The Real Future of Virtual Reality

The future of Virtual Reality (VR) is not what most think. Virtual Reality gaming and the Metaverse get all the attention but there are lots of business startups using Virtual Reality and Augmented Reality (AR) to make technology better. Facebook's Metaverse has been tried before as Second Life, and most virtual reality games are gimmicky at best. We explore the real practical uses for VR, and how they can change our daily lives. Vicarious Surgical for example is a VR startup that is changing how doctors perform surgery.

You don't need a PC or console, the quest 2, a standalone headset makes up the majority of virtual reality users currently.

That’s true! It’s sort of all over the place. For example the VR game “Pavlov” is on the PC and is much better than Quest’s more limited version “Pavlov Shack.” Anything more graphically intensive or greater scope of game will require a dedicated PC or console. Stand-alone headsets are definitely the trend right now but hard to say where the market will gravitate towards.

Ever since i got my quest 2 i haven’t touched my PS4. VR has a lot to offer for free now like Pavlov gun raiders etc. not to mention entertainment like big screen where you can watch videos in a movie theatre sise screen. VR is still in its premature stage and yet it can do so much i feel like in 10 years everyone will be living a second life in VR

Thanks for contributing! VR certainly has a lot of potential. While this video doesn’t intend to suggest VR gaming is lacking, but rather there are so many other uses people don’t realize. Regarding your comment that in 10 years everyone will be living a second life in VR, is it because reality has worsened or because a second life is more entertaining is the real question…

@@RaisedMedia See my comment above about the concept of metaverse, as I understand it having worked for FB Reality Labs in data collection and hardware testing for all their underlying tech that goes into VR/XR/MR devices and software, and working in IT tech and living in Silicon Valley for 50 years. You're dead on about the non-gaming use cases such as medical / real-estate / training ect and SO much more. Just think about all that wrapped up and integrated into web 3.0. Web 3.0/ The Metaverse will not be built overnight by one company; it will evolve much like the internet we use today did (which I'm old enough to have watched, no indeed, helped support as it was literally being built right before my eyes) Hope that helps you see what all the big players like Meta/FB, Microsoft, Apple, AWS (really important!), Cisco, Netgear and so many more are talking about when they mention Web 3.0/Metaverse.

I absolutely love VR but can you imagine actually training in VR how to use a wrench or screw driver 😭😭😭

I think it won’t replace physical training but could act as a great use for safety protocols as they can run through many different situations. I think learning how to use a wrench in VR is hilariously stupid but virtualizing a work environment to get comfortable with it seems fairly practical

You're understanding of the what the metaverse is going to be is not quite right. VR gaming will grow a LOT more, But the metaverse is not just a "Second Life". Its web 3.0 and VR/XR/AR are just portal components into web 3.0 making using the "web" and "technology" actually much easier. People with little tech understanding or inclination will easily be able to access web 3.0 via AR/XR methods augmented with advanced AGI and voice control, intuitive hand gestures and natural interactions with other users via normal human interaction but facilitated with AR glasses/ VR gear or MR gear.

This is what I've been saying. I want AR not VR. AR keeps people in the real world, and it's enhanced by cgi. In video games or any purely virtual world, all the parameters of the world are coded which means they can be modded. You can code in teleportation, one-shot weapons or have unlimited cosmetic manipulation. And while being in God mode can be fun for a time, it ultimately leads to boredom. AR forces people to use their limited real-world energy and limited ability to travel in real space to accomplish virtual tasks in real time. This naturally leads to real-world consequences. You can't just quick save before making a risky move, time is really ticking. I think the solution to the loneliness and isolation of our current society is not to abolish social technology, but to get through to the better applications of it. And that means AR, imo. We'll get off of looking at flat screens all day and get back into the real world. And we'll WANT to be there.

Totally agree! I find it sad that the people most optimistic about the metaverse and living entirely online are likely unhappy with their current lives. VR & AR can really make our lives better and more efficient but the goal shouldn’t be to replace our lives with it.

Clips of VR chat are used in the video. For the sake of simplicity it was lumped together with the metaverse. VR-chat right now is definitely a more functional counterpart than Facebook’s metaverse. At the moment they don’t really fill a long term role, they are the new chat roulette/Omegle. Most stranger encounters are fun, but not long lasting. That’s the real challenge.
