models from the 60s-70s are a really notable inflection point in NA guitars. If the story of Guild was an Epic poem it would be the kind where everyone dies in an ironic way. *I feel the same way but to a lesser extent about Taylor, if I'm honest. I'm shopping. I've pretty well resigned myself to spending 3-6k, but I'm sure willing to go cheap! The 2 That I was recommended to consider by someone who was very concerned that I consider a Taylor were LAUGHABLE compared to the Martin in the same price point.

Why not play a cheap Martin vs expensive one? I’ve always loved the sound of a Guild especially one made in Westerly, RI and it’s my absolute guitar of choice for sound. I’m not brand loyal, I’m sound loyal. That said, Put up a high end Guild against that Martin and let’s see the difference. I own a Taylor as well. Beautifully built guitar. I like all guitars period, but I’ll take the sound of a good guild everyday. Cheap vs cheap or expensive vs expensive but really? A cheap version of one brand vs an expensive version of a different brand? Exactly what was the purpose?

Our purpose was to compare the least expensive guitar in stock vs the most expensive guitar we had in stock at the time, for fun.

@@AcousticShoppe On a serious note....do you think the Guild D 140 you reviewed is worth the $750 street price at the time of this posting ?

I don't think we've done a review of the D140 yet, but we believe Guild provides a great value, especially if you're looking for that classic Folk/Rock look and sound.

It’s a shame all the sweet guitars even I saw fender runing over like 50 new guitars. I want a guitar so bad mine was stolen about 15 years ago. It’s just been one thing after another. I have not been able to get a nother. It seems as I’m trying to get one. One of my kids needs something. There all grown up. But they are struggling to pervide and raise there children. Even lost my oldest daughter to a car crash about 10 days before Easter. It’s just so hard but pow pow . Is always ready to help . One day God will come through. Prayer never hurts.

So all these guitar versus guitar videos are kind of bulshit if you ask me. I went to a local guitar shop fully intending to get a Martin. I played a Martin I didn't really like it play another didn't like it either. I went through all the guitars that would plug-in and there was 30 brands. The $400 Guild sounded the best and that's the one I bought and I really think that you have to try them to know you can't just say a Martin 1936 is going to be better than this. Because it might not. Of course a expensive guitar in general is going to be better than a cheap one but until you play them you don't really know

Terrible. You expect all the video waiting to hear the difference between the high level instead the cheap and never comes. A tricky video. I have seen excelente video reviews of guitars made in Russia, India... I would expect that if two american gentlemen promise me to listen the difference between two guitars i would lusten it. Don't ask. Greetings from Argentina.
