I commented about a year ago saying how badly I would like to one day see the place, and stand where my father stood so many years ago. I was given that opportunity, and spent the night of May 4 till the morning of May 5 up on Hacksaw Ridge, in contemplation of my father's actions 74 years ago on that date. It was an indescribably personal experience, and I came away with a new appreciation for my father.

Definitely not the massive sheer cliff with acres of land on top that they showed in the movie but still amazing to think of what happened there not that long ago. Crazy to think of how drastically Japan has changed in 73 years.

It is insane to me what happened here only 73 years ago and to see it now and see how amazing Japan really is incredible.
@leescuderi83316 жыл бұрын
Yeah but to me that's 10xs worse. In the movie they had some ground between each other before the battle happened. Imagine the battle here...the second you get up the cliff you are on top of each other. Like fighting in someone's backyard. It must have just been a meat grinder on top of that ridge.
@furstenfeldbruck5 жыл бұрын
The cliff actually is very steep, but it's just covered by all those trees so its hard to see. Before the battle was fought, the American Navy cleared away all of the trees with their bombs leaving scorched Earth everywhere

Chimpy the movie, and a lot of the pictures make the top flat area look so massive like the side of a mountain or something. I guess I didn’t expect it to be the size of a park where I could walk the top in a fairly short time span.
@niccolemanz6 жыл бұрын
Recently saw the film and I must say the real ridge is very intimidating. The thought of standing at the base staring up, it must’ve looked incredibly daunting. The initial hike then into the climb that increases in slope as you go, to a sheer final stretch. These men, on both sides, were a different level of courageous.

I lived on the very end of Hacksaw ridge over looking Hwy 1 for two years in 1962. I knew about the history but never explored the ridgeline. It was heavy folliage and had not be cleared completely of ordinance. We had occasional wild fires and you could hear the ordinance going off. None of the tombs to the West were there and there were no memorials. Our house was right next to the power tower at the end of the escarpment. Great movie and a great story.

Awesome video. The music set the tone perfectly. Great drone footage, by the way and the food looks great. I was a Marine stationed in Okinawa at Camp Courtney back in 1993. Unfortunately, all I did was party, chase girls and hit the clubs over by Gate 2 Street by Kadena Air Base (normal stuff for a young single Marine, you know). I’m 49 now and I wish I would’ve been more interested and more involved with World War II history then as I am now.

Thanks Brother. Freaking awesome drone footage ! Haven't been up there in 40 years. They (the Okinawans) have sure fixed it up nice. At 3:24 in the video, the top of the sign, the title, reads in Katakana "Ha-ku-saa Ri-gi-u" and the paragraph below is a mix of katakana, hiragana, and kanji and say pretty much the same thing as the English paragraph under it, but with a little bit more colorful language. I'd like to point out that the cemetery had mostly "tombs" not graves. Okinawans typically used tombs multiple generations would be interred in them after cremation. I lived in Okinawa during the early 80's and made many good friends who were in their 60's, 70's and 80's. They actually experienced the "Battle of Okinawa". Oh, the stories the told ! The Japanese used the as cannon fodder and human-shields. The Okinawans were pissed back in 1972 when the US gave the islands back to Japan. They said the 27 years after the war was one of the best of times because the US invested in jobs and redevelopment. As soon as Japan took over they taxed the hell out of the Okinawans and their pay scale got cut by a third. Good times 😬

Seeing all the housing that’s grown up around the battle site, reminds me of where I grew up. I grew up in Fairfax county Va, very near Chantilly. While not part of the 1st or 2nd battlefield of Bull Run battlefield park, I do know there was fighting in the immediate area of my house. The fighting in 1862 would have been worse if a massive thunderstorm had not risen up to put a stop to the fighting.

I was in the US Navy stationed at Camp Hansen - I was a Hospital Corpsman but I used to perform (I played guitar) at the Snack Cave in Kinville. The owner of the bar was Masanori Shimabuku but everyone knew him as Eddie. He was a very nice guy. I participated one night on base at the USO in the talent contest and the Okinawa Hilton hotel wanted me to play there. I declined because they thought that it would be great if I played for a meal. It is several hours back and forth from Camp Hansen down to the Naha area so I said no. I was playing for my friends, a distraction from being away from home for all of us. On the way back to the base we would stop at Mama's Kitchen and have Chicken Yakisoba with Eggs. Yum! Lots of good times. You can see some video's of me performing at the Del Mar Fair in San Diego, just search for Carl Robinson Del Mar.

The ridge area is narrower than I thought. Had to have been extreme tense fighting there in that small area. The Japanese in one sense were most fanatical here because it was their homeland itself, not some island far into the Pacific. This was Japan. American military leaders knew from this experience that fighting on the Japanese main islands would be even worse than Okinawa.
