I never noticed how the blonde lady in the pink shirt; top left corner (standing next to the musician) literally floats away like some kind of undersea creature [2:04] 🤣 I guess it was intended to be a backward, scooting away on the ground--similar to what the guy in the blue shirt is doing on the sidewalk? THE DETAILS, man...This is why this restoration was needed! Interesting stuff.

Thank God YOU got hold of it, and it didn't end up in a car boot sale or tossed away. I can't believe they ditched all of the original film for the episodes. All those 80's cartoons on glorious expensive film - and now we have just VHS transfers of virtually all of them. Crazy. You did incredible work. You brought a masterpiece back to life and preserved it forevermore.

@Stefano Pavone true, but cel animation takes a lot longer than what the BBC make. A real Ghostbusters episode takes about nine months to make, while a BBC show took a week or less. Plus, BBC tended to shoot on videotape (in fact, the BBC have always been too stingy to shoot on film.) I agree that no such works should ever be lost though. To think of the countless awful KZbin videos that will last forever, while some great works of yesteryear are gone for good. Such a shame >

@@ryodash Well, you have to look at it from the perspective at the time. The promo basically had one job, and that was to sell the show to the network and the syndicated episodes to independent stations. There was barely any home video market for television cartoons. There were only VHS tapes that had two or three episodes at most, and most shows didn't even get that. Once it did the job and the show was sold, there was no reason for anyone to keep it around or try to preserve it.

@@pizzarat3275 I'll bet the guy who directed it, and all the animators who slaved over it, would be very happy to know that their work was saved. I reckon this must have been animated by TMS (Tokyo Movie Shinsha) and they took great care and pride in their work. Just look at their Little Nemo short as a comparison kzbin.info/www/bejne/h3q2Y32ejNGclaM

One of the most interesting aspects of The Real Ghostbusters has always been the three-minute promo used to sell the series to ABC in 1986. The promo was unique in that it showed a series still very much in development with numerous design and character alterations forthcoming, giving the viewer an idea of how the series would work, whilst later influencing the introduction sequence to the actual series. I first encountered the promo years ago. In the UK a brief craze involved handheld reel players with a variety of thirty-second silent film reels of various animated series. Oddly a few of these reels featured The Real Ghostbusters promo. Those of us who watched this footage were left rather confused. Why did the Ghostbusters sport their movie costumes? Why was Slimer a bad guy? And why did Peter Venkman look different? As brief as the footage was, many elements did not ring true, and the madcap style of action (Ecto-1, driven by Slimer, riding up a bridge's support wires) seemed rather over-the-top when compared to a typical episode of The Real Ghostbusters. Years went by and I forgot about the promo until the late nineties when I saw images on Paul Rudoff's Spook Central website. I recognized certain images from the aforementioned film reels, but there were other scenes that I had never seen before. It soon became apparent that all of this footage was taken from an animated promo used to sell the series. In June of this year I had the pleasure of meeting Kevin Altieri who, after all these years, still had the promo in pristine condition on the very video tape he had originally transferred it to. I was thankful that someone had held onto the promo, but Kevin had done so with good reason; not only did he storyboard the promo alongside Eddie Fitzgerald, but he also directed it! Back in late 1985 Richard Raynis informed Kevin that DiC were going to pitch a show based on the movie Ghostbusters to the ABC network. Being a fan of the movie Kevin leapt at the chance to work on it. Due to the incredibly quick turnaround there was no planned structure to the promo; Kevin and Eddie literally drew scene after scene as the ideas came to them. Eddie storyboarded the Ghost walking down the street as a direct homage to John Travolta in Saturday Night Fever, while Kevin illustrated the heroes in many action-packed scrapes. The pair had no models to work with and based all of their designs on the movie, which is why in the storyboards the characters look like their movie counterparts, Winston even sporting a mustache! Even though animation models were created for the animation team by Gabi Payn, these would later be changed when work commenced on the actual series. These early designs used in the promo closely follow the movie, with the Ghostbusters all wearing the same colored uniform, and their equipment looking a lot more cumbersome, and technical. Aside from Slimer playing up his movie role of "villain" in the promo, as well as Egon's hairstyle illustrated slightly tamer than it would be in the series, one of the most important character changes was that of Peter Venkman. Early on in the production of the promo DiC had been told not to have the animated Ghostbusters resemble the actors from the film. However the Peter Venkman character that appears in the promo still bore some resemblance to actor Bill Murray, and when the time came to work on the series Peter's face and hairstyle were redesigned to look more angular and less round. he character designs by Jim McDermott were dramatically different, with color-coded jumpsuits for each character. When he auditioned for the voice of Egon Spengler, Maurice LaMarche noted that while he was asked not to impersonate Harold Ramis, he did so anyway and eventually got the part. LaMarche also noted that Bill Murray had remarked off-handedly to producers that Lorenzo Music's voice of Peter Venkman sounded more like Garfield (who was also voiced by Music at the time). Bill Murray went on to voice Garfield in Garfield: The Movie and its sequel after Music died. A different explanation for the change of actor for Peter Venkman came from Dave Coulier, who took over the role of Venkman from Music, who explained that Joe Medjuck, a producer on both the original 1984 film and the animated series, wanted the character to sound more like Bill Murray. Ernie Hudson was the only actor from the films who auditioned to play his character in the series; however, the role was given to Arsenio Hall and later Buster Jones. It is worth mentioning that the animation throughout the promo is of an incredibly high standard, and while it is clear that there were numerous Japanese animation teams working on it, they all appeared to be producing their best work. To ask the question whether or not the promo served its purpose would be redundant. Not only did DiC manage to successfully sell the show to ABC, but it also became one of the longest running eighties cartoons with a staggering six years of production, including sixty-five syndicated episodes. For an animated short that ran for three minutes and forty-nine seconds this was an impressive feat! The opening scene shows individuals reacting to something off-screen. When an entire crowd scatters we see for the first time the ghost strutting down the street. The ghost turns sharply and is imprisoned within the no-ghost logo. Next we see the firehouse, with Ray, Winston, Egon and Peter awoken by the alarm. The guys waste no time in suiting up and hurriedly slide down the fire pole. The firehouse doors open, and Ecto-1 screeches towards the camera with Ray on the roof. As the logo fills the screen Ecto-1 swerves away from the camera and speeds past traffic. The next three shots perfectly sum up the Ghostbusters with Ray eagerly ready for action, Winston determinedly on the job, Egon calculating, and Peter in the backseat reading a comic. The camera follows Ecto-1 before zooming underneath the car and revealing their target; a Stay Puft truck spilling marshmallows, with a certain green ghost as the culprit. As the guys begin to catch the Stay Puft truck, Ray, still atop the roof, fires his Proton Gun, the force of which throws him backwards. The green ghost flies out of shot, just as the beam strikes the truck, causing it to explode, liquefying the marshmallows. As the marshmallow sludge covers the windshield Peter attempts to catch Ray, but the pair fall out of the car. A confused Egon looks at Winston, last seen at the wheel of Ecto-1. Both turn in horror as they see the green ghost now in control, driving rather erratically towards a bridge. Within seconds Ecto-1 is being driven up the side of the bridge at increasing speed. When it reaches the summit the vehicle is catapulted into the air towards the city. Meanwhile a woman bothered by a horde of ghosts calls the Ghostbusters, who subsequently come crashing through her window. Egon and Winston are thrown from the car as the menacing ghosts loom over them. Ray and Peter recovering from their fall from Ecto-1 spot a small demon pestering a man in a phone box. The pair race after the demon, but are stopped in their tracks by a large blue demon that leaps out of a manhole cover. Seconds later a large pink demon falls from the sky and lands on the ground with great impact. The floor beneath Ray and Peter collapses and the pair fall into the darkness below. They land on a subway track unhurt, but immediately notice an oncoming train. With seconds to spare a large hand grabs them, saving them from the speeding train. The Stay Puft Marshmallow Man looks at Ray and Peter, but a passing plane picks them up. The plane piloted by a ghost flies wildly over the city before leaving the guys hanging onto a drainpipe, which begins to tilt. Meanwhile Egon and Winston are running for their lives pursued by the group of ghosts, and exit the building with great haste. Ray and Peter, still holding on to the drainpipe fall on top of Egon and Winston. Reunited the guys turn to see the large group of ghosts led by the green ghost and the Stay Puft Marshmallow Man. A determined Peter calls the guys into action, Egon throwing down a trap in front of the ghosts. The guys grab their Proton Guns and activate them, prompting the green ghost to escape just as the Ghostbusters fire. As Mr. Stay Puft watches Slimer fly past he reacts to the beams now surrounding him with great fury. Just as it appears that the green ghost is going to escape a beam grabs him and pulls him back. The trap sucks up all of the ghosts in, including the green ghost and Mr. Stay Puft, whose hat falls onto the floor. The green ghost's hand emerges from the trap and snatches the hotdog he had dropped, as Peter raises the trap and the Ghostbusters celebrate their victory. Since there is no dialogue and the Ghostbusters theme song plays throughout the pilot, the pilot is practically an animated music video of the song.

A short pilot episode was produced, but never aired in full. The full four-minute promo was released on Time Life's DVD set in 2008. Scenes of the pilot can be seen in TV promos that aired prior to the beginning of the series. Among differences seen in the promo pilot, the Ghostbusters wore beige jumpsuits as in the film and the character design for Peter Venkman bore more of a resemblance to actor Bill Murray. The character designs by Jim McDermott were dramatically different, with color-coded jumpsuits for each character. One of the most interesting aspects of The Real Ghostbusters has always been the three-minute and forty-nine seconds pilot used to sell the series to ABC. Back in late 1985 Richard Raynis informed Kevin Altieri that DiC were going to pitch a show based on the movie Ghostbusters to the ABC network. Being a fan of the movie Kevin leapt at the chance to work on it. Due to the incredibly quick turnaround there was no planned structure to the pilot; Kevin and Eddie Fitzgerald literally drew scene after scene as the ideas came to them. The pair had no models to work with and based all of their designs on the movie, which is why in the storyboards the characters look like their movie counterparts, with Winston even sporting a mustache! In fact, they made Egon look like the Chief from "Where On Earth is Carmen Sandiego?" Besides storyboarding the pilot with Eddie Fitzgerald, Kevin Altieri also directed it. It was completed on December 16, 1985, and not only did DiC manage to successfully sell the show to ABC, but it also became one of the longest running eighties cartoons with a staggering six years of production, including sixty-five syndicated episodes. The reason the full pilot even exists on The Real Ghostbusters: Complete Collection DVD box set from TimeLifeis because, after all these years, Kevin still had it in pristine condition on the very video tape he had originally transferred it to. James Eatock, who worked on the DVD set, took photos of the videocassette itself, along with the video tag that preceeded the pilot on the tape, which was left off of the DVD. Footage from the pilot was used in: an ABC promo to announce the premiere of the series in the Fall of 1986 (amonst the many times it aired was on August 17, 1986 during the The Disney Sunday Movie), a Blockbuster Video promo to announce the original Magic Window home video VHS release of the series in 1987, a Syndication promo to announce the premiere of the series in syndication in the Fall of 1987, and in the opening credits of "The Halloween Door" primetime special in 1989. The first 54 seconds of the pilot was used in its entirety in the Syndication promo and in the Blockbuster Video promo, but with different narration. Once the Ghostbusters start sliding down the firepole in silhouette, that's when the Blockbuster Video promo cuts to other footage, while the Syndication promo continues the shot up to the point where the Ecto-1 comes racing out of the firehouse, at which point it stills on the logo on the side of the car. Here's a brief history of the Restored Version: The 16mm film reel was purchased by Robert Barbieri sight unseen from a lot of stuff found by another collector. It said "Ghostbusters" on the can, but he had no idea what exactly would be on the reel. He took it to be digitized and, lo and behold, it was the silent Master film copy that was shipped to DiC from the Japan animation studio that was contracted to do the animation for the pilot. Robert spent four months using Photoshop to clean up over 5,500 frames, and one month was spent color correcting each scene individually. The next step was to get sound for it. Luckily, the original director, Kevin Altieri, snuck a copy onto a personal VHS back in the day as a memento of his work. When he was interviewed for the TimeLife DVD set in 2008, he dug it up for the bonus features. When that VHS tape was digitized for inclusion in the set, James Eatock kept a copy of the raw digital transfer. He took the audio from that raw transfer, sent it to his friend and collaborator Dusan Mitrovic for remastering to get the best possible sound quality out of it, then sent it to Robert to sync with the restored film transfer. Granted, Robert could have simply ripped the pilot from the Time Life bonus disc to get the audio track, but he wanted to get the best quality possible - which meant going back to the original source. Been waiting on this since the "found reel" news hit the web. What's even more fascinating, Rob's efforts will likely surpass what the network execs originally saw in the 1985 pitch meeting. I mean, we're talking videotape here & (Rob says it himself, "The Beta tapes are made to look good on a 13" tube TV...") Just thinking of what was available at the time; many of the artists details were probably fuzzy & of typical 1985 analog-fare. I've always loved the background art in this series; the sunset/dusk-colored skies against the skyscrapers & I'm happy that I'll finally get to see that "pop" along with all the other goodies I love about the RGB. Thanks for all your hard work!

Hi Robert, is their anway i could get the unrestored raw footage from the reel? I restore cartoons for fun and I'd love to test out some filters on the raw footage. Adobe Premiere Pro is great for color correction and the Photoshop approach is a extremely dedicated way to fix all the dirt. Personally i would have used a completely different approach and try and leave in some more grain. So if there is way to get a copy please let me know i'd love try use my own filters on this.

Well by no means would i call myself a professional ore anything. Like yourself i don't use any professional studio gear either. More ore less i only use Adobe + free software maybe even a bit of outdated stuff but it works. For example for denoising and dirt removal i would use Avisynth (it's free). It does have a bit of a learning curve to it sins your writing everything down in text. But it's really powerful thanks to the wide range of opensource scripts and users contribution made through the years. The software in my opinion is one of the best when working on old footage taken from reels ore VHS tapes. Although nowadays it might be smarter to start learning VapourSynth sins it aims to be the modern rewrite of it. I might eventually switch to that for restorations but for now i stick with Avisynth it's what i know and what i like. The frame by frame photoshop dirt removal i wouldn't call that a bad approach either sins it's a lot more accurate of course than simply using a filter. However exporting the frames to jpg instead of raw might have created more artifacts in the final video. As for denoising you can go all out but working on old footage and especially Animated stuff. I personally think it looks better to leave in a bit more grain sins animated footage has repeating frames. It tricks the eyes and makes you believe the footage is still showing new frames. A other thing you might have noticed is the lineart gets effected the more denoising you use. Using Avisynth it's possible to use a auto generated mask to keep these lines untouched while denoising. That something i always try todo when denosing and i'd love to try it out on the raw Ghostbuster reel capture if possible. If you want to give me a opportunity to try it out let me know and i'll send you my email.

Several residents of New York see ghosts and scream. The ghost in the no-ghost logo walks around and then freezes in a pose similar to the one in the logo and he is finished when a prohibited symbol appears over him. A siren wails and wakes up the Ghostbusters, who then get on their uniforms and Proton Packs to get ready to bust some ghosts. The Ghostbusters chase after Slimer in the Ecto-1, but the green ghost splatters Stay Puft Marshmallows all over the windshield. As soon as the marshmallow goo is wiped off, Peter and Ray fall out of the Ecto-1 and Egon and Winston are crammed into one seat with Slimer driving the Ecto-1 and grinning evilly. The Ecto-1 is driven through a hotel crawling with ghosts. Slimer and the ghosts scare Egon and Winston and chase them out of the hotel. Peter and Ray see a man in a telephone booth being bothered by a tiny ghost. They decide to give chase, but run into a big blue monster emerging from the sewers. A bigger pink monster falls from the sky and slams the ground. The two fall in front of an incoming subway train and are "rescued" by the Stay Puft Marshmallow Man before they end up being snatched away from Mr. Stay Puft by a skeleton piloting an airplane. Eventually, the four Ghostbusters are brought back together and they decide to bust all the ghosts. Most of the ghosts get in the Trap easily, but Stay Puft tries to resist and Slimer narrowly escapes. A Proton Stream grabs Slimer into the trap and after some struggling, the Ghostbusters finally get Stay Puft into the trap and thereby capture all the ghosts. Differences from the Series The pilot is something of the crossroads between the first film and the Real Ghostbusters Series in many ways. Slimer and Stay Puft Marshmallow Man were bad guys in the pilot and the Ghostbusters all wore the tan uniforms like in the first film. Peter looks more like Bill Murray than the later series had. Also, the animation was more exaggerated than the later series. The equipment also was different and was sort of its own design. The sleeping quarters and even the alarm bell look more akin to the film than the animated series as well.

I always hear people say the pilot never aired but that's not true. As a child I remember waking up earlier than usual one morning, flipping on the tv, and seeing the Ghostbusters in all tan uniforms driving the ecto-1 up a bridge. This was while the series was already airing so Ghostbusters was already very popular. I told all my friends what I had seen but none of them believed me. It wasn't until 2008 when it surfaced again that I was able to show everyone that I wasn't crazy. So at least one tv studio aired it in the Washington d.c. area.

I loved this show. Born in '81, myself. I had every episode recorded on VHS, until a basement flood took them (and many other pirate VHS tapes) away from me. The only thing that ever bugged me... why did they choose to give egon BLONDE HAIR? Anyway... are you going to release this?

From what I heard. This was shown to also the 4 actors who liked it but Bill Murray felt Peter's appearance had to be changed and they agreed. In the pilot, Peter still looked too much like Bill Murray and in the animated series, they're appearances are supposed to reflect on their characters not the actors who played them in the movie. Dan Akyroyd and Harold Ramis also helped with that.

If I owned the rights to the Real Ghostbusters, I would have the entire series remade in HD for a streaming service (or CGI). I guarantee fans would eat it up, especially if they concluded it with a full length animated movie. But as we know, Hollywood lacks common sense.

bro i aint tryna be a hater i dont even know you but the scan looks horrendous and the post-processing made it 1000x uglier. the chromatic aberration, the haloing, the lack of textures from the unsophisticated degraining method...bro....if you (if youre the one who did this restoration) still has the film print, I ***HIGHLY*** recommend you consider not letting the film go to waste and getting its full potential out of it. even 8mm stuff can look better than this

Besides storyboarding the pilot with Eddie Fitzgerald, Kevin Altieri also directed it.
